For someone who never did much tabletop miniatures gaming, I have been a fan of Rackham games for quite some time. I adore their art, their game design, their fluff, and their overall dedication to aesthetics.

While I am not terribly impressed by their translation and editing, I confess I rather like the occasionally untranslated bit of French in their work--being from Quebec and fluent in French, it feels strangely like an in-joke we share. Beyond that, though, the rough edges in some of Rackham's products are a small price to pay for their overall quality.

Here is my story.

One of my early trades here at BGG was for Hybrid, a game I had despaired of ever being able to enjoy due to my inability to paint figures. One day a user offered trade involving his copy of Hybrid, whose figures he had painted himself. I believe I considered the trade for perhaps a tenth of a second before I greedily accepted.
The sheer beauty of the game prompted me to write one of my first reviews here, and the fact that the painting had been done so expertly didn't hurt either.
The rules are badly laid out, but that has been fixed by a re-write (http://www.conf-federation.org.uk/forum/index.php?action=dow...) and shouldn't detract from a well-designed miniatures boardgame. It has nice combat options and excellent scenarios. Someday I plan on tracking down its expansion.
Rumours abound of a new Hybrid game using the game system in Okko: Era of the Asagiri. I would be all over that.

When I heard that Rackham was getting into pre-painted figures, I was extremely pleased. Hybrid had given me the urge to try more of their products, but again I was limited since I don't paint miniatures. Granted, this was sci-fi (I tend to prefer fantasy games, as a rule) and intended to compete with 40K, but I was still keen to take advantage of this change in direction. Sadly, I never got into the game, but I still have the urge to check it out.

When their flagship game Confrontation followed suit, I was overjoyed. Subsequent FFG sales have allowed me to amass a lot of Confrontation stuff--and the army boxes, which come with preset armies ready to go, let me get armies from the newer factions.
The fantasy world of Aarklash is really one of the big draws here. They've managed to avoid most (but not all) of the fantasy tropes that really bug me--I am sick of the standard Lord of the Rings/D&D/Warhammer business, but Confrontation presents a refreshing take on heroic fantasy. I even enjoy the backstory stuff from the army books despite the lackluster writing and translation.

I picked up a copy of Confrontation's 3rd edition rulebook on a lark. Partly because it was cheap, partly because I knew it would be nice to look through simply for the photos and artwork, and partly because Rackham very kindly uploaded all of the minis' stats on their website; if I wanted to, I could proxy my 4th ed. minis and play the earlier edition. I won't likely do that, but I've enjoyed reading the book all the same.

Then there's the Confrontation RPG, Cadwallon. I was able to track down a copy really cheaply on eBay (from France), and again I am struck by how unique and imaginative their fantasy world is. My wife and some friends of mine have expressed a possible interest in doing some role-playing, and I confess when my mind wanders I start thinking of adventure hooks in Cadwallon.
As you might expect, the book is gorgeous--and huge.

It's the AT-43 racing game. I stumbled across a copy in Vancouver for $15, and I couldn't say no. My wife likes racing games, and I like Rackham, so it seemed like an obvious choice. I've only had a chance to play once, but I'm keen to try it again. It has an interesting press-your-luck element to it; instead of your speed being variable based on luck (like in Formula D(é) or Snow Tails), it's a question of how much damage you are willing to subject your vehicle to.

The Cadwallon card game. I have yet to get a copy, but soon I will. It looks like it could be a mediocre game, but I'll be frank and admit that I don't care.

The company itself also does some pretty keen things. As previously mentioned, they uploaded all of the Confrontation 3rd edition stats to their website. They also have mini 4th edition army books in PDF for the factions that haven't yet received their own full army books yet, in addition to 4th ed stats for your old 3rd ed minis. As a result, I can use my miniatures from Hybrid in Confrontation.
Also, in a move of pure class, when some of their AT-43 army books went out of print, they uploaded the full PDF for any and all to download until they can get off another print run. Awesome.
That said, I am willing to recognize the company's flaws. Their releases are sporadic and mostly late (though that's hardly rare in this industry), their material is a lot less approachable if you don't speak French, and the community of players is not as large or widespread as some other companies'. Nonetheless, I will likely be a fervent Rackham customer for quite some time.

Not so much as a game as very few people ever gave this a try (myself included), but the reading material in this set is a must for any fan of the universe of Aarklash!

A great variation on Confrontation, similar in scope to Necromunda or Mordheim. I enjoy it better because the gains by a squad per win are not as steep nor is the mismatch of warbands with vastly different renown.

we play this using the Hybrid and Cadwallon tiles too!
