Print & Play (PnP) contributions to the geek have been growing by leaps and bounds, and there are many very fine games available for free. In these tough economic times (and is it possible to have too many games?!?) PnP provides a great outlet to add some nice titles to your collection.

Searching for tags (PnP, kids) related to PnP games that are good for children to play did not yield any satisfactory results. As usual, I am sure the collective knowledge of the geek can help.

What PnP games are appropriate for children to play, defined as “around” ages 5 to 12? Since “appropriateness” may be in the eye of beholder, please describe how you think your addition would be good for kids. Thank you!

Zombie in my Pocket is an excellent PnP game. On its face, ZimP may seem to be a bad choice for this list. Grisly zombies are appropriate for kids? Whacking hordes of undead with a golf club (my favorite part!)? However, on the ZimP Files section, there is a variant “Fairy Tale in my Pocket”. Check it out!

This is a BIG hit with kids. I've played this with 8-9 year olds and they love (boys especially) the theme. You work with a basic map and customize it by adding various traps and rewards. I think you can still PnP this in its basic form, and you can purchase additional maps and scenarios. However, with a little creativity, you could easily create your own. Check it out.

My younger son and I discovered this a few weeks ago. I've pointed a few other parents to the game, and it's been equally successful with them. A short summary would be to imagine the dice game Farkle with a D&D theme.

Makin' Movies is a great family game that has elements that some kids love. You have a script and must collect the right cards (actors) for the movie that you're making. The right people and the most money usually wins when you add up the points. The idea for this game came from a 7 year old!

The SuperSlapshot PNP remake for this is great for kids. I slapped this together and played a 7 player-game with my daughter, wife and some nieces and nephews and it was a blast. It has enough strategy to not feel brainless but enough randomness to keep younger kids in it and competitive. The drafting of players and the ability of forced "trading" them with others adds a cool element.

Add in all the great characters on the cards and it takes awhile before anyone realises that it is simpy a deluxe multiplayer version of the card game War.

In Froggy Land, each player controls 6 daring and dauntless frogs trying to arrive, safe and sound, through a winding water lilies’ Path to their home. To achieve that, they would have to use all the elements (support tokens) that inhabit the Pond; moreover, they have to avoid the wicked Owl if they don’t want to lose all their advances. Once a player gets the 6 frogs to their home, she’s the winner and the game ends.

This Arabian Nights adventure appeals to all ages with its fantastical tale of Abu, the little thief who befriends Achmed, the prince of Bagdad and foils the nefarious plans of the evil grand vizier Jaffar, who seizes control of Bagdad and covets the princess of Basra. From its gorgeous, epic-scale sets to flying horses, magic carpets, all-seeing crystals, blue rose of forgetfullness, and, best of all, Rex Ingram's towering Djinni of the bottle.

Free all locations and the regime headed by Jaffar from power in Basra so that Achmed was married with the princess.

I think the game I recently released,'Smash Monster Rampage!'appeals to everyone.
-Although a grown-up would have to make the game, (or at least supervise).

The epic theme and bold, colourful design combine with uncomplicated rules to make the game a 'must play' for all ages.

It's a totally free pnp game available for download right now at

Although the game is kinda scary looking, the kids i've played it with didn't seem to care... The girls wanted to be Rosa and boys liked little Bobby Jr.

The main thing about Phobos is that it is based on memory and observation, which are few of the most important things a child should develop.

With language independence and no dice rolling, it is well balanced and plays fast so kids don't get bored. At least for a couple of hours; if you know what I mean heheeh...

If you are into dark, noir stories then this is for you

Lethargos is the sequel of The Amityville Project: Phobos, a horror, interactive, miniature game for 3-6 players.

Is been 14 days since the detective was lost in the Amityville Asylum and no one knowns anything about his disappearance. The members of the Syndicate trapped him and made him their lab pet. All this time, they try to reform his mind but they do not know that another group of people was watching his moves and knows what he wanted to achieve. On the side of the city this team plans to rescue the detective. A couple days later, the team tries to penetrate the Amytiville Asylum and they achieve it. They found the detective tied on a bed, drugged and they save him from his torture. Thanks to their plan, they managed to take him and transfer them to their hiding. There, the mastermind of the team has a plan. He has built a dangerous device capable of entering the detective's mind. The team agrees that they will try to awake the detective from his Lethargos but they must first come to same state as the detective through the new device and there is a high possibility that they will die from the pressure their minds will suffer.

In Lethargos you lead the members of the team trying to find information and awake the detective. You enter to his dream asylum and there you have to face several Ghosts, trapped memories of the detective inside his own mind which try to kill you but occasionally to help you. The Ghosts which own several abilities, are managed by an extra player who takes the role of the detective. Your purpose here is to open the 6 of the 12 Asylum Tiles and then to find the real exit in order to escape. When the last tile is revealed, several walls and one real exit are placed around the tiles and you must find the real one. If one of the team reaches the real exit, then all the team escapes the dream world.

In each round the players follow some certain actions: Movement and Search. Each player can move 1 space inside an Asylum Tile and can search the different rooms on that tile by drawing cards. These cards give different abilities which allow to the players to reveal new Asylum Tiles and trap the Ghost. At the end of each player's turn the Detective-Player rolls a special 6-sided die and based on the result he can activate a Ghost and hit a player. The Detective-Player handles an Event Deck and activates such a card for each new revealed Asylum Tile and he also owns the Phobometer. The Phobometer includes several numbers and each time a Ghost hits a Player, the Phobometer is increased. If the Phobo token reaches the last number, then you lose the game. In this game all the players must work together in order to survive and escape the Detective's Dream World. Be prepared to face your worst living nightmare!

Fear is your only god!
