Saturday the 6th saw a practice session for our forthcoming campaign game of the Battle for Normandy. Given the size, complexity, and length of the campaign game, we thought running through June 6th once in advance would ease our way into the game. With any new game, there are things you just don't do right the first time. Having run the invasion sequence and played a regular turn, the real campaign start on February 13th should be a lot smoother.

I understand that Le Havre has become the standard game on Wednesday nights. Really, I have to play this more often. Especially since it's my copy being played at the club.

Something was being played with an A&A Anniversary Edition, though it didn't appear to be a standard A&A game. Some comment was made about making it more Risk-like.

The main event was the beginning of our campaign game of BfN. We're working with five players to start with, three Allied and two German, though the third Allied player had relatively little to do. Those of us who had done the run-through last week took the point in the invasion turns, one for the Americans and one for the British. We'll slot the third player in to take over Omaha and perhaps Gold, though I anticipate that longer-term there'll be a Cotentin American, a bocage front American and a Brit.

Play certainly went much smoother this time, cutting about two hours off the time taken in the invasion turns. The American airborne drops went middling-well, with about seven losses due to swamp and German fire, only one to landing on a German unit, and none lost in the sea. Omaha beach backed-up pretty badly, taking until the third landing phase to clear most of the strongpoints. Utah went smoothly. Gold and Sword went reasonably smoothly, with the Canadians taking more losses but clearing the beach faster. Sword still seems hard to clear and difficult to make progress on. The British airborne went smoothly, grabbing the Orne bridge and reinforcing it quickly.

We played through the June 6 PM turn and will continue next week.

Phil Ullrich and Jeff Sutton were setting up a three-player 40K scenario. Participating armies were Space Marines, Chaos Marines and the Sisters of Battle. It was a relatively fast-playing battle and apparently the Chaos Marines got the short end of the stick.

We began again with the June 7th Night turn, which took a bit of time to work through as a first pass. We wound up with light showers as the weather, which restricted air and naval assets. Given the limited number of air points, it was hard to decide what to do. We wound up allocating 20 points each to maps D and E for interdiction, 10 points to Armed Recon, and 5 points to Ground Support. It worked out fine, but we'll have to remember to not allocate round numbers to interdiction zones to take advantage of breaks on the table.

Starting from the east, the 6th Airborne sector continued relatively quietly but with a good grasp on the space beyond the Orne. The commandos are being fed in, now that there's unrestricted access from Sword and an armoured brigade is also on hand. The Germans seem to be massing a bit too much infantry up right on the coast line, so we'll see about that. 3d British Division was able to make limited progress, mostly landing the left-overs from the invasion and setting up to push directly on Caen. 3d Canadian also made limited progress towards Caen, with a pair of attacks by 8th Brigade achieving NE results. 50th Division was able to reorient towards Bayeux successfully and make a strong push to arrive at the outskirts. This attracted 12th SS so actually taking Bayeux may be an issue. However, the lack of 12th SS elsewhere may prove useful.

The Omaha beachhead finally cleaned up its immediate vicinity and started pushing 1st Division towards the area just west of Bayeux and the 29th headed more-or-less towards Carentan. 82d and 101st tried to maintain defensive positions around their drop areas but suffered for it, while 4th Division finished arriving and began pushing up the coast road. With the arrival of further reinforcements during the 8th, both beachheads should be able to start making real progress. There's relatively little in front of the Omaha area in particular.

We shall see what daylight on the 8th brings in two weeks.

Following Agricola, a blend of players from that and new arrivals started a large free-for-all using the World at War maps and some variant on Axis & Allies rules. It was still going strong when I left around 8:30 p.m.

Last week's 40K game spawned another one on the 27th featuring Eldar versus Tyrannids. Frequent references were made to the Somme as the Tyrannids waded across the board towards a few Eldar.

The rest of us started off with a learning game of RftG. Personally, I think Dan ended the game too early for his strategy to work. But it may simply have been a case of not coming up with the proper 6-point technology card to complement his military pursuits.

A slightly different group of four turned to a game of St Pete's. While there are strategies to follow in St Pete's, I think it's more a matter of money management, with a modicum of dependence on initial seating order. Being first or second in the nobles early on and getting a good noble seemingly can be very helpful. In this game, the observatories came out late, on the 4th turn and the penultimate turn, while the Debtor's Prison came out on the last turn.

We lost one person and moved on to Revolution. Letting one person get the Printer all the time can be dangerous. Overall, I think the game works better as a four-player,as with three there's often much less competition for particular areas.
