Here for the 8th time annually is my personal list of the games I've set my sights upon most often during the preceding calendar year!

If you're interested in the lists from past years, this link

http://www.boardgamegeek.com/geeklist/lists/user/ssmooth

should lead you in the right direction.

I play with a regular Thursday night group, made it to two or three gaming weekends/conventions during the course of the year, occasionally attended one of Atlanta's Meet-Up Groups for gaming, and played with family and friends and in particular a lot of two-player games with my girlfriend Angelika, with whom incidentally I celebrated a fifth anniversary this month.

I'll start with the games I played five times in 2009 and work down to the game I played 41 times.

There were eight games I played 5 times each during 2009:

Chess
FITS
Bananagrams
Himmelsstürmer
Carcassonne
Rosenkönig
Zoff in Buffalo
Ab in den Pool!

Ab in den Pool! is one of my favorite icebreakers with people who have been casually roped into a game. It's easy as pie but has a nice gamerly hook and often an ending that rewards cleverness.

Chess is sort of the reverse of that: The classic, serious game that lets me establish my bona fides with someone who is already convinced he knows and likes games but isn't so sure that all the frivolous Eurogames are going to be worthy of his attention.

Viva Topo! is a fine game to play with youngsters, who are often totally engrossed by the drama of the cat chasing down the mice. We've found lots of grownups enjoy its whimsy just as much as the kids!

M is an odd tile-laying and tile-picking-up game which I've been playing for a number of years. In 2009 it came to the table two or three times more than usual because Angelika liked it, and we discovered that it works pretty well even for just two players!

Hase und Igel, the original Spiel des Jahres winner, is still a favorite in these parts. I had fun bringing my edition -- the one in the picture that looks like it was illustrated for a children's book in 1935 -- to a party. When I pulled it out as a suggestion for six adults to play, I literally got the question, "Are you serious?" I was, and in short order had the fun of demonstrating that the game was serious as well!

I got to play Le Havre seven times during 2009. This sequel to Agricola has some advantages over its predecessor -- the one-family-member approach is particularly slick, for example -- but takes even longer to play. (It also takes even longer to set up and put away!) Fortunately a few of us are not too fainthearted to tackle it.

Jet Set is a much newer game which I'm also always very pleased to get to the table. It's a very large map of Europe, so first of all, your table has to be big enough to handle it! And then you need players who are willing to scrap for cash. A very competitive economic routes-and-rates game with a heck of a deadline for an ending.

Oh well, we're in the habit of tossing our coins into the box anyhow. A fine little classic Knizia game, quick but distinctive, that stretches all the way to six players.

I really enjoy this little game of placing tiles so that they come up in patches of matching flowers. Unfortunately Flowerpower is out of print, so even when I teach it to someone new and they like it, it's hard to keep it in play on THEIR table. Nevertheless, if I manage to sneak it in seven times a year, I guess I should be happy.

The classic Richard Garfield game which created a sensation with our Thursday night group back in the 20th century still makes regular appearances on our tables. We're purists -- we stick to the original rules (virtual bots) and are just as happy if no option cards ever come into play. I personally got to run RoboRally nine times during 2009.

This game of hand management and rat control by Stefan Feld is one I have found surprisingly endearing. I wasn't especially impressed by Notre Dame on the first playing or two, but now that it is a comfortable old shoe I am always happy to slip into it, and I slipped into it 10 times in 2009. Not too short, not too long, and works well for every number from two to five.

Darjeeling has been a special favorite since first discovery. It is an odd little economic game in which it might be said that timing is everything. Not bad with two players, but it gets better as you add more up to its maximum of five. I was happy to get to play it 10 times in 2009. Collect your tea crates on the factory floor, then make your shipments at the right moment that you'll be paid for them repeatedly, and you might just thread the needle to a win.

Finca came to our attention as a Spiel des Jahres nominee in 2009, and as a nice medium-weight family game it has hit a sweet spot and turned out to get 13 plays during the year. The game has a wonderful, colorful eye appeal, and the "windmill" at the heart of the game where you go to collect your fruit is just the right balance of simple and mind-bugging. This is another one that Angelika likes and we have found to work well with two, three, or four players.

Indian Chief is a card game I made up, based on the jump-rope chant "Rich man, poor man, beggar man, thief," back in 2004. Angelika got interested in it and persuaded me to play Indian Chief with several different groups (15 times altogether), and I've also posted the rules here at BGG so that you can try it, too. It's a game of hand management with an interesting idea or two, and it'll work for 2-8 players.

Another Spiel des Jahres nominee, this one in 2006, Just4Fun has for some reason never been granted an American publication. It's a game of competitive 4-in-a-row tic-tac-toe -- squares can change hands -- where your choice of squares is determined by your hand of cards. Easy to learn, easy to play, but you'll do better if you pay close attention! I was in 18 games of it in 2009.

I've been a special fan of racing games for a long time, and Powerboats is the best new system I've seen come barreling down the pike in years! The movement system is brilliantly simple and yet full of exploitable tricks, all based on these wonderful little blue d3. You shift gears by adding or subtracting one d3 on your turn, and you shift directions by one click (60 degrees on the hex) before you make your power move for the turn. Smart and fast -- a race for six can take 20 minutes -- Powerboats deserves the attention of every racing game fan. By being semi-relentless about it, I got it to my tables 22 times during 2009.

A truly terrific board-and-card game for two by Reiner Knizia from 2006, Auf der Reeperbahn slips down from its status as my most-played game of the year for the first time since I discovered it three years ago. I've played it over 180 times and am still being surprised by the situations and challenges being discovered in its play. One of the dozen games I rate a 10, I played it 29 times in 2009, mostly with Angelika. (We regard ourselves as the two most experienced Auf der Reeperbahn players in the world.) I've got a nice review of it with a good rules explanation at http://www.boardgamegeek.com/thread/166606.

I don't usually count games I play on-line, but I'm making an exception for the 38 games of Brass (plus 1 game face-to-face) that I played in 2009 at http://wargamessoc.union.shef.ac.uk/brass/index.php. This excellent game really shines on-line because you get all the time you want to plan your turns. I've learned Brass in a way that would never have been possible face-to-face, because I'd never have found time for that many face-to-face games. And in fact I can't find time for the on-line games any more either... but I'm glad to have gotten these in!

I played 41 games of Agricola in 2009, but here I have to admit that some of these were solo games, and I don't usually count solo games. But Agricola has the solo game in the rulebook, and once I got my own copy of the game I played a couple of series and enjoyed them thoroughly, learning the Occupations cards in the process. I don't think I'll be playing solo again, since it reached the point that it was just a question of whether I'd draw the cards that allowed the best scoring, but it was fun while it lasted. And I'm happy to report that even though I got to know the game quite well, I'm still quite capable of screwing it up and losing when somebody is sitting across the table from me! Truly a classic game and one I look forward to playing again and again.
