SNEW February will be Saturday, February 20. I'm finding that my pile of games that I want to play seems to be getting bigger. Come and help me! We'll play some games and have a great time. Hope to see you there!

Who was there and what did they play?
Nick, Matthew - Combat Commander: Europe - Scenario 29: Operation Repulse
Wendell, ScottH - Twilight Struggle (x2), Through the Ages
Nick - Jena 20

Terry also showed up and watched us play for a bit.

The latest battle pack for Combat Commander ought to be here in time for SNEW February. If it is, that's what I'll be playing! You should play it, too!

UPDATE:
Quote:
For the next shipping batch, we will begin shipping P500 orders for the following three items on Monday, February 22nd:

Combat Commander Battle Pack #3: Normandy
Serpents of the Seas
Washington’s War

So it looks like the battle pack (as well as some other goodies) won't be here in time for SNEW. Looks like something else will have to hit the table instead!

Wendell and I played 2 games of this on his new super deluxe edition. One asterisk in the game, some of the early war optional cards were mixed in with the late war deck.
Both games had me representing the USSR, while Wendell played the US of A. We used the optional cards & China card rules.
The first game started very well for the USSR. I had a big lead in VPs by the 2nd turn, ~ -14VPs and was cruising along, until I was dumb and Wendell a genius (at least it seems that way by the outcome.
DefCon was at 2 and I had the CIA card. I also had the UN Intervention card, so no problem, except I kept delaying playing them while I was doing other stuff. On round 4, the USA played a card that causes a random USSR discard. Of course he plucked the UN card. Leaving me with 2 cards and 2 turns, forcing the play of CIA and the USA blowing up the world, but on my watch. Victory in the world's ashes for Team USA,
The 2nd game was more or less a traditional TS game. The USSR started off with a decent lead around the world and the US was forced to try and keep pace. As an interesting start, Wendell left West Germany empty at the start of the game. Instead of doing a coup on turn 1, round 1, I pushed 4 IPs into W. Germany. In the end, USSR controlled W.Germany and eventually, France & Italy too. This was after the scoring card was played, so even though I held all the BG in Europe, the scoring card was a few turns off. I did Bear Trap myself in hopes of discarding a few nasty US cards. In the end, over two turns, I rolled 5 or 6 on the die 4 or 5 times. Brutal! While I was trapped, Wendell quickly took back France and whittled W. Germany down to a tie. Wendell did draw a lot of the scoring cards this game, which hampered his IPs greatly.
In the end, the USSR hit the Late War cards with ~14 VPs and drew War Games, which was eventually played for the win (once DefCon hit 2).
Still frustrating game that I keep playing, mainly because it really is a very good game.

I'm going to SNEWS, not the Con!

Just got this.

How many people will be at Nick's? Just Nick and I?

After Matthew left, and while Wendell and Scott were finishing up Through the Ages, I ran through a solo play of Jena 20, recently included as a bonus free game in the latest issue of C3i. I had read through the rules and running through the game definitely helped them gel in my mind. It is a fairly simple game, but presents an interesting situation. The French troops, while superior, are outnumbered early on. The Prussians do have the advantage, but need to move to protect one side of the board against French reinforcements arriving there. As the game goes on, and French reinforcements arrive, they can really start to establish their will, and the Prussians need to be prepared for that. There are some big strategic decisions to be made and it is fairly interesting for as small as it is. It plays quite quickly and I could see it easily completed in less than an hour. I'd be up for giving it a try with anyone who might be interested.

I know Scott also got a copy of this one recently and I would like to try it out soon. It looks interesting, but I am really annoyed they used cheap cards with this! angry It is a CDG, so one would think that the cards would be the most important component.

I got this at UG XVI. The version is even pimped out with larger map cards & colored stones for markers. Anyone play this before? Seems interesting.

Brought but not played.

I'm feeling a bit lazy lately, which means I'm most in the mood for something that I already know how to play. FAB: The Bulge is probably about my limit. Otherwise, I'm thinking of some old standbys:

Combat Commander: Europe
Twilight Struggle
Hammer of the Scots
Paths of Glory
Hellenes: Campaigns of the Peloponnesian War

I guess Hellenes isn't an "old standby" (yet) but I've played it recently and it would be easy to play.
