So, it's been a while since I've done a monthly list, but I figured I'd do a year end list.

It's still back to doing it by hand, so no Weight, year, price, # of ratings or even HM based on Ranking.

For a list of some of the games that have become ineligible (and eligible again) over the past couple years; http://www.boardgamegeek.com/geeklist/26429

The metalist for this series can be found; http://www.boardgamegeek.com/geeklist/21290 as always you can subscribe to that list to get notifications of any future lists in the series.

To make this list a bit more interesting, I called together a special Ad Hoc committee. Well, they don't really know it, but I figured I'd look at some of my geekbuddies and the good and bad they have to say. So who are these VIPs? 1000rpm, Bagherra, Blott, boltongeordie, callidusx3, czrdup, DKahnt, doubtofbuddha, EgorjLileli, gordon1018, Grimwold, Guantanamo, Isamoor, JasonRMax, JohnnyDollar, JohnRayJr, KrisVerbeeck, KSensei, laiernie, Liumas, manowarplayer, Nap16, Neil Thomson, Orange Meeple, Osiris Ra, pete belli, Quixote171, Randy Cox, rmartinc, Rygel, Sagrilarus, shebby, SteveK2, Stormparkiet, stormseeker75, Teriyaki Donuts, thoia, Twinge, verandi, Zalasta. How did I pick them? Well completely unscientific that's for sure.

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

One thing I dislike about some people's monthly lists, is after a while they stop explaining their reasoning behind them. So, if you've read mine before (or you don't care) you can skip on to the list now. But, here's the full why:

IMHO, some games are good because others say they are good. And so get more play; "all these people are playing this game, let's play it". While other good games sit around with little notice because they aren't being talked about. So, a last year I decided to start looking at those games that are getting played a lot that AREN'T part of the top 200. You may ask why top 200 and not 100? Or for that matter 300? 'Because'.

IMO, if a lot of different people are playing a game, it must have some value to someone somewhere. That's not to say that the Top 200 AREN'T good games or there aren't games out there that are good that aren't getting any play. I'm just trying to show some games out there that different people are playing 'because they are fun' and not just because they have the best press. Over the past couple months, I've gotten a couple comments about 'well these are on BSW (or what not)'. To that I have to say "ah but you have heard of [them].." Again, I'm not saying there aren't MORE good games out there.

I've also had a suggestion about adding weight to longer games. A complaint is that these are short (filler) games because people are more likely to play shorter games. Well, isn't that the point? Showing some games that people in your group might be willing to play. Plus, I'm doing it on number of users playing it, not number of times. IMHO The length of a game does not measure enjoyment. For my gaming tastes I get more enjoyment playing 3-6 different games in the same time the other table is playing one game of TI3.

Obviously, expansions skew this. It's just going by how they were logged. So, if someone logged Niagara while others logged the game under spirits, it's just got Niagara.

So, here's some 'good' press for games that may not be showing up on 'top lists'.

I'm allowing additions, but let's keep it to those games that are good (to your group), get played a lot on BGG (you decide), but aren't ranked in the Top 200.

My HM are games that look interesting that just stay under these 10 or that I've played recently and are just outside the top 10. I've also added a Top500 HM and Top1000 HM. The most played (by different users, not number of times) that is ranked higher then 500 and 1000 and not on this list already.

I've added a few more items recently. While I don't think that time equates to good, I've added a weight factor based on the est. time for one game. It still doesn't use total play time. I don't want some games like Diamant that can be played 10 times in a sitting to have anyone more weight then one game.

I've also added based on actual game weight. Games greater then 2, 3 and 4 lists. But these and the time weighted lists will be listed as one item. With the 'most' interesting one representing them.

I must say each month I've gone ahead and picked up a few games off of this list and for the most part have been VERY pleased. Most people in the group are buying the top games and I've been adding to the game library by adding these gems. The lone exception really was Poison. I some how thought there would be more to that game then counting to 13.

At NUMBER #1!!!!!!!!!

Rolling, Rolling, Rolling, keep those dice rolling.

Fun dice game.

A bit worried that repeated play will find me and others finding what works for them and just sticking to it.

isamor wrote:
Rated: 10 - Mar09: This one really does accomplish what it sets out to do. It's a short game with plenty of interesting decisions. Some of them even long term (well, 20 minutes long term).

