Okay, let's start out with the horror pictures. Ye of weak hearts, leave!

I'm moving to America at some point this year, and so I'm culling my game collection, and trying to reduce the size. This means I'm packing games inside of games. To do that properly, I need to toss the inserts. Here's the Massacre of Inserts 2010. Look, and weep for the dead.

But some games I just couldn't get rid of the inserts. So here's a list of some of the games that had such a good insert that I couldn't get rid of them.

Some games were close - I struggled with a few. But these are the ones that I must keep. Got any GREAT inserts. Add 'em to the list.

This game has some of the best tiles of any game, and they stack so neatly in the plastic insert. I simply couldn't get rid of it - besides, it doesn't free up that much room in the box. Either way, all the pieces fit inside the insert quite well, you can tilt it without too much problem.

I think there's room in this box for some expansion stuff, but it's nice how the boulder and wall pieces snap into place. There is a spot for everything, and it makes setup a bit of a snap. Great components deserve a great insert, and this game has it.

This one is different from the rest. The insert is one of those ho-hum cardboard inserts, but I kept it because of the art on it. The whole box looks like a giant boat, and it's just a nice thematic addition to the game. I like when a publisher goes the extra mile and adds design to the inside of a box.

Another great inset that holds the coins, boats, and other pieces. This game has some of the best components of any game, and I want them to really shine when the box is opened. To think of the boats rattling inside the box just seems wrong.

Colosseum is one of those games that I have a hard time imagining how to pack it up WITHOUT the insert. Days of Wonder does a good job at including a space for every piece, and it just packs up tremendously well. A great game, with a great insert.

Wallenstein absolutely needs the insert, since you use most of it during the game itself to hold the pieces. I like how the "insert" is basically different parts used during the game. Fitting it in is a bit of a puzzle, but it's worth it for this incredible game.

As with many big box games (are there that many?), every expansion fits into a slot here. So you CAN'T get rid of the insert. Now I've found that if the box gets turned upside down (don't ask) it's not too helpful. But for a game in which you use only a few of the expansions each time - this insert is essential.

With the shear amount of plastic pieces, this game has an insert which is both useful and thematic. I couldn't throw this one away - it would be criminal.

This is probably the insert that gets the most oohs and ahs when I bring it out. And it deserves it.

This is one that the insert is extremely useful. All the units are labeled underneath the insert, too, making putting it away very handy.

The only part of it I have issues with is the bin for putting the health markers in, as you are supposed to put the score markers in there, too, and that's kind of a pain when you are trying to find them, but the insert for this one is vital to keeping the units organized

EDIT: This entry is for the Valley Games edition; I don't know if the older versions had such inserts

I actually enjoy this insert! I don't use all those spaces, but the action order inserts are quite nice to check if there is any pieces missing! It's pretty useless for the power tokens tho, I use a baggie for that

Now this is more a case of "Don't throw that cardboard out!", but since it is used in combination with the insert, I guess it is a valid entry:

Look at this insert:

Board Game: Taluva


The tiles fit very nice into their compartements. The bits, packed in baggies into the big compartement.

But there seems to be a problem: Space *above* the insert. That was the space, where the cardboard sheets with the tiles had been stored for shipping.

Now I almost made the mistake to throw away these cardboard sheets after punching out the tiles. Then I noticed that the insert now had this empty space above, so the tiles would fall out when turning or moving the box. Well, I thought there is another badly designed insert... To help the problem maybe I should keep the punched cardboard and put it on top. But that didn't look so good and you would always have to remove it and put it back...

Then suddenly it occured to me: Maybe the punched cardboard sheets can be put *under* the insert... I tried and it was a perfect fit. This made the insert raise right up flush to the box top and now everything will stay nicely in place. The shape of the sheets even safely supported the compartements from below.

So, sorry for you if you have thrown away those empty cardboard sheets from this game. These actually had a useful function together with the insert.

I'm not sure if this qualifies as a complete insert, but this game has trays for units. You can even break it up and give each player their own supply.

I didn't care for this game at all. I think the insert, however, is wonderful. The little coins sit nicely in the upside down pyramid, and there's a slot where the tiles get put back in as they're used.

The insert was more impressive than the game.

One of the first new games I bought after discovering this site was Betrayal at House on the Hill. I thought it was pretty nice. Then I bought Memoir and looked at the thick cardboard and little plastic men and the box insert that held everything so sweetly, and I was in absolute awe. I just sat there stroking the game saying "oh wow, this is so gorgeous". Days Of Wonder is a class act.
