There are lots of games where you would love to go first because it can mean a significant advantage. There are lots of games where you wouldn't care what order you go in because it won't really affect you.

Then there is the third kind of game, the one where you DREAD going first because it's either strategically disadvantageous or it means something silly and embarassing (like you are the last person to get sick) or maybe even both!

What games do you hate winding up as the first player in?

Not only is it a disadvantage to act first in Cartagena, it also means you look the most like a pirate arrrh . During halloween time that may be ok, but other times it's less desirable. Also, your status of looking the most like a pirate is not likely to change amongst your friends so you'll probably be stuck going first all the time. (especially if your friends are sticklers or like ribbing you about it)

On a player's turn, you get to chose to play a tile or move your character. The first person doesn't get the choice since there isn't anywhere to move to yet, and MUST play. This often means that the people following will move if it's a good tile (such as Find coin).

in Nexus Ops, the first player starts with 8 rubium, then each player thereafter gets +3, which means that the fourth player gets 17 to start. This puts the starting player at a considerable disadvantage

Though here at journey's end I lie in darkness buried deep, beyond all towers strong and high, beyond all mountains steep, above all shadows rides the Sun, and Stars forever dwell: I will not say the Day is done, nor bid the Stars farewell.

I'd much rather go last. I like being able to synergize my two starting placements. The only way to know for sure where the second one will be is to go last.

The person in the lead has to move first. All players move (you can usually move anywhere on the board) and then all players can conduct one attack (also in turn order). This means that all your enemies who want to pound on you will be able to move within attack range. Meanwhile, all your enemies that you want to pound on will move away from you (out of your attack range).

The person with most power plants cities feels it big time during the Buying Resource phase. Usually having to pay through the nose because everyone else has scooped up the cheap resources and/or are hoarding the resources the leader may find useful.

I've played this game three times and I've always had to start as the emperor. You don't get an elector (a special ability to use in the first of five turns) while everyone else does. Also, when there's an election, people automatically vote against you no matter what you do, mistakenly believing that the emperor's throne is a huge advantage that must be taken away from its initial owner as soon as possible. Thus, you lose the throne before reaping any benefit from it.

The key is not to be the one 'leading' the round, as it's about the last one to play. In between, gets a chance at a 'lesser' action or gamble for the main action. But, the person leading doesn't get much choice, but to hope he's the only one.

Going first is lousy in this one because the scoring is done at the end of the round when the animal cards run out. The first player often has to be more conservative and can't time scoring nearly as well as the last player in the round due to the fear that the animal card deck might run out.

Not that I technically know what it's like to be first but I can see where being in the lead attracts attention and the venom of other players.