There are different paths to try. You can rush the monuments. You can build waaay up to 6-7 cities. You can sort of go development crazy.

This really is the fun thematic dice game I've been looking for. For now, it's better than Can't Stop and Monopoly Express both.

As far as game length goes, I'm not yet crazy about the 5 development ending. I know other people have played around with upping that limit. I think I'd consider messing with just a flat turn limit. It would take away some of the uncertainty about when the game will end, but I figure you'll still be struggling to complete exactly as much as you can anywho.

July09: Late Bronze Age Update

This game goes all the way to almost 10. With 2 players, it probably is a 10. With more players, I just don't think the trading does enough to keep it from being boring not on your turn.

Really though, the expansion is awesome. It adds more depth, more strategic paths and just that little bit more game time. You really feel like you can make a plan and ride it all the way to the finish line.

johnrayjr wrote:
Rated: 7 - I'm baffled by the existence of the game.

Roll Through the Ages is preposterous on its face. It's a "civ game" in which you collect resources, grow your population, develop innovations such as agriculture and masonry, and complete ambitious "wonders" like the Pyramids. Games like this are usually thought of as "streamlined" if they clock in at 4 hours or less. RTtA takes 20 minutes. Yeah, laugh it off. Your turn also consists primarily on rolling a set of dice up to three times (guffaw). The thing is, the game packs a reasonable amount of strategy as each player races to complete the developments and the wonders. And race is the right word: what you've got here is another quirky income-to-VPs gear shifter. The goals are tired but the mechanics are fresh, and the throwback quality of the pegboard and scorecards didn't hurt. Don't pass this one up.

doubtofbuddha wrote:
Rated: 3 - Whomever rolls the most workers early wins. The second game I did not roll any workers for the first 2/3 of the game. I came in last. The guy who rolled the most early workers came in first. The guy who rolled the second most early workers came in second. The guy who rolled the third most came in second.

Extremely unlikely I will play it again.

I played this once and didn't have a good game. But, I left it on my wishlist and was recently given a copy. I do need to give it another try.

Coming in 2nd is the game about drowning burning gnomes.

Nap16 wrote:
Rated: 8 - Nice coop game, dripping with theme. The Gnomes are a stretch (and unnecessary), but still a good game. Game Owned: #1115.

blott wrote:
Rated: 6 - After my first solo play this seems like a decent cooperative game. I can see it being a bit too long and frustrating with too many players, but with 3 or 4 it seems enjoyable. Though the game feels a bit too small it seems to fit for the depth of the gameplay. Still there are those exciting moments where you roll the die and hope for a miracle and then manage it, which makes for a lot of entertainment.

Thanks again to my 2008 Secret Santa! Don't worry that I no longer own it, it went towards a trade that got me my 1 and only grail game. You helped with that, so I'm a happy camper.

thoia wrote:
Rated: 6 - First off I'm going to say that I have no problem at all with the randomness in this game. I am after all a big Faidutti fan so you know going into one of his games that randomness, wackiness and frivolity are all par for the course.

So the game is just that. VERY random. That I'll take. Incorporating the time track element from Thebes is awesome in a co-op game bravo there.

I've played the game twice in one evening. First game lost miserably. Second game won without much trouble. I do attest the 2nd game kind of seems like a fluke and we got lucky with events. That's random for you and again...I don't care.My main criticism here is I got bored doing the exact same things over and over. Yes that's what you do in Pandemic too but something there feels...more fun. Maybe it's in those special cards you pull and Red November doesn't have that.

I plan on putting more thoughts down later but that'll come out in a review so look for that...maybe.

