Whether you agree or not there is a number of people on this site who hate those mass market games most of us grew up with. Be it Monopoly, Clue, Yahtzee, or whatever, they've grown to despise these oldies. And even though these games could be classified as classics to the rest of the world, certain gamers won't touch them with a ten-foot pole.

Unfortunately this has caused a significant bias against any game that bears the same name as these "classics." And, despite a general dislike on BGG for Hasbro's business practices, it seems that they have decided to really put some effort into creating some interesting new ideas with their classic games.

So don't write off these games just because of the name on the box. Because this isn't your father's Monopoly, Clue, Yahtzee, etc., etc., etc.

The way I've been describing this game is "the game that everyone wishes Monopoly was." This card game gives you the same feel as the board game when you collect properties and build up your cash, but it moves at a break-neck pace. Special action cards allow players to swap properties and most cards can be played as either an action or just to build up the cash in your bank.

If you hate Monopoly, don't write off this great filler game just because that name is on the box.

Do you hate the old Yahtzee game because it's really just a solo game disguised as a multi-player game? Well, this game changes all that. In this game you will have the opportunity to steal points from other players, and be faced with tough decisions about whether to gamble and take a risk on some points or take the chips which are a sure thing. It takes the basic game of Yahtzee, but adds an element of interaction that really makes the game fun. Also there is a built-in timer that races this game to it's finish so that the game won't drag too long.

Don't even think about that card-flipping Sorry game, because this doesn't bear any resemblance at all to that. In fact this game is a superb dexterity game that some have called "Poor Man's Crokinole." The game is challenging and fun for players of all ages and even includes 4 different ways of playing!

This game is so far removed from classic Clue that I struggle to even see why it got that name on its box. There isn't any deduction in this game at all. In fact it's a game where you try to score points by arranging secret rendezvous and collecting spy gadgets. And the whole game you're hiding a secret identity of your own that will score you extra points at the end. You can even add extra intrigue by getting text messages during the game that change the gameplay significantly (this is not required to play the game.) All the gadgets in this game make you feel the theme a little more too.

Probably one of the oldest games that will end up on this list. This game came out back in 1991 and it isn't very similar to its namesake. In fact this is a semi-cooperative game where one player is trying to sneak around stealing art while the other players try to track him down. Players take turns being the thief and whoever steals the most art wins. It is a very enjoyable game, and you can often find them in thrift stores nowadays.

Want that same random dice-fest combat that you get from the board game without the time commitment? This is the answer. Countries are pictured on disks and players have to roll specific dice combinations to conquer them. And you can conquer countries held by your opponents as well. It's simple and yet I still get that same feel I have when playing the board game.

Another gem in the express series. This game takes away the random guessing from the classic and allows player to target specific ships. Each ship has special attack abilities and makes for an entertaining and fun game. It's fast, and even has 2 different difficulty levels built in so that young people can play along without using the special abilities and be slowly stepped up to the full game.

Risk is rightly accused of taking too long and requiring too many people. Many of the newer Risk games (e.g., Risk: The Lord of the Rings Trilogy Edition, Risk: Star Wars Original Trilogy Edition) are designed for only 2-3 players/teams and have built in mechanisms for limiting the length of play.

Do you like the deduction in original Clue but simply despise the roll-and-move aspect? Then I have 2 solutions for you. First of all would be Clue Express which gives you the same deduction as Clue, but there is no board to walk around. Again there is a easy game and a slightly deeper "advanced" game so you can scale this one up for young players too.

The second option you'll see in my next entry...

This would be the other option. Players move from one place to another, but not with dice, they use special action cards to get from one location to another. This is a really interesting variant on the Clue system, yet it gets done in almost half the time.

I don't think this one is in print any longer, but you can find a copy here and there. It plays much faster than regular monopoly and actually reminds me most of one of my favorite dice games "Can't Stop!".

Has some BGG detractors, but it's a light "beer and pretzel" game with mechanics novel to most non-gamers. I think some tweaks have been posted to add more strategy to it.

Found this at a thrift store last week, and played it last night a couple of times.

For Hearts players, allows the game to be scaled for 2-8 players instead of 4, plus hand switching, wilds and forced card draws.

For UNO players - some UNO flavor to a game that actually involves strategy and isn't tedious.
