Bernie and I were repeat players while Doug, Darrel, and Kathy were trying it out for the first time.

I raced out the front and got challenged by Bernie at the end and he would have won had the board not had one little kink and the end. Poor Cathy had one turn where she had nothing except 1's and 5's which both numbers were bad.

We played two games of this, for many it was their first play. It was such a big hit on the first play we played it again. The last round of the last game I had two keys and the bag and I was ready to declare victory but Darrel traded me the Black Pearl which prevents declaring victory. I knew Russell and Pete were on my team so I attacked Pete hoping to lose so that he could see my cards and declare victory. Russell helped me attack with double strength (Nooo!!! I don't want your help). Luckily all the other team came to Pete's defense and he won the battle, see my cards, and was able to declare victory on his turn (Thank you other team!).

I played with Brian and Mike while Bernie watched. I took a chance with the Treasure Chest and it paid off I ended up with a ton of gold. Surprisingly, Brian was able to win plugging away with one of the +1 Card +1 Action cards from Intrigue. I still don't know how he won.

1/5/10 Brian's House

Age of Empires III was the game of the night. I was able to get 3 sugar goods early on and the "+3 gold per sugar" building came up which I jumped on. I got another sugar and was rolling in dough.

Tim went for a collecting trade goods strategy. Brian went for Discoveries which he got unlucky on a couple of key attempts. Stewart had a colonization strategy with the +1 Missionary early on, plus a number of ships, and a building that allowed him to steal coins from everybody else according to how many ships he had. Mike had a goal of getting to 20 points

The only building that didn't come out was the +1 victory point per 5 coins, which I was planning my whole game around. So I declared the game broken. However, in the last turn I was able to adjust so the game is exquisitely balanced. My strategy switched to get somebody in every colony on the board with the 2 VP per occupied colony. I was able to keep them with the +1 Militia anytime someone attacked me. Finally, I took away a key building from Stewart sealing victory.

Oh, what a nail biter! The last cure was coming on Roland's turn. We set up everything to make it work. All we needed to avoid was drawing three cities in South America that were on the verge of Outbreak. So, we drew them one at a time. First came Baghdad, we're ok. Next, Essen, Germany, Excellent. And finally, Sao Paulo Brazil, AH NO!! Outbeaks all over the Continent and we lose.

Brian as Mordrog and One Fist and I as Battlemage Jaes and Ronan of the Wild took on the new and improved silver humanoids. First we hit an outdoor encounter with a pair of Stone Golems. We just, bravely, waited in the trees and waited for Mordrog to run out strike him and run back eventually kill him.

Then the heroes reached the destination of Fool's Rapids. It was a pair of brother sorcerers that would heal up to the higher strength brother each turn. Ronan ran around webbing things and he actually killed something this time too. He opened two silver treasures revealing no treasures but plenty of gold and potions and a couple of Conquest Points.

Heroes 12
Overlord 15

Which wasn't too bad considering another city was razed for 5 conquest by the Overlord.

Tony and Tim came over for Friday night games.

Hansa Teutonica was the first game. We played three player which meant we used a marker that limits the zones you can play in, well he can be moved anywhere but only two spaces per turn and if you want to move the guy further it takes an action.

My strategy was to take as many actions as possible so any chance I got to build my action track without costing too much I took it. I was able to take all 5 actions by the end plus I picked up three bonus tokens throughout the game to give me another 11 actions. After that I focused on clearing my tech tree and blocking when appropriate. I actually cleared all of the tech tree by the end and had a 8 person network with a 4 multiplier for 32 points.

Tony and Tim focused on getting VPs by building on the board. Unfortunately for them, my action machine was up and running for too long for them to come close.

So we played with Umlaut Deck, a quirky Austrian promotional deck of 16 Occupations and 16 Minor Improvements.

I had a farm with an Environmentalist, Unusual Architecture and Emergency Housing which allowed me to use a Stable to house another family member. My farm looked pretty at the end with decent points in everything except cattle. Very environmentally friendly and sustainable. I was also able to take on a Lovable Vagabond (so each round I was supposed to take a begging card I took one less).

Tim had an ugly farm with all kinds of empty lots but being a shrewd Austrian Industrialist and Factory Farmer he built all sorts of Ovens and Workshops then he ran his cattle through the meat grinder for points over and over scoring something like 25 bonus points.

Tony felt his cards weren't that great but he was able to acquire a guest worker early on that helped quite a bit.

Pandemic
I’ve been wanting to play this for some time now and tonight I talked my wife into a 2 player game.
We started off strong moving from city to city treating the diseases – We thought we were making some progress when boom, out comes an Epidemic! Lucky us no Outbreaks.
So, with a false feeling of ease having survived our first Epidemic! We were able to get to a research station and administer our first cure. Moving along feeling good about our progress when all of a sudden BOOM our second Epidemic! We did avoid an Outbreak and continued on our mission to save the world. Hoping that the Epidemic came up early and we now have some breathing room –
We have now established two cures and I was in progress in eradicating the Black Death when BOOM!!!, the third Epidemic happened. This time we’re not so lucky. We had an Outbreak – With the outbreak meter moving up the scale quickly and no time to waste, we quickly found the third cure.
Now with little to no hope for saving the world, although we refuse to give up, we tried to meet up where the mustard yellow gas of death was making its way across South America, and into the USA.
Now all Epidemic cards are out and multiple chain reactions are happening with one final breath of life we move into position and we lost. (Sorry anticlimactic)

Running out of cards and no more hope left, the one chance the world depended on for survival, burned in a fiery death of yellow mustard plague.
With the disease spreading and the world dying we can only hope that maybe somewhere a hero will surface to strike this disease out, until then good bye cruel world.

