I've been loving geekspeak so far, and I particularly like the "hook," that is, the series of questions about favorite games that Derk and Aldie ask their guests at the end of each show. Since I'm in no danger of being invited to be next week's guest, I figured I'd give my own answers to these questions in a geeklist. There were a lot of tough decisions here, and I'm sure that if I made this list at another time at least half of these answers would be different. I've taken a little liberty with some of hte questions, since I think that the six-or-more category lumps too many games together. Anyway, here are my answers.

Two players: Lost Cities. I've hundreds of hands of this game, and have never gotten tired of it. The decisions remain interesting, but not so interesting that the game ever drags.

Three players: Einfach Genial. I actually like this game with any number of players--two, three and four, but the competition for a place in the list was least fierce for Einfach Genial. Nonetheless, I wrote up an entire paragraph on Zendo before I decided to give the slot to Einfach Genial. Genial is just an incredibly elegant game, and well balanced with any number of players. And when it comes down to it, while I may enjoy Zendo as much or more than Genial, Zendo is less a game than a semi-competitive puzzle.

Four players: Taj Mahal. OK, this could have gone any one of a number of ways. Many of my favorite games are exclusively for four, especially Tichu, which probably really deserves ths spot, but I figure that Tichu gets so many favorites in people's four player category that I should give the spot to another deserving game in my list. And if it isn't going to be Tichu, I think it has to be Taj Mahal, which really hits its stride with four. I like the game with any number, but with three, the connections on the board become disproportionally important, while with five, it is the elephants which dominate. The balance is nearly perfect with four.

Five players: Ticket to Ride. I don't know why this game gets so little respect among gamers. Yes, it is a great introductory game, but when played among good gamers, it is still a whole lot of fun. This list, incidentally, doesn't mean I don't like the heavier games too, but I feel that it is hard to call a game that rarely hits the table a favorite in any category. And while I also love games like Age of Steam and other longer games, the ones I have the most fun with are often the ligher ones.

Six players: Showmanager. This is my own category here, since I think there are many good games competing for the "exactly six" category. It was a close call between Showmanger and Liar's Dice for this one,and I could have gone either way, but lately I've been having a lot of fun with Showmanager. Sure, there is a huge amount of luck here, but it feels like you have enough control to make the game interesting, and the actual play is just incredibly fun, I think.

Seven or more (serious games): Poker. Sure, it's a fad right now, but that doesn't mean it isn't a fantstic game. Poker works with just about any number, but I enjoy it most with a nice-sized group of players--maybe 8 or 9. I'm not always so great at it, but I'm happy to lose low stakes in order to play this game.

Party game: Why Did the Chicken...? This game shot to the top of my list of party games the first time I played it, and has remained there ever since. This is the funniest game I've ever played, the funniest activity I've ever participated in. I can't recommend it highly enough.

All time top five: Number 1: I never claimed to be consistent, so I see no reason why my top game can't be one that didn't win its category for number of players. I've played well over 1000 hands of Tichu, many of them online, many in person, and I always love it. I haven't played much lately, but I'm sure I'll go back to playing plenty of Tichu again sooner or later.

Number 2: Lost Cities. (geeklist won't let me list a game twice).

Number 3: Liar's Dice (Call My Bluff). Another one I haven't played much lately, but it definitely deserves a place in my top 5 of all time. I consider this game to be the best opener ever I know.

Number 4: Titan. This is a bit of a cheat, since I rarely get to play this one. But I love it so much when I do so that I think it deserves be to somewhere on this list. Also, I felt that my top five needed to have a game that demonstated that I actually enjoy the heavy board games sometime--it could have been any one of a number of games: Princes of Florence, Through the Desert, Age of Steam, among others, but this is the one that I have the most fun with. Well, maybe Age of Steam. Picking favorites is tough--in fact, I originally wrote the above paragraph in reference to Age of Steam, but, on reflection, decided that I enjoy Titan more (with two or three players only).

Number 5: Why Did the Chicken...? Light party games don't always seem to get the respect they deserve. This one is fantastic. What are you waiting for? Go buy it!

Looking forward to: Number 1: Antiquity. My weakness for buying huge overpriced complex games would be more understandable if I also had a weakness for PLAYING such games. But I read the rules for this one, and it really sounds like a whole lot of fun to me.

Number 3: Railroad Dice: Germany. I was very impressed with Railroad Dice. I thought it was one of the most original games I'd played in a while. But it also had some problems--its never been quite as fun as I think it ought to be, and the game seems to outstay its welcome a bit as well. I was thinking of working on some house rules, something I NEVER do, but I hope that the new rules in the Germany version will solve some of the problems of the original game.
