Granted, Monkey Auto Races is a fine game. And as another current GeekList suggests, it could be the only game you'll ever need in your collection. But instead of dictating to you, let me ask which one game you'd choose if you were determined to limit your collection to just a single game.

Yeah, I know--you'll change your mind tomorrow. And even today your mind rebels against the limitation. But just for fun, take a minute to think about it. Then add your one-game "collection" to this list.

And don't leave us guessing. Jot down a reason or two why you picked that game (or write a short essay about if you like).

I'm surprised myself. This is a new game to me, and I've so far played it only once, solo. But I own all the expansions.

The thing is, my one solo game assures me that this is a challenging and sufficiently interesting game; that it's scalable for various numbers of players; that it has nice-looking components; that there's enough of a theme to capture my imagination; and that at my rate of game playing and learning, the expansions will surely keep me happily busy for the rest of my life. It lacks competition (except with the Sauron expansion or other variants), but I'm fine with that.

If I pared my collection down to just this one game, I'd have a game I can enjoy by myself or with my wife, and one that'd be easy enough to get friends or relatives to play when they come over. To me, it's a game with a fair measure of all the little things that go into making a board game great.

(Of course, by tomorrow I'll change my pick. But for now, this is it.)

1) its a zombie game , and its harder to find people who WON"T play a zombie game (even if they have never played it before ) than it is to find players who WILL jump in and play any OTHER game , even if they HAVE played it before .

2) its simple

3) its a free PNP ......... that i have spent a couple hundred dollars on to buyt more figs , scenery , laminated maps , etc..........

4) its a zombie game !!!!!!!!!

After taking the liberty of tossing the extra 20 aliens, Rewards deck, and pieces for the 6th player from Cosmic Incursion into the base game's box, I have to pick Cosmic.

I've only ever had an uproariously good time with this game, and with all the variety of 70 aliens, the option of playing with hidden and/or multiple powers, Technology, having shorter games by playing with just 4 planets each...it could well last my lifetime without getting stale.

Picking War of the Ring (First Edition) was awfully tempting, especially since I'm in the minority who enjoys the 3 and 4 player game experience almost as much as the default 2 player game--but it just narrowly loses out to Cosmic Encounter.

Infinitely replayable with a variety of formats, Magic clearly takes this position for me. I can play any number of Constructed versions, or pool a bunch of cards together and do a draft (normal, Rochester, Winston). I can make an EDH deck for wacky multiplayer or run an Emperor game for teams. It's my go-to game, and gets orders of magnitude more play than all my other games combined.

So yeah, Magic.

Give me this game, and 3-6 other players who enjoy it, and I'm happy. Forever.

I'd miss a bunch of other games, but when it comes down to it, this is my game. I started playing about 13 years ago, and only played it for years. Now that I'm playing other games as well, I would still take this game.

Replayability? Changes with every person you add in.
Depth? It's as deep as the people you play with.

Well, if I had to have one game and one game only it would have to:

Be accessible to a variety of gamers.
Be scaleable from 2-4 or 5
Be deep enough to allow many, many replays
Look good sitting on the table and shelf
Be fun
Allow for some handicapping.for newcomers.

Some of my favorites:

Heroscape
Puerto Rico
Totaler Krieg
Twilight Struggle

TS is only 2 player
TK isn't accessible enough
HS just doesn't have the depth

Leaving... Puerto Rico.

My "One Game" is Race for the Galaxy, preferably with the first, second and third (okay, it's not out yet, but I wish they'd hurry up...) expansions.

Race for the Galaxy is fantastically scalable, from solo to six players, meaning that it's suitable for many environments.

The art is fantastic, and the variety and "colour" of the cards makes for interesting narratives of sci-fi expansion.

The game underneath is deep and dense in interesting decisions; you synthesise a new strategy each game, which you may have to re-evaluate depending on goals, new cards, and opponent leeches.

The short length allows you to squeeze in the odd game when you have a spare half hour or less, and simultaneous turns means slower players won't throw out the playtime.

This is a tough call. I can say most of the same things about TtA that Michael says about EU (which I would LOVE to play sometime). This doesn't have solo scenarios, but I have done a lot of solo play on Vassal, and enjoyed it that way with 2, 3 or 4 "players." I find this game to be incredibly re-playable, with lots and lots and lots and lots ... you get the idea ... of potential winning strategies. I actually like the bits and fiddly aspect of this game for some reason. I think it's extremely deep, but not overly long to play considering its depth. I've long suspected that if I could ever actually play a game of Europa Universalis, it would be my favorite game. For now, this is probably it.

I had a hard time deciding if this game or Roads & Boats was my pick. All things being equal, I give this a slight nod, likely because I've played more of it. And the existence of a good Vassal mod is a major plus for any "perfect game" discussion, in my book.

And, if I could be guaranteed a stream of enthusiastic opponents, I'd probably put Up Front here.

Only 1 game is tough... but this is the one that got me into games beyond Monopoly and Risk. It plays great with 2 players, isn't too heavy (I thought about say, Caylus, but that would be a bit too much as an only game), and is very elegant. I could then use it to convince friends to buy different games for their collection of 1.
