Many games incorporate cards, and such, over the years, cards have become a fairly standard size: 2.5 x 3.5 inches. CCGs, traditional card games, and board games (not to mention non-game cards, such as sports and entertainment cards) have all utilized this size. Because of this, there are now a number of accessories that are made for this size card, including a variety of protective sleeves. For those who are particular about the condition of their games, or those who simply want to protect an oft-played title, these accessories are wonderful.

And then there are these games, who have eschewed all of this to make uniquely-sized cards. While interesting for a minute or so, eventually this gets to be a pain, especially if you try and use traditional sleeves on these odd-sized (or even odd-shaped) cards.

After purchasing the third game whose cards would not fit into normal sleeves (and not finding an existing list), I decided that it was well-time that a list be made on this subject. Also, note that all measurements are rounded off for ease.

Betrayal at House on the Hill uses extra-long cards: 2.25 x 4.25 inches. In sleeves, they tend to slide around, and stick out considerably. And to boot, they have black borders, which makes wear show almost immediately.

Warriors uses cards that are just shy of the normal size: 2.25 x 3.6 inches. They slide around nicely in sleeves. The expansion, Dragon Hordes, also uses this same size cards, for obvious reasons.

Ticket to Ride has the cutest cards I've ever seen: 1.5 x 2.6 inches. Unfortunately, these prove just slightly larger than half the normal size, meaning that you can't sleeve these by sliding them in sideways and trimming. And again, with the original printing black-bordered edge wear shows again... The Mystery Train expansion also uses this size card.

Memoir '44 uses a card size very similar to Warriors: 2.25 x 3.5. This is very close to normal size, but still, just thin enough that they slide around in normal sleeves but are too large for the "Japanese mini" sleeves.

Blue Moon: more extra-long cards. This size is great for showing off the game's extraordinary artwork, but bad for protecting the cards in the long-run...

The 2.25 x 3.5 inch card shows up again in San Juan. Luckily, the cards in this game are saved by two features: white borders, which show less wear, and a very high cardstock quality. Even after a number of un-sleeved plays, my personal copy still looks new.

The Settlers of Catan uses a fairly unique card-size: 2.1 x 3.1 inches. Again, though, the white borders don't show wear as much, though many people still manage to wear out decks. See also the number of Settlers expansions for more of the same sized cards.

And in the first case of non-rectangular cards (at least, in this particular Geeklist), we have The Settlers of Catan Card Game (and expansions) and its square cards. Different, but for once, this actually has a bearing on the play of the game.

My personal first encounter with extra-long cards was Heresy, the CCG from Last Unicorn. The game's artwork was nicely shown off on these cards; unfortunately, the gameplay was not quite up to par...

And the other CCG entry is Sim City. Each booster contained one extra-long card that could be placed over two adjacent blocks. It is of note that pocket pages exist for storing extra-long cards, but no protective sleeves.

For being a company that deals primarily in CCGs, you'd think that Wizards of the Coast would have used the standard card size for The Great Dalmuti; instead, it uses 2.25 x 3.4 inch cards, albeit white-bordered ones.

And to finish off the initial list, we've got Heroscape. Not content with either square or rectangular cards, we've got Heroscape's 7-hex-shaped cards, with their 18 sides. Luckily, they fit perfectly within the game (they are just smaller than the 7-hex terrain pieces, which work perfectly for storing them in). Easily the most bizarre card shape I've ever seen.

The original "dinky card game." Not only are these cards small (good for table size, not so good for shufflage), but this game uses pint-sized million-dollar-bills!

Of course, since the cards are the game, any dog-earing dooms players to foreknowledge...

See all those cards? Way to small to put them in sleeves. They are also made out of some weird matte, non-gloss paper that wears out pretty quickly. Too bad they won't fit in sleeves.
