As Aldie announced last week, the Geek is about to get 5 new servers "to add some more powerful muscle to the Geek empire". He also said:
I think it's best to have a contest to name these 5 new servers by community vote. So if you have a great idea for 5 new names, then please enter the contest by replying to this thread with the names that you suggest.
We'll have a nomination period that will end at midnight on Pi-Day (3/14).
The top thumb getters will move on to the finals, where we will create an official poll to determine a winner.
Well, the nominations are in and tallied! (23 pages worth!!)
I convinced Aldie that a geeklist tournament modeled after the Annual Geek Madness Tournament would be more fun for the community than just posting a thread with a single poll. Apparently, he thought that meant I was volunteering to undertake the task (j/k - I did actually volunteer).
So, here it is -- the OFFICIAL NEW SERVER NAMING TOURNAMENT!!
Like Brian's Geek Madness Tourney, this will be a head-to-head matchup. There were 810 suggested name combinations that accrued more than 40 thumbs, and they are seeded here according to the number of thumbs received. Each round will be a head-to-head matchup between nominations. The nominated name-combination to receive the most thumbs at the time each round closes will move onto the next round. After three short rounds, we will have a winner, and Aldie can name the expensive pieces of hardware he is about to purchase to make sure we all stay happy.
This would probably be a good time to mention that, even though it'll be fun to give out thumbs to determine the winner, this site does not run itself on the energy produced by the transfer of thumbs and geekgold. These 5 new servers undoubtedly cost bunches of $$ and our support is what gives the BGG crew the ability to make sure we stay happy. So, if you are in a position to help, and are so inclined, I would encourage you (not on behalf of the site, but just as a fellow grateful user) to click on the link in the previous sentence (or at the bottom of every Geek page) and donate.
So without further ado, I present to you the 810 finalists. Vote... Have fun... and encourage all your fellow geeks to do the same...
Round 1 will end at 10:00pm CST on Tuesday, March 16. The 4 winners will move onto the semifinals, which will run until 10:00pm CST on Thursday, March 18. The finals will then run until about 5:00pm CST on Sunday, March 21.
UPDATE: Please vote for the two wild-card additions that were added because I screwed up!
