Ever since Fonzie jumped over a swimming pool of sharks in an episode of Happy Days,(Which showed that the series had run it's course and should call it quits.) The term "Jump the Shark" has been used to described anything that is running thin in creativity and value. There are games and gaming systems that continue to release new editions and expansions which don't seem to add much to the gaming world.

The original game let you recreate WW2 with a simple game system that was a step above Risk while not adding the complexity of traditional boardgames. Now they have an edition for several theaters of the war. I wonder if many gamers would be heartbroken if the didn't have any more editions hit the market.

The classic family game of Risk holds memories of my college years and family holiday marathons. I haven't really been impressed by any new editions.

This series is like kudzu. I never cared for the first edition, I don't understand who is buying the horde of others the Steve Jackson Games produces. This cute joke is running thin.

The great thing about the Command and Color series was it's simplicity and playability. Even with the extra expansions for Memoir 44, the games went fast and were exciting. The recent expansion for this game make it more confusing and for no apparent reason. Maybe this is as far as the game should go.

World in Flames: Great, great series.... However somewhere along the line (for me anyway) it got to be too.... big.

Cruisers in Flames added 400 counters to an already immense game. Do we really need each light and heavy cruiser in a strategic game?

After mod they also released:

Convoys in Flames (okay, this was at the same time)
Factories in Flames
Commandoes in Flames

.... and I heard they are working on a module to integrate WiF with ASL so you can fight the whole war at the tactical level. Squads in Flames or some such.

Actually, as I am typing this list, I might have to back it up a bit to say they jumped the shark with Superheroes, er, um, Leaders in Flames in '98.

I tend to be OCD with my gaming stuff try to get the complete set. For example, I have every issue of Strategy and Tactics since 1973, as well as all the Command, Counterattack and Against the Odds issues. I own every bit of Heroscape (and then some). Ditto expansions for LOTR, Settlers, and the WWII: ETO lineage. However, somewhere along the line WiF broke my driving need to be.....complete. That is really saying something.

I find it hard to explain why, but the Air Pack's mere existence has tainted my appreciation for Memoir '44. Though there are things I like about the Air Pack, I think it's the way the expansion tries to add a pretty useless layer of complexity while tying all the preceding expansions (which I did own) together, making everything seemingly dependent on everything else.

This game was trumpeted as being so replayable and variable right out of the box, with tons of cards, of which only a handful was used in any single game. If that were the case, there wouldn't be a need for ANY expansions.

A new expansion comming in spring 2010 with new mechanics and another 45-50 cards. How much becomes too much of a good thing?

With all the expansions, the deck will be twice the size as what comes in the original box!

Is this to be a case of over-expansion?

I hope not!

Dueltrack: A Car Wars Deluxe Supplement, which added rules for metal armor and gas engines to Car Wars, was merely the ramp.

This set was the one that clearly took the game over the edge.

Car Wars Tanks was just overkill.

Alhambra's one of my favorite games, despite knowing more complex games which reward more strategy.

I don't think it jumped the shark with any of the first four expansions, which despite being overpriced, were very well thought out expansions (for the most part). It didn't jump the shark with The Gardens of the Alhambra or Alhambra: The Dice Game. No, it's jumping the shark this year with New York, which is basically Alhambra set in 1920s New York. Funny, I don't recall the US having four different currencies in the 20th century. And then there's Alhambra: The Card Game coming out this year. What's different about Alhambra the card game? As far as I can tell--nothing--there's just no walls. The tiles were changed to cards.

So now you can play Alhambra as Alhambra: The Card Game. But you could always do that if you chose to ignore the walls.

I am wary of expansions for euro games - they don't seem to add to the strategy or fix problems with the base game (as FFG expansions seem to do). Instead they just ratchet up the game time, often doubling the original duration.

La Isla Bohnita is a wretched expansion (apart from the extra beans) that does away with trading and becomes a card grab. There's nothing rewarding about having beans stolen from your field compared to a tough negotiation. And it takes 90 mins to play.

I'm happy with the original Bohnanza.