Now as I see it as a first game at the easiest level we should have cleared the board no problem.
Some key observations – Major disadvantage playing only two players – We had the Scientist played by my wife and the Medic played by myself.
With the two player game you only get two of the team members to attempt to eliminate the diseases, with limited added bonuses from their special abilities –
The other observation, we could have done allot better with our actions early in the game before things got to the panic mode – Such as build more Research Stations.
Even though my wife said she really didn’t see the strategy early in the game, she’d be willing to play it again.
I think this need to come out again quickly before she loses interest.
I like the co operative game style – either everyone wins or loses. The game is allot faster moving then perceived and the theme of curing the diseases and saving the world great.
This was my first game and I look forward into playing again.

Although, it wasn't called SS when I purchased my copy, we played this one at Grant's on the 1st.

Being the equalizer, I had split my forces on both sides of the board. I figured if I got in a bind, I'd move my lone army to regroup.

LOL YEAH this happened on turn 1 ... I attacked Frank's army on the small island to eliminate one of his armies early on. HMM, I eliminated his army and Scott's boy, Junior, came off the mainland to crush me an gloat about it...OH how he'll pay for that!!

Next on my agenda, SURVIVAL. Grant has the eastern board eaten up and one of my 2 remaining armies running for his life. Luckily I got Stevie (the 5th player) to attack ARMIES of both Grant in the east and Junior in the middle. It was his best option anyway, since he was sandwiched between them. Better to attack when you are ready than to let your opponents be ready for your attack. Stevie ended up destroying 1 army unit from both players.

REVENGE. Same turn as above...Stevie attack one of Junior's armies in the center of the ever expanding blue mass in the middle and I HIRE 10,000 "loyal" Ronin and BREAK Junior's back by destroying another of his armies that strayed to close to my border. DIE PIGDOG!! That's what he gets for not making peace with me, as Frank and I did when Junior got the edge on us. Frank and I ceased hostilities for the rest of the game to focus on Junior (never feel too confident on your position, you WILL be caught offguard).

I ended up eliminating Grant from the game and obtained all of his forces and territories. 32!! If I had truly planned this to happen, I'd have attacked elsewhere to obtain the other 3 to INSTA-WIN!

Next turn, I needed a win. Frank had ONE army remaining and the required territories for me to win. GIDDY with a WIN on the cuff. I forgot to put an attack arrow chit down used for designating attacks.

Pointing this out to the SOURED Junior that I simply forgot to put it down. He didn't want me to be able to attack. NO attack was granted...WEAK... I immediately said that Stevie will win since he had all of his armies remaining and was going to clean up the east of my sparsely defended provinces.

Pretty much by getting screwed with the entire CHITTY ordeal. I essentially played KINGMAKER for Stevie.

Who says a leader can't be bought.

Roland, Cates, and Brian played on the overland map of Terrinoth instead of descending into its dungeons. We played with the Doom Track and leveled up every 3 experience points for a faster game. Roland and Cates rampaged through the land buying bows, swords, and allies which helped them to level up on a consistent basis. Brian fell victim to bad luck and floundered for a few turns before he hit his stride but it was too late to catch up. The Doom Track expired and Margath attacked Cates who was most powerful (by a die roll). Cates killed the evil Dragonlord for the victory.

Roland took the British and Cates played the American rebels. It was a back and forth bloody battle with a few surprises on both sides. The American's only chance was to weaken British forces and then ambush them while they were down. But the British supply lines were too well established and reinforcements came to often for any ambush to work. Before the end General Washington gave up and the British kept the colonies for the crown.

Long live King George!

This one my younger son got for Christmas - I played it with Chris we played 4 games.

At first we just moved pieces around and I scored the 1st 2 games and then all of a sudden the angles and the board markings made allot of sense and I used them to my advantage.
Once I determined how much easier it was using the markings on the board I showed my son.
So I was up 3 games to none, when my son made an amazing score against me, I have to say his score against me was more impressive than any of my scores.
So even though it was 3 to 1, I still give the overall victory to my son for the amazing negotiation of angles and the massive crush to my ego.

A package showed up in the mail so quick call some people to play. Brian and Stewart joined me for a learning game.

It ran a little over 4 hours with about 1 hour of looking for what it is that Dragons do until I realized there was a reference card still in the box.

Brian took Elves, Stewart Undead, and I went with the Chaos Humans. The game is lavishly overproduced with 3d mountains and linen finish with beautiful artwork on every side of every piece. The minis feel a bit small at first but they're about right for the amount that come out on the board.

The gameplay is top notch with order cards that work like Race for the Galaxy with a twist called the Supremacy bonus. If that card is the highest numbered card played that year, you get the bonus. There's four seasons each year with some event happening each season and some clean up or secondary effect.

Brian was able to ally with two dragons, then proceeded to fly over mountain passes with Pegasus Riders alongside. He also picked up two powerful Title cards. I allied with a Giant and started to build some Chaos Lords. Stewart spread out quickly with units and land with the Undead.

Brian won with 5 dragon runes (it should've been 6).

2 games.
Marisa

Tony
1st game we got killed really bad - i think we only had 2 turns each.
The 2nd game we had enough cards and availible labs to get the last 2 cures. We needed 1 more turn and the 8th outbreak happened - oh so close
