First entry in 2010 in this continuing GeekList to let us all know what wargames have gotten your interest during the month.

I am of mixed thoughts as to whether it is better to create this list closer to the end of the month so that folks know exactly what they had played. The other option is to start it at the beginning on the month and let folks add to it as they play. Starting it near the middle of the month splits the difference and seems to work, so here it is.

One thing that I like about the list is that it is owned by us all since it is created by us all. Community owned and operated. That's cool!

Since there was some gaming going on over the holidays, let us cheat a little and include some of those late December games too. It's all good.

So, let us know what got you playing this month. What tickled your fancy? What got your juices flowing? What buttered your bread?

I have been feeling a bit down what with all the unplayed games on my shelf. Add on the fact that I do not really "know" a game since I tend to play them once and then move on to the next one. So, I resolved to take steps to alleviate that situation by selecting a couple of games and then trying to play them often over the next several months.

This game was one of my choices since I have others that are unplayed and use similar mechanics (PoG and "Pursuit of Glory"). So, learning this one should help with picking up the others I hope. I am also learning CDGs, so this covers that angle too. I have a FtF opponent and I am also playing Mike (Scoobysnacks) in a PBEM game. Both games are going great.

I am the Axis vs Mike's Allies and he is helping me along as I learn. He is a great person to play with. Currently we are in Turn #1 and are getting in a card play every day so far I think.

My FtF game is going nicely also. We are just starting Turn #5 after, oh, about 2 hours of play. I am the Allies in that one and my focus is to try to get the mechanics of the system down. I am not too worried about the card play for now, but I am trying to play as Events those cards that are precursors for other cards. The Allies have cleared North Africa as far as El Agheila, which is still Axis controlled. I have almost no presence in the Near East and I am probably not as advanced in East Africa as I should be.

I am having a great time with both games. Very new for me and very fun.

One thing that was interesting for me was some of the card hand ideas which appear to conflict. I thought it would be a good idea to play "2" OPs cards as Events as much as possible so as to get them out of your hand and, thus, bump up the average number of OPs in your deck. Part of that plan would be to keep early "4" OPs cards available unless they were really critical Events. However, my FtF opponent feels that it is far better to play any and all early cards as quickly as possible so as to ensure that you get all cards in 1940 and 1941. As I am new to the game and this system, this seems to conflict and I find it intriguing. Maybe I am wrong and there is no conflict there? Time will tell.

This is my ongoing PBEM with that gentleman of wargamers, Bill (billyboy).

We are at Turn #16 and things are starting to heat up. After a rather bloodless first half of the game where Bill chased my Axis to the gates of Bardia only to have me chase him back eastward to Mersa Matruh, Bill is starting to punch his way west again. I am too strung out along the coastal road due to supply issues (the game within the game). I am on the horns of a dillema.

Lots of fun. I have said it before and will say it again...there is a lot of game in this small package. Good bang for the buck.

I just acquired this game last week, have read the rules and assimilated the differences (read: improvements) between it and its predecessor, 1862. Tonight, after I get home from my weekly RPG session, I plan to try a solo run-through of the Gettysburg scenario. The package looks pretty solid: rules are fine, the maps are quite good, and the counters are functional. We'll see how it plays.

I got to play Unhappy King Charles! few days ago and wasn’t disappointed. It’s not only a good wargame but also an interesting simulation of the English Civil War. Situations are intriguing and players are kept on toes. I want to play more right now!

Just finished a solo play of scenario 1 (wrote an AAR for it as well.) I'm relatively new to operational level games, having come from the ASL world. So far, I really like the SCS series (having played several games of SP II back in December) and looking forward to playing more titles, including Afrika.

The scale is probably what I like best about this title (1 hex = 400 meters and most units are company size.) It plays fast and gives a good sense of what happened during the battle. I'm now finishing up punching & clipping the remaining counters so I can get the campaign game setup and going.

I'm giving the East Front Series another try by playing Typhoon with the Kiev to Rostov ruleset. These games are monsters, with lots of maps, counters and rules, so it's quite a change from the smaller, lighter games I've been playing lately.

Have Axis and Allies Pacific: 1940 set up at the moment. Tried it once last month for a number of turns and had a good time (although I was surprised at how strong Thad was able to make the UK position and thus able to threaten my Western Flank). After completing this play, I'm looking at either Battle Above the Clouds or maybe turning to some old friends like Peloponnesian War, Breakout: Normandy, or maybe Red Dragon Rising.

I've already played 4 games of Where There is Discord this year (went 3-1 in those games cool ) and played the short scenario of London's Burning as well(and barely eeked out a win 9-6 ninja ). So the year is off to a good start! thumbsup

Have started playing this game.
So far, after two plays, I like the system.
It tickles a completely different itch than Memoir'44, and you can OP fire in this game.
The WP have won both times when playing the "First Moves" scenario.

I've been collecting The Gamer's Brigade Series Games, and yet have not gotten them onto the table until the past few weeks. (I am in another one of those "let's play games that sit on our shelves phases, that you may know about quite well).

This game, with the Orders that you Must Write, the Delay of those Orders, the Tension that Builds, the Maddening Element of Wanting More Command Points for More Orders to be written...well, it all adds up into a fantastic gaming experience.

You really get the essence, the true feeling that commanders must have had during the ACW...I am really appreciating this system, and would recommend pulling them off the shelves, if you haven't already.

Cheers,

Will

My hex & counter wargaming for the near future is going to be solitaire games (though I have started back up with miniatures games) so I've decided to give this classic a spin. Just finished reading the rules, I'll pick a scenario and put a squad together this week. The rules don't seem difficult but the AI might be a little tricky at first. I'm hoping it will be fun.

Always ASL, I get to play a few hours every other week or so. I wish I had more time for other games and more time to get to my local game store game nights but it just hasn't panned out this year or last or the one before. I did meet a couple of new opponents at our FLGS but so far have had minimal time to make it out there. I'll definately play Bastogne or Afika with ya Brandon!!!

We've got the Among the Ruins scenario going. I'm playing the Americans. I've managed to get a tank bogged down in rubble right off the bat. We took a couple of month break from ASL, so it was time to get it back on the table.

Still got a PBEM going of this. I'm the French. In the last couple of turns I got smacked with Small Pox and then a Surrender card, costing me the Forks of the Ohio. That Small Pox is nasty. Especially when they roll a 5 or 6, which happened in our game. I got in a couple of successful raids though. This is my first play and I'm enjoying it. Works pretty well for PBEM too.

My other PBEM going at the moment. It's our first play and we're up to turn 5 I believe. The Soviets have been having their way with the Romanians, but the Germans are in firm control of Stalingrad and the central area of the map. Another one that works pretty well PBEM. The only awkward part of PBEM with this one is knowing when your opponent may want to spend air points during your turn. We've just set a rule, like spend an air point for all combat between 3:1 and 9:1. It's not a perfect solution, as it may lead to you spending an air point on some crappy 1-step unit that you are likely going to lose anyway, but it does allow us to keep the turns moving with a lot less back and forth emailing.

No wargames yet this month, but my buddy Al and I are going to start digging into this one on Wednesday. I've played Stonewall Jackson's Way and I'm interested to see what changes they've made to the system.

Dove into this one by starting the 4.3 scenario. Might have been a bit much to bite off though. As a new player to the system (but not to tactical WW2 games!), the rules seem a bit vaguer than they should be in some places. I also find it interesting that there are multiple ways to figure out LOS, and you can get different results depending on which method you use! This seems a bit odd to me.

Still, the core of the system is easy to grasp, and I love the historical research that goes into these modules. I'm liking the system and want to play more.