Oh, and I had to get rid of the insert in order to close the box nicely. That bit of printing didn't need to be done.

zalasta wrote:
Rated: 6 - Beautifully produced. The gameplay for Wasabi! turns out to be quite harsh, albeit unintentionally. Since everyone utilizes the same ingredients on the board with hidden information, you really have no idea what people need to complete their own recipes. As a result the game becomes highly chaotic as it progresses and there is no way to plan your moves ahead of time. Easy to teach and plays fairly quickly. It's a nice light filler but probably not something I'd want to get out very often.

verandi wrote:
Rated: 6 - The spectacular components enhance the theme, and along with the easy to absorb rules make Wasabi a great gateway game. It is particularly exciting to me because I love games with a spatial element. With hidden objectives, it seems interaction is more incidental than meaningful, but I'm not sure this is entirely true- even if you don't know exactly what the other players are going for you can have an idea of what spaces to disrupt. Also knowing that every recipe requires Rice or Maki creates interesting offensive tactics. The game will ultimately sink or swim depending on how well it fares in this regard.

Rated: 7 - Fun! Nice decisions, and Quick. A kids game feel, but for adults (I think). Kids love this too, especially the fluffy panda on the cover.

However, I am downgrading my rating here - because it is just too annoying to keep track of the constantly changing rule set. Seems to me that you shouldn't be changing the rules to a game AFTER it has won a prestigious award. We've locked our ruleset in *now*.

I haven't downgraded this further, but the constant release of expansions, new tiles, and convention tile giveaways has taken more of the sheen off of this game. It's too difficult to keep track of now and the game itself just seems all over the place - so much effort just to figure out which sets to play.

blott wrote:
Rated: 6 - A good light game. It plays nice and quick. It seems to serve as an excellent gateway game, and the women in my family really seem to have latched onto it. It's quickly becoming my most-requested game. The one drawback is that each game can feel shockingly similar to the last game you played. The decisions you make each time feel like routine after you've played a few games. Still it's fun if you keep it to occasional gameplay.

There also seems to be some kind of point ceiling in the game that you can't break. So if you reach a certain number of points it seems you're just playing a game trying not to hurt yourself. And it almost seems to discourage hurting your opponents because there isn't a good way of dealing with animals you don't want, so if you take something your opponent wants you'll just be hurting yourself.

An extremely well-designed short game.

I do wish that as a filler this was designed to hold more people. 4 players just makes it so that it doesn't hit the table often (although I have played it with 5, but...).

Rated:8 - This game of simultaneous decision-making is great. I like trying to read my opponents' minds and guessing their plans. It gets more random with more players, but that just makes it more enjoyable for me. It's always interesting trying to predict when another player will play lower than you so that they can take the points and allow you to get away with taking none. Some players will really not enjoy the randomness of the game and the fact that predicting what will happen is very hard, but this is not some deep game, it's a light filler. For a little bit more strategy, there is a variant where you use fewer cards. I haven't tried this yet, but it could be quite enjoyable.

Zalasta wrote:
Rated: 7.5 - Low strategy due to how random the cards can come out. However, I do enjoy the chaotic nature of the game. Fun with a good crowd of people.

Update: I play this a lot on BSW, it seems that 8 player is the sweet spot, and I prefer the professional (or profi) variant. Require a lot more strategic selection of cards, and you don't end up with a lot of "dead" rows (i.e. ones that you cannot add any more cards to them).

Boltongeordie wrote:

As for the variants. I like the superpowers, but some are more fun than others. It really sucks having an uncool superpower and then have someone else pick the grenade or something else fun.

The police variant is super cool. I had been reluctant to try it, as it seemed complicated, but now that I have it changes the whole game. Now you have someone to try and gun down. At least for me it was really fun and I will prefer to play with it from now on.

Rated: 7 - The tug of war that you feel in this game is quite nice, but it's often easy to pick out who are the saboteurs based on their actions. It also doesn't evenly reward the successful miners which seems unfair. I'm not sure if we will play this game on a regular basis, but for a once-in-a-while game it's a real blast. Unfortunately, Rikki hates it and has declared that she will never play again, which doesn't bode well for the future of the game.

There seems to be a distinct difference in the feel of this game depending on the number of players. With more players the saboteurs can remain hidden better. However, if fate makes it so that there are not many saboteurs, they will struggle to slow down the miners. I think my favorite part of the game is that players can help other players, and even flat-out lie. With a good group of liars the fun is definitely amped up in this game.

Great bits. I see why this was an SDJ contender. Anyone who will complain that 'there is nothing new here' should simply avoid this game.

