Play the same game enough times and something will go wrong. Something that can punch holes in your wonderful strategy. Make you wonder why it had to happen this time.

But in certain games the same thing will go wrong every time you play them. This list is dedicated to the games that hate you. The games where the same thing goes wrong every time you play it.

At some stage in every game you ever play of Power Grid, your perfect plan for the turn will not be possible, because you are 1 Elektro short.

I put 1829 in to represent every 18XX game as it was the first.

In every game you will spot the perfect place to lay a piece of track that will give you the opportunity for a nearly perfect network. It will earn you lots of money and quite possibly win the game. And then you will find that every piece of track that would fit there is already in the game.

This might not apply to everyone, but when I play this with my games group we play where you play bets face down and you are not allowed to look at them after placing them.

At least once during the three races you will forget which one is your dummy bet.

At least once every game you will find you are going too fast. You will discard one dice and re-roll all the others hoping for 1's you will of course roll all 3's.

I enjoy Tigris & Euphrates. Apparently it enjoys taunting me. I tend to only ever win the conflicts that I have an overwhelming chance of winning. But whenever I decide to initiate a conflict that's going to require a little bit of luck - it seems never to be on my side. My opponent always seems to have exactly the number of hidden tiles they need to defeat my attack.

I gotta win some of them, don't I? Tigris & Euphrates disagrees.

But I still like it.

I love this game, but invariably every time - I will get robbed or assassinated for most of the game. Why can't I ever seem to choose the character that no one will suspect that I have?

Everyone gets upset when I play the warlord, and destroy their cities -- but I usually have to play it just to try to stay in the game. And typically I end the game with 4-5 city districts. (it takes 8 to win)

Oh well, I am a glutton for punishment so I always come back for more

This game does not want me to win. I change my strategy, hoping to trick it (and my opponent, of course). That doesn't work. I change my lay-out. I bring in extra over here, over there, I sit and wait. I throw it all in and surround. No matter, those Panzers show up and all is lost. I think I won one time. The game must have been having a bad day, either that or I gave my husband some bad chicken.

Every time you move, your opponent has a wire.

Every time you need a fire card, you are 1 FP short.

Every time you need to rally, you spend half a deck discarding.

Every time you you don't need a particular card, you draw that card. Every time you do, you don't

It is still my favorite wargame!

I think i can adopt John´s statement about Power Grid...
John Bandettini wrote:

...nearly one-to-one.

At some stage in every game you ever play of St.Petersburg, your perfect plan for the turn will not be possible, because you are 1 Rubel short.

Nevertheless, it is a brilliant game. Perhaps, exactly because of the forementioned fact? ninja

Once every game you will see that the auction round (that you intended to pass in) is going to be had quite cheaply. You shout 'All in!' and end up buying a building for too much that you can't use.

I play an Event card, like "Rats", which removes all stored food when it's revealed. I cackle inwardly at the coming devastation my friends will face.

4 to 8 rounds later, I smile at my skillfull accumulation of food preparing to increase my population next turn, and then glance down at the Current Events stack with only one card left. My card!!! blush

I then proceed to make as many people as possible and still end up losing 4 food on the next turn when "Rats" is revealed.

You will never get the last tile you need.

I've even developed a 6th sense for when my opponent is going to draw the exact tile I need. And it seems to be a universal principle. It happens 100% of the time for me, to the point where on two consecutive turns, the same guy pulled out the same tile twice in a row, right before me. He used both to make his girlfriend win.

The good news is, it never happens to just me. It's equal opportunity. I almost never see someone get the exact tile they need to win in the last 5 rounds, no matter how many copies of that tile are still in the bag. Someone else will always get them. All of them.

Just when you're playing Moloch... about second or third turn.... what do you draw? The Clown, Airstrike, and Move. Great. Just wonderful. Hats off to you Moloch. Way to give the exact opposite of what I need.

So rule of thumb... when playing Moloch, you will draw important things first.

But seriously, this has happened 3 times. I mean really... how about I draw it at a useful time for once Like when Borgo or Outpost has a nice little bunker around their outpost.... NAH, never happen. shake

The die. That damned reinforcement die. It will never help you when you really need it.

Half of the sides have at least one pip on them. Statistics tell me that the die has an expected value of one. However, when your need is the greatest, that die has an expected value of "#%$& You!"
