This is the fourth year I've used a Geeklist to record my favorite games of the year; for the previous incarnations see 2005, 2006, 2007, and 2008.

While there are plenty of 2009 releases I have yet to play, at this point 2009 looks to be a mediocre year, but one completely lacking in real hits for me. After an awful 2008, my _average_ rating for 2009 releases rebounded significantly. But there were almost no games at the extremes; there was only one game (Hansa Teutonica) I rate below a three, and only one game I rate above a 7. As a result, I like the games on my favorites list for the year even less than last year.

To give an idea of what I was choosing from, the full list of 2009 releases I've played to date (full games only; I don't track expansions played):

Aladdin's Dragons Card Game, Alcazar, Alea Iacta Est, Arena - Roma II, At the Gates of Loyang, Automobile, Baltimore and Ohio, Bastos! (from Filipino Fruit Market), Bombay, Bonnie and Clyde, Burger Joint (not considered for this list, though), Bürger, Baumeister & Co., Captain Pirate, Carson City, Don Q. und der Dreh mit den Windmühlen, Dungeon Lords, Egizia, Eine Gegen Einge, Endeavor, Erosion, Finca, Fits, Gelini Nightlife, Genial Spezial, God's Playground, Gonzaga, Hansa Teutonica, Havana, Homesteaders, Keltis Der Weg der Steine, Keltis: Das Kartenspiel, Last Train to Wensleydale, Macao, Maori, Opera, Peloponnes, Pocket Rockets, Power Grid Factory Manager, Power Struggle, Ra The Dice Game, Ramses Pyramid, Roll Through the Ages: The Bronze Age, Steam, Tinadahan (from Filipino Fruit Market), Tobago, Tokyo Train, Triumvirate, Ubongo extrem - Mitbringspiel, Waterloo, Würfel Express

And the older releases I played for the first time in 2009:

18VA, A Castle For All Seasons, After the Flood, Alice in Wonderland - Parade, Ammoniten-Rennen, Armchair Cricket, Astron, Auction Bridge, Bloom, Build Puzzle Town, Carrousel, Cartel, Castellers, Caveat Emptor, Chamelequin, Channel X, Circus Maximus, Conquer Your Market, Crusader Rex, Days of Steam, Der Name der Rose, Digging, Dixit, Dodge City, Dominator, Don Q. hat sich mit den Schafen in der Wolle, Doubletrack, Dozo, Dragon Lairds, Duck Dealer, Fast Flowing Forest Fellers, Finito, FleetBoard, Garibaldi, Halali, High 7, Imagination, Jet Set, Juwelenzauber, Klickado, Knights, Kolonial Afrika, Low Bidder, Löwendynastie, Lungarno, Majority, Memo Street, Monuments: Wonders of Antiquity, MOW, Namutoni, Netzwerk, Pan-Kai, Peeper, Penalty, Pixelator, Quebec 1759, Robot Master, Robo-Tory, Royal Palace, Sator Arepo Tenet Opera Rotas, Schwarzmarkt, Sing Sing, Snit's Revenge!, Snow Tails, Space Blast, Sutter's Mill, Sylla, Texas Glory: 1835-36, The 3 Commandments, The Election Game (from The Next President), The Quantumgame, Till Eulenspiegel, Tintenherz Das Spiel zum Film, Track-Gammon, Ultimate, Uruk: Wiege der Zivilisation, Wasabi, Wealth of Nations, Yahtzee Free For All

A nice, harmless game in the tradition of Ubongo. I discovered some time ago that I don't need to own or play these games, but they're easy to have fun with when someone else wants to play them.

A game in the tradition of Clocktowers, but with a bit more interesting theme and a bit more interesting mechanisms. I like it, though it hasn't gone over well enough with others to give me any confidence in its long term viability in my collection.

Tobago is a fine game. It takes the concept of Old Town, and truly smooths out the rough edges.

But I don't love it. I'll try it again - my older son enjoyed it - but I'm not convinced it will survive more than ~5 plays.

Peloponnes is likely as enjoyable an eight-decision game as I've played. But while I'd hoped it might become a regular filler for me, I'm not so sure. In particular, the lack of meaningful difference between stone and wood is rubbing me the wrong way.

You know, the fact that three Knizia designs show up on this list is very telling. While his recent games are rarely favorites of mine, they're usually well thought out, and work to a reasonable extent. Keltis: Der Weg der Steine still stands out; it might be my favorite design of Knizia's in the past five years. It's a good filler, and is particularly good with three.

Factory Manager is the one 2009 I'm reasonably certain I'll still be playing in 2014. I just wrote up a review, but in brief, it's a tight, quick economic game, that for me made it to 14 plays in the blink of an eye. I actually played in seven times in a week, and was still coming back to it after that - always a good sign.

Thank you, Dan Blum.

Talking with Dan about Guenter Cornett, he noted that a copy of this game was available on the BGG marketplace. When he decided not to take the plunge, I did, and was rewarded (after going through a translation I'm not sure anyone else will ever use) with a fascinating game in the tradition of Auf Achse, but with far more for players to manage than getting goods from point A to point B.

Interesting - my top three discoveries for 2009 were all well more than 30 years old. I guess my interest in older games was well rewarded.

I can thank Cici for finally trying this game; Lorna put it up in the auction, and I made a bid without really thinking about the game I was bidding on. Having won and received the game, it only seemed fair to try it out - and lo and behold, it was very enjoyable. I look forward to playing it more, and soon.

It's a wonderful little game, and another entry on the "If I'm ever so daffy as to start publishing games I want to republish _this_" list. (Maybe I should actually make such a list someday...)

Rising stars for 2009 (games I first played before 2009, but which I enjoy significantly more now than at the start of the year):

Planet Steam - this game took the biggest leap forward for me in 2009, going from borderline keeper to one of my 50 favorite games.

1846 - I enjoyed 1846 quite a bit before 2009, but over the course of the year it moved from "one of my favorite non-2038 18xx games" to being my very favorite such game.

Hammer of the Scots - I finally got to play it a second time in 2009, and discovered that I enjoy it quite a bit, and notably more than other recent block wargames I've played.