Rated 6 - I picked it up because of the SdJ. With that in mind, it appears to be what it is. A light family game that can easily be taught and played under an hour. I played with two of my children and we had fun with it. There seemed be some choices to make and some race to get things from time to time. I enjoyed the experience over all with my kids and would like to play it with them some more. I may pull it out with gamers when I need a 30-45 game (of course with us that means 90 mins ) I think they will enjoy it, but I don't think it would be something that would get into a rotation.

This is one of those games that you could just as easily learn with solid colors and shapes in place of a theme. There are points for collecting sets, bonus points for collecting the most of a certain fruit, some influence over when bonus tiles are given out, extra points for collecting one set of every size, and some tactics to how many fruit you can collect at any given time and when / how often you can turn in your sets. It's just.... insubstantial. Honestly I'd be more willing to play again with no theme at all to distract me.

Rated: 9 - A really enjoyable puzzle game. If you enjoy Tetris, you will really get a kick out of this game (it's no coincidence that they look the same.) I love how the different boards challenge you. It just amazes me that you get so much variety with nothing but a different starting piece. If you don't like puzzle games or multi-player solitaire, then this will not suit you, but I don't mind either of those things. My wife loves it which is another bonus, and it's easily accessible for non-gamers. I also greatly appreciate the fact that you can play the game solitaire.

Rarely do I get excited about expansions, but this game is just loaded with possibilities and has me itching for more. I foresee FITS being a permanent fixture on our game table for years to come. I have yet to find a single person who doesn't like the game, and enjoy the simple elegance of the game design. People will literally be begging for a particular piece to come up, and yelling at the card shuffler for putting the piece they needed at the bottom of the deck.

(Note: Could easily be played with more players if you simply bought a second copy of the game.)

Zalasta wrote:
Rated: 7 - Even though Knizia has been recycling a lot of old ideas and mechanics in his new releases, I have to say that FITS actually hits a nice spot in the casual gaming category. True it doesn't take much skill to arrange the pieces as they come up nor does it involve a lot of strategy or planning. However, the Take It Easy style of placement with the different goals each round complements well enough with each other to make the game enjoyable.

People who enjoy this game admit that the pleasure they get out of it is to "relax" while they think about or do something else... I guess depends on what you are looking for in a game.

The fun is simply in hearing the answers and seeing what players will pick. If you are overly concerned with winning, though, you will get annoyed with the game. My biggest problem is that you can go through quite a number of cards in each game, so you will frequently see familiar cards that you have played with already. The replayability is a bit low for me.

And this is a pretty darn good game. Not quite as good as Looping Louie but bags of fun none-the-less. Fast, irreverent and with a lot of take that. The sliders have just the right amount of friction so that you can make a controlled slide with a little practise and the board is well designed and well thought out.

Fun for kids and adults alike.

Game lends itself to numerous variations which is a good thing.

The sliders are of good enough quality. The board I don't know. For a dexterity game I think the only way to go is wood or hard plastic instead of carton.

Certainly will play this very light game again but won't be very high on my want to play list.

I count 15 minutes as one play.

Rated: 9 - Fun game. Not so much 'beer and pretzels' as simply the beer, or maybe just the pretzels.

Rules Clarification: There are 11 tokens per player, 1 token per column. Each column never has more than 1 token of each player color. A new token is added to a column only when that column has no existing token of the given color. An existing token in a column is moved up when that column is marked again rather than adding a second token of that color to the column. The above will help people like me who read rules literally as written. Ignore pictures of this game showing the same color represented twice on a given column/number; those pictures are wrong.

Preferred Scoring Variant: (Players/ColumnsToWin) 4/3, 3/4, 2/5

Play the Blocking rules - much more strategy. Sliding rules are also fun, adding more strategy as well and also making for a quicker game.

Try my Short Stop variant for another fun and fast way to play with 2 players (in the files section for this game).

Very simple, but highly enjoyable game. Have the reprint with stopsignboard. You have got to get that version. Probably the best filler. (Haven't played them all)This games is playable by a very wide range of gamers.Allthough people will say that luck is an important factor. I believe strategy to be as important. If there is one game to give to a person I absolutely know nothing about this is it. so would make a perfect secret santa gift)

Logged plays are mostly 3 P games. I have only Logged 2 plays against computer opponents. 300+ games with my uncle and his wife.

