In the Nineties Schmidt Spiele published a series of games called "Bestseller Autoren Spiele". The series contained games by reputated authors as Wolfgang Kramer, Sid Sackson, Alex Randolph or Reinhold Wittig. Some of the titles were published before with Acquire being the most remarkable but the majority of them weren't big successes.

I had the idea for this list when I finally played Nizza after many years of owning it which has an average of 4.8. It's definitely nothing great and not a gamer's game but surprisingly, it was ok and I can see a place for it in my collection. Might there be some other enjoyable games in this series?

As the list was called Bestseller games I list them in order of owners starting with the least succesful.

If you're interested in obscure game series I did a similar geeklist before: Mattel German game series

Some comments:
"Well, if you want to prove that putting out a game by a big name in the designer world, under a pretentious "Best-selling Designer Games" label, does not mean it is actually worth playing, than Schmidt hit a home-run. [....]" - [this comment by user BigWoo is much longer but the quote describes many games of this series quite well]

"This got a lot of play when my son was 3 - 5 years old. So much that the board fell apart and the cards were horribly bent. Finally, I tossed the game and kept the little gems to be reused in other games." [emonika]

Some comments:
"More of a children's game - and on that level I might rate it a 7 or so. It's got some interesting mechanisms and absolutely beautiful production value. It's definitely the type of game that wouldn't go over well with those that like deeper games, but taken in a light-hearted and fun spirit, there's more than enough game here for a casual group to have a really good time with. It's also a great game for parents to play with their kids, as the older folks would actually enjoy it and not want to gouge their eyes out when the kids request it for the tenth time in a month!" Some comments:
"The mechanism is very cool... an interesting idea. Unfortunately, the end game totally breaks down. There's got to be a way to fix it, I just haven't figured it out yet.
OK, that's what I wrote a couple of years ago... since then, I've come to believe that the problem with the game is the number of players. It works GREAT with 2-3 players, maybe 4 - but it collapses with 5-6 players.
My rating (raised from an initial 4) is for 2-3 players." [gamemark]

"One of the few games I've ever seen someone so annoyed by as to walk away from the game. " [huber]

Some comments:
"One of the few 3-person game with a good balance, because the weakest player does not have to decide, whom of the other 2 players he will help to win!" [moxtaveto]

"A dated game that is reflective of its time, but still has some merit. A game that is exclusively designed for three, Abilene requires a little bit of memory to remember what cows are good and which are bad. The die-roll for moving the cowboys is a little crappy, but the limited space on the board means that you can travel to the next area fairly readily." [skelebone]

"While I wouldn't want to play this very often, I actually kind of had fun playing this one. There's nothing really all that exciting here, but it's fun enough wrangling other cowboys' cattle and shooting other cowboys when they try to wrangle your cattle. The sick cattle mechanism also adds a layer of stupid fun to the game. Overall, a charming old design, but definitely shows its age." [chaddyboy_2000]

Some comments:
"Surprisingly low ratings here! This is a very good abstract game. No luck at all. And even from a bad position you can come back with a surprise victory. This is really the game for sneaky, sudden, unexpected wins!" [Michiel]

"A surprisingly deep and elegant game for Rudi Hoffmann. Ultimately, for me, it suffers from being strictly an abstract game. Still though, I am quite surprised that this game didn't catch on in the abstract crowd. Lots of things to keep track of here. Expect the person that can assess and proccess large quantities of information to kick the crap out of you everytime. Clearly a game that you can excel in.
Nonetheless, there is a bit of humiliation that can be had when the neutral player can make more points than you do (but, the same can be said for Clans, which I love)." [sisterray]

Some comments:
"The perfect negotiation game." [JasonMatthews]
"For a 60 minute game, I'm The Boss packs in quite a lot of haggling, negotiation, and plain old villainy. Making the deals seems sort of flighty and arbitrary at first but when it comes together, it's very satisfying. Judicious use of "take that" style cards gives them game a spark missing from some negotiation games. The play length is perfect, but the variable ending is kind of a let-down." [crackedlcd81]
"Really disliked some of the mechanics in this game. Can be very cut throat and if a player is holding 'all the cards' they can punish you.
Happy to math trade this one." [Neil Thomson]

Commenting this is like carrying owls to Athens. The one game in this series that really deserves the bestseller title with Kohle, Kies & Knete being a distant second.
