Hello. My name is Jon and I am a map junkie.

You would have to think that at least 99% of wargames use a map of some sort. They are an essential piece to almost every game that I own. It is often the first thing I will look at in detail once I open a new game. I will get to the rules later. Counters will get a quick glance. But the map.... ohhhh, that will be unfolded with care and examined in detail immediately.

As I mentioned, I am a map lover. Always have been...always will be. I can spend a lot of time pouring over a simple road map of some far off land. Throw in contours, shading and a nice font and I will practically explode.

The same goes for a wargame map. Now, I will admit that a pretty map will turn my head and draw my attention to any game. One of the great benefits of BGG is often being able to see the map of an unfamiliar and up to that point unpurchased game. I good map pushes me to take out my wallet and plunk down hard earned $$. A poor map...well...will elicit the opposite response. I am not ashamed to admit it.

What are the characteristics of a good map for me? Pretty simple really. In fact, "pretty" and "simple" sum things up nicely:

1) Aesthetic beauty. Both in total and in detail. It has to be a looker. Fonts are important too.

2) Functionality. There has to be substance behind those looks. After all, wargame maps are tools and ambiguity will not enhance the playing experience. Quite the opposite in fact. Since I am colourblind, clarity of colour choice is also important. I suspect this means that fellow gamers may think some of my favourite maps are too garish.

Oddly enough, you would think that on map charts would be an important characteristic, but to be honest they are not vital for me. I am much more interested in the art.

After looking over my collection, I have chosen five maps that are my favourites to date. I have ranked them in order.

Please feel free to add your own favourites and/or comment on my choices. I suspect that maps, like art, are a personal preference.

One last thing. Please forgive me if I have used any of these graphic terms incorrectly. I am not an artist (by a long shot).laugh

This one tops my chart without a doubt.

Aesthetically it is a stunner. The contours of the Apennines really jump out at you as does the juxtaposition of Italy to the rest of the central Mediterranean. The presentation is clear and and each hex detail appears unambiguous. The chosen font softens the overall effect in a pleasing fashion. To me, this is a masterpiece.

I really like the art from COA games in general, especially the BAR and La Bat series. This entry from the latter really caught my eye.

It is a step back from those maps with "realistic" contours in that elevation changes are presented in wedding cake fashion. This may be off putting to some, not to mention the use of shades of yellow. However, to my eye I find that this brings clarity to rather busy and undulating terrain which would otherwise be difficult to decipher. And talk about hills! There are plenty to go around here with more to spare. Woods and towns are depicted in a pleasing manner and the font is beautiful. Full marks from me.

Too be honest, I could have easily selected five maps from these two series for this entire list.

It would not be an easy task to represent the wildly changing terrain of southern Vietnam in a form usable in a wargame, but this game has it. From the jungles in the north to the broad expanse of the Mekong Delta, this is simply a thing of beauty and functionality. In my opinion this was an achievement deserving of the highest praise. Stunning. If you have never seen the entire unfolded map and know someone with a copy, do yourself a favour and ask to take a look at it.

I think part of the appeal of this game for me rests on the aesthetic. The map details are rather muted to be honest. However, put both maps together and I will bet the first word out of your mouth is "Wow". It is a large map to be sure. However, it is also probably the most functional item in my top 5 list. From a player's perspective, you know what you are looking at with one glance(once you get comfortable with the rules). Once the blocks get on the board it really begins to shine. In fact, if this were a list about the best map/unit combos, then NT would be at the top. Interestingly enough, this is the only hard-mounted map on the list and also the only area/point-to-point/graph map.

I really love the maps in the entire East Front series, but picked "North" due to the many rivers, woods and swamps; not to mention the Baltic coastline. It can get a bit busy in crowded places due to those long Russian names, but taken in total it is quite awe inspiring. A feast for the eyes. Functional too.

With 4 full mapsheets based on modern satellite imagery of the area around Monte Cassino, altered according to contemporary battle maps for the location of towns and course of rivers, I would argue that Cassino '44 is one of the finest maps available today.

The hexes are also double-sized, eliminating the need for tall stacks of counters.

Here's a photo of all 4 mapsheets laid out together, with a ruler at the top to establish scale

Both photos are mine. The map was created by the game's designer, David Murray

The regular maps (see below) are nice. And the optional Winter Wonderland maps really give a great feel for fighting in the snow. Guy Riessen has really brought up the level of PG maps. He did Cassino, which is already on the geek list, and Panzer Grenadier: 1940 – The Fall of France, which is probably deserving of its own listing in this geeklist.

The original maps.