After 100+ games I'm rating this down to an 8. (from 8.5)

after 222+ games rating goes to a 7.

300+ games. I have had enough of this game. hence the 6.

I thought of a variant to use in a three player game.
Before the start you write three numbers down. If you take thes e columns you will win too. You need four on top in a three player game.

350+ games
Back to playing to three on top even in a three player game.
four on top gets pretty dull sometimes.
I want to introduce stealing columns.

This is a really fun and original dice game, which gets a lot of play in my lunchtime group, where we are always looking to steal worms off other players... 3 is the absolute best number of players for this, and a game with 3 play in 20 minutes or less... 4 is ok, but more than that it just becomes far too slow.

Fun, though, and we probably always want to play this at least twice, especially when I feel I've screwed it in the early go. Which is always the case. And then I screw it in the 3rd go, which annoys me to the point that I have reduce the rating here by 1.

YMMV.

Rated: 9 - An exceptionally fine blend of skill and luck. You win by pushing it. You have to reach a bit, you have to make good decisions, and you have to have contingencies prepared for when something unexpected happens.

Skill will pay off in this game. It's not just "the overwatch baby" though that's a cute slogan, it's about driving into the enemy and taking control of the situation. This game provides that opportunity, but you have to take it -- it's not handed to you for free.

The game drives emotion. You feel compelled to succeed, for no apparent reason. The theme is this curious blend of combat and monastic tradition which almost generates its own Gregorian background music as you play. Beautifully rendered.

Production quality is literally second to none. I challenge you to name a game with finer components out of the box than this.

Rated: 8 - I really like 1st edition. I disliked how they took the timer out of 2nd edition and a couple other things that I don't remember. I'm glad they put the timer back in. It's kinda nice that they went ahead and ACTUALLY put a timer in, but I kinda miss that the Sgt/ and Capt's added time. But, that's fine. I'm not sure I like the adding the 'CC Overwatch'. But, I can live with that. I don't think I like that you 'go back on overwatch when you clear your jam'. Kinda annoying. BUT, with limited CPs I don't know if it's going to end up mattering enough to go past annoying.

The tiles are great, but I wish they were so much thicker then the others.

The models. Well I guess the are great for people like Dan. But, I got out of 'miniature' gaming for one reason, because I dind't have the time or the talent for the painting. I d think there is two sides of miniature gaming. The gaming and the hobby. The models are great for the hobby side of it. The gaming side of it, the genstealers are a bit annoying. Then you think, hey this isn't a miniature game, this is a board game. I actually prefer to call the 'plastic' bits that come with board games as either plastic bits or plastic board game figures. To me they aren't miniatures. So, really they are 'over produced' in my opinion.

I can see me getting people into it and then switching to 1st edition. Although, I have no problems with the rules set, so I might just use the 1st edition tiles (much more) and the figures (much easier to use).

Because the 'human' player is under a time limit, I find it interesting and fun the throw in 'miscommunication' into the mix. So, I like to play Missions where there are two squads and each squad is run by each person. Then when one person draws and looks at those Command Points the timer starts and now one person has to take care of his squad while keeping track of the CPs and communicating with the other guy whom needs to ask for CPs when they need them and hope the other player is keeping them in mind. It's a wonderful addition to the stress.

The one flaw is the way the rules are written, they greatly confuse the use of the Dragon Tile. Check the Rules section here on BGG for some clarification.

Aside from that, it's an excellent puzzly type of game that has become an instant classic in our household. A mix of strategic tile-placement and path-finding make this a fun game for all ages. And just one game is rarely enough, most players want to try again almost immediately.

At the beginning of the turn, players simultaneously reveal whether they are going deeper into the temple or heading back to camp with their treasure. As the game goes on, players who have not returned to camp yet face greater odds of losing all of their treasure from the current round. So, Incan Gold is about pressing your luck and knowing when to quit. Sometimes, you'll score big for leaving at the right time. Sometimes, you'll score big for pushing onward after everyone else bails out. Nice artwork. Not as good as For Sale, No Thanks!, Liar's Dice, or Master of Rules, but passable. Better than Coloretto, at least.

