Have you ever finished an attrocious game, picked up the box, cried to the heavens, and broke it in twain? How about maybe just looked at the blurb or tagline on the front, or read the text on the back and been incredulous that anyone could describe it with those words?

Addictive
Here's the deal (and it's true with most of the other phrases as well)- if you have to tell us a game is "XYZ", you're probably doing it because the game won't do the job on it's own, and needs your subliminal precursor to try and help it along.

Magic: The Gathering can be addictive, you can be drawn to buy more and more packs. Some video games are addictive, they've got a fast reward schedule or encourage quick replay. Most games that i've seen that said "addictive" on the box (like banemaster here... "It's wicked! - fast, vicious, and seriously addictive.") were snore-fests.

Strategic
There are too many of these to name. Strategy being a long-term plan, tactics being making the best decision for the immediate situation (often employed to further the over-arching strategy). A trivia game is NEITHER of these things. This is one of the ones that came up when I searched for "Strategy Game" on Amazon, along with other hugely inappropriate results like "The Game of Life" and various other pure-dice games.

Epic
And even games I like do it- Caledea is a very decent game, but it is more about tactics than strategy, and neither the scale nor the length are things I would deem "epic". Yet the tagline is "The Epic Strategy Game"

Sweeping the Nation!
or, similarly, "Sweeping America".

I saw an ad for this on BGG, that's what inspired this list. The game itself looks ok, it appears to be a derivative of spades with some special cards (9 special cards added to a normal deck of cards with the suits changed thematically). Probably an entirely acceptable game. Perhaps even strategic, in spite of its tagline saying so. But i set the bar for "sweeping the nation" at, y'know, SOMEBODY having heard of it before. Let's go with 1% of the nation. If you've got 1% recognizability, I'll accept your nation-janitoring status.

There are many games with ads referring to the "easiness" of checkers/draughts and the "complexity" of Chess. Neither is true most of the time, but Saikoro even tops this with a third one: The "elegance" of GO (and the "speed" of Draughts).
Well, with an average weight of 1.6 you better NOT believe the Chess / Go reference.

unique
is what they call this clone of Dog. They also claim that "it can be called without exaggeration a small revolution in the field of tactical games ... strategic" while it is neither. All in all an advertisment that nearly guarantees a bad fun/price ratio.

Sometimes, however, it's entirely true.

Read the last sentence in the section under "Adventure is reborn." You'll see "Finally, the best of what you love about RPGs, Strategic War Games and CCGs has been tediously rolled into one fantastic game!"

I always am afraid of games that subtitle themselves "The Board Game." I'm not sure what I'd call these things, but "board game" isn't one of them.

Destined Classic

This is immediately what came to mind when I read this geeklist title. Trillon's box cover is guilty of several violations...

"... so unique it's patented!"

"... a game unlike any you have seen or played before" (see below)

"... mind boggling"

... but I think the phrase that is the most pompous in its hype is "A destined classic, its brilliant design will outlast the test of time."

Destined classic (coupled with "will outlast the test of time") suggests that this game is going to one day, thousands of years from now, rank with Chess, Go, Checkers, Backgammon, and Mancala as games universally known and played. What kind of mind does it take to throw a lot of multi-colored cubes into a box, come up with some roll-and-move mechanics to make it resemble a game, and then think to himself, "My God! I've just invented the next Chess! They'll be playing this thousands of years from now!"

Or perhaps "classic" merely implies something like Monopoly that has hung around for several decades and had a trillion themes applied to it. In which case, what twisted mind would throw a lot of multi-colored cubes into a box, come up with some roll-and-move mechanics to make it resemble a game, and then think to himself, "My God, I've just invented the next Monopoly! There'll be NASCAR Trillon, and Star Wars Trillon, and DOG TRILLON! oh my... the royalties... the royalties..."

But the box does have one bit of truth in advertising. It claims that designing the board is half the fun of the game. That's probably true, and probably an understatement. According to Greg Schloesser's review that seemed to be all of the fun.

Unlike

Similar to "unique," the claim that a game is "unlike" anything other game is a load of hype. I find this label attached to games being marketed to potential buyers that are weighing their options between Dog Monopoly and Simpson's Clue - in steps a game like Friendo, giving a third choice that is clearly better because it is "unlike" those other games.
