My partner (a non gamer) is buying a present for an old uni friend (who is in a couple and have a four year old and a two year old).

I have discussed games with him quite often, about the fact he 'used' to roleplay, and he used to be a proper geek :-). His wife loves games (like Cranium) but i don't believe they have any decent boardgames. So i suggested that my partner buys them (as part of their present) a low price (20 quid) card or boardgame, that the two of them can play, that the four year old can sit and watch or try to understand.

So, it has to be out now as we are seeing them this saturday, and my partner would have to go in and buy it from Orc's Nest in London (she works around the corner). It has to be interesting to a past geek, and to his wife who loves games, and it would be nice if it was bright and cheerful, so no death etc.

Obviously i'm hoping to get them into games so that when they come down to stay they'll convince my partner to play along :-)

Need help here, this isn't an easy one! (And perhaps i'm too much of a geek to think of the right games!)

I just love this game now, play it in lunchtime (real version), and after work (online). nice and bright, but i am a little concerned by the small pieces mising with kids. Also a good 2 player game, and if they like it they can get the expansions.

I know some people love and some people hate this. He'd like the RPG references, but i fear she wouldn't get it. Also is it at all grusome? (I'm sure the 4 year old would like the comedy)

You want something that adults and children can both enjoy. Here's your game.

If it's just for the adults, go with Ticket to Ride. It'll hook them!

This is a great game for kids and will keep parents interested as well. The illustrations are simply adorable.

The 4-year-old can probably play it soon. Great family game. Also consider Frank's Zoo.

Blokus. Its pieces and board are made of plastic, perfect for those frequent spills. The rules are simple to explain. Plus kids love to manipulate those pieces.

I have found that the game is still very enjoyable if not everyone plays by the same rules (i.e. the two year old can easily place the pieces, but they may not be legal plays, but thats okay).

Also know as Chicken Cha Cha Cha or something like that.

This is one of the finest Childrens games ever. I have a 7 and 5 year old and whilst my 7 year old has outgrown it and has moved on to more complex games my 5 year old still loves it.

The great thing about this game is that very young children can beat adults without the adults having to play stupid. I believe that it's something to do with a child's mind not yet being cluttered up.

It plays very quick and is easy for a child to understand (my 5 year old was 4 when she started playing this)

Midnight Party (aka Ghost Party) is one we play - we've two kids aged 5 and 3. They both enjoy moving the pieces to try to escape the ghost and it's good practice for counting spaces. They also find it hilarious when they manage to gobble up mummy's or daddy's pieces! The only thing we don't bother with is adding up the scores at the end - we just count how many have been captured to see who has won.

I've got a six and a four year old and they both enjoy this. The scoring counters are cute and encourage simple maths and no reading is needed. I picked mine up this year in York so you've got a chance of finding it in London.

Galloping pigs is good too if you can find it.

Probably too young for a 2-year-old, but a great game for the 4-year-old.

Out of print (see also "Escape from Atlantis"), but a great game for little kids. My 5-year-old gets it no problem. Plus, there's lots of strategy to discover.

We recently acquired Kleine Fische, a fairly straightforward 'Can't Stop' type game, but good fun, and it has prooved to be a real hit with the two boys (now aged 6 and 4). They frequently request to play it and have even started playing it just with each other (on one occasion instead of watching a video).
Highly recommended!