Rated: 8 - After three 4-player games, I'm not sure about this one, and it's not just because I lost so badly in the 3rd game. Inevitably, it'll be compared to Lost Cities, and the initial comparison isn't that good. Taking note of 3 players' played cards is much harder than taking note of one player's cards, so discards are less well considered. The option of playing cards ascending or descending also throws this somewhat (though I guess choosing to start colours already started by other players in reverse order might be a good idea). The other thing that niggles is that card values don't matter (theres no Lost Cities style scoring). All that matters is the quantity of cards in a colour.

Despite all those reservations, I find myself enjoying Keltis more & more and thinking of Lost Cities less & less.

Zalasta wrote:
Rated: 7 - An admirable attempt to translate the Lost Cities gameplay into a board game for four. The tension between holding on to, laying down or discarding a card is still there. However, even though the number of opponents have increased, your immediate concern is still only the person going after you. With the exception of the clover leaf, I've found that the other path tiles to be completely superfluous and unnecessary. Those points may matter in a close game, but if you get the right cards and play them well, they are practically meaningless. Definitely a decent filler and a family-friendly title in terms of its accessibility. Otherwise, it is nothing special. For people that want to try Lost Cities but don't care for 2-player games, I'd recommend giving Keltis a go.

verandi wrote:
Rated: 5 - I think this is as good as Lost Cities could have been in multi-player form. Nonetheless, there is just something about the zero-sum aspect of play in Lost Cities that here has been diluted and obfuscated. With more players there seems to be a greater tendency to get in most if not all colors, at which point your game is almost completely scripted. I also found the 1-round game was too short, while the 3-round game was clearly too long. Unfortunately the scoring system is such that a 2-round game isn't feasible.

This may just get into the Top 200 in the next couple months.

Rated: 8 - While not perfect or a must play game, I do consider this a game that should be in every mid-sized collection. Terrific production value, simple rules and clean game play.

Wonderful. It's like the Tiramisu of games.

Rated 7 - A nice 'deduction' game with a bit of luck thrown in.

I'd like to play this again. The "Tiki tokens" as I call them seemed undervalued to some, but have potential, perhaps if they are used as a module instead of normal.

First play ran long. I think that was just because we were learning how the game works. I really like the idea, but if that length continues, this won't get played. That is why I am rating this a 6 for now. I sincerely hope that was just our first game.

I few days ago someone geekmailed me that I had listed Bang! twice. I went ahead and deleted the second entry, but that also meant that I was listing the Top 24 and not the Top 25.

Here is number 25 in it's rightful place.
(now I know why I ended up with an extra that I deleted when I was making it)

Rated: 8 - In Shadow Hunters you assume the guise of a Hunter, a Shadow, or someone caught in the middle. You need to figure out who's who and then scramble to strike down your enemies. An arsenal of crazy equipment streams into the game, with some players smiting each other with cursed swords and cleavers while others put their backs to the wall and blaze away with .45s. You will survive longer if you can conceal your identity, but if you reveal yourself, you may sate your vampire's thirst, or bloody your werewolf's claws, or...

Now I know what some of you are thinking. You're thinking, "I've played this game with a different theme, and it sucked." Don't let that discourage you. The mechanics here defy precedent by actually working. The deduction, the movement, the locations, the equipment, the combat: it works. None of this "I was eliminated before my first turn" nonsense.

The clincher is that you need 6-8 players for Shadow Hunters to shine (I suspect 6 is best). Bean-trading and path-finding are fun and all, but a heavy dose of unrestrained fantasy violence can't hurt, right?

Rated: 8.2 - Excellent - has been described as "like Bang!" I would say it is everything Bang! should be. Half an hour long, with lots more subtlety, much less equipment and much more in the way of opportunities to determine friend from foe.

Now, after 4 plays, this one is still growing on me. Sure the opening round or two is fairly random (rather like the opening rounds of Werewolf), but you can learn an awful lot in those first couple of rounds and you soon home in on your enemies.

*Update* A dozen plays and still great.

Rated: 5 - For what it is, pretty good, but not really my type of game. The deduction aspect is the only part that was of any interest to me, and for that I'd rather play Sleuth.
