Every year I look ahead and think about my plans, projects, and hopes for my gaming life in the year to come. The list is ridiculously late this year, because I have been consumed with work, but so what; it’s still January, after all. At the end of the year, I'll look back on my 2010 gaming and update the list with my successes and failures.

This list is open to additions, so if anyone else is getting a slow start on your 2010 plans, or has just had time to rethink them after the first hasty bout of resolution-making, and would like to record them here, you are welcome to join in. It's always interesting, and sometimes inspiring, to see what others are hoping to accomplish.

I have this on order, and we’re going to play it next weekend. This will be the 11th crayon rail game I own, and my goal for the year is to play each of them at least once. Now that my mother (who is, if anything, even more obsessed with these than I am) lives nearby, there really is no good reason we can’t accomplish this.

UPDATE: Success!

I played 12 crayon rail games this year--Eurorails twice, and each of the others once. This goal was met only thanks to a mad sprint at the end of the year after I pointed out to my mom that I had such a goal and was about to fail it. I played 6 crayon rail games in December, finishing up with Empire Builder on the evening of the 31st. Woot!

So last year I set a goal of going to Kevin’s game night monthly, and was making pretty good progress until he stopped having it. Let’s hope that wasn’t a jinx, because this was a useful approach for me and I’m going to try it again. My sense of time is such that if there’s something I’d like to do that happens weekly, but I know I don’t have time for it every week, I’m likely to think about it every week, and then realize at some point that I haven’t actually done it in many months. So my new goal is to make it to L&C's and FTaGN (two local game groups) at least once a month each.

UPDATE: Success/failure.

I made it to L&C's on plenty of occasions, and 10 out of 12 months, so I'm calling that a success.

Haven't been to FTaGN since February, so miserable failure there. The most hideous and ironic part is that this group meets where I work, and a couple times I was actually in the building on game night, but to do work, not play games. Must reevaluate priorities for better luck next year.

I got my own copy of this for Xmas, which was extremely thrilling. Now I really want to play more, but sadly, have already learned that it’s not easy to get this to the table. I’m planning to try, though, so will set a modest goal of getting to the chariot races 4 times this year.

UPDATE: Failure.

Played once at Prezcon, and that was it. Haven't played with my own new set yet at all. soblue

I'm finding that the games I want to play most but have the hardest time getting to the table lately are what I think of as the mid-length games--games that are longer than the average 2-hours-or-less Eurogame, but not as long as the great epic games (Dune, Civilization, Titan, that sort of thing). These 3-to-5ish-hour games are long enough that people balk at them on your average game night, but not long enough that people think of having a special event to play them. Both of those generalizations are not entirely true at all (counterexamples from recent experience are coming to mind as I write this), but true enough that it's a source of frustration and annoyance.

This year I’d like to try something new; that is, to branch out into a new gaming circle or opportunity. This might be a new con that I haven’t gone to before. It might be playing with a new group. Or it might be a gameday or other event that’s new to me.

UPDATE: Success.

There has been an amazing blossoming of game stores in my area lately (jealous much?), and I've finally made it to game night at two of the newer ones, Game Theory in Raleigh and Gamer's Armory in Cary.

Really wanted to go to Atlanta Game Fest last May, but the stars didn't align.

In theory, my Dune group plays quarterly, but in practice one thing or another comes up, and we don’t always get a game organized that often. Actually, looking back, I see that we played 4 games in 2006 and 2008, and 2 in 2007 and 2009. I have no idea why even-numbered years are lucky for us, but let’s hope the pattern holds. My goal for 2010 is four games of Dune, and hopefully to get the first one in before Prezcon.

UPDATE: Success, approximately.

OK, technically not exactly success, because we only played three times. We did manage to get the first game in before Prezcon, but then didn't play again till August. I was moving house last summer, though, so it wasn't the best time. But three games, plus four new players, equals a Dune year I'll chalk up as largely a success.

Little by little I’m getting to try the great epic games. In 2009, it was Civilization. I don’t know what it may be in 2010, but my goal is to play at least one of these that’s new to me.

UPDATE: Failure.

Alas, the opportunity just never arose. soblue

Back in 2008, I realized a long-cherished dream of finally getting to play this. Since then, the good news is that several of my friends and relatives have caught the obsession, but the bad news that we’ve only managed to play a handful of times. I really want to play more often so that we’ll start to do so more competently. My ideal would be a regular monthly game, and we talked about that at one point, but it doesn’t look as though that will come to pass due to various real-life obstacles. So I’m going to set a goal of 6 games this year, and try to make it happen as often as possible. My further goal is to put together an easy-to-understand set of rules for our group to use.

UPDATE: Dismal failure.

This project just totally failed to get off the ground. Hopefully it will do so next year. I have the essential element: the correct number of players and their enthusiasm for playing. First step is to figure out once and for all whether we should switch to a different style of Mahjong than what we learned on, which is Hong Kong Old Style (if you have an opinion, please comment!).

Deduction games are one of my favorite types of game, and there seem to be quite a lot of them that I haven’t tried. My goal this year is to play at least one new-to-me deduction game.

UPDATE: An abundance of success!

I played the following new-to-me deduction games this year:
Inkognito
Jotto
Mutton
Mystery Express
Nuns on the Run
Telepathy

I enjoyed all of these. Mystery Express is the only one I own (so far), and Telepathy is the one I've played the most.

And here I must give credit to one of my similarly deduction-loving gaming buddies,

It seems that we just don’t play enough Roborally. So I’m setting a goal for this year of 50 games. I’ve played 7 times in January, and plan to spend several days at Prezcon playing Roborally pretty much 24/7, so I think this target is within reach.

UPDATE: Tragic failure.

Played a decent 17 times at Prezcon, but then things went downhill. Ended with 40 games of Roborally for the year, fewer than last year. soblue
