You've seen it. A perfectly fine game ruined by house rules, not even reading the rules, or just the excuse of "it's so much cooler this way"

Very few people seem to know that if you can make a capture, you have to! I've seen so many people give up this game because they allways ended with the pieces locked up.

I read the rules a long time ago. No one believed me when I told them about when an auction is supposed to be held. Everyone seems to know that the free parking 'lotto' is added, but don't want to change it. At the very least I see how this would make for a tight game with enough players, or easily fixed with less cash.

This is the story of a near miss.

Our local game club almost completely soured on Princes of the Renaissance. I'd heard ecstatic reviews of it, but I had not seen that the game is unplayable without the errata. If you don't have the starting rankings for the cities, you can't even get started.

We went through the rules, set up as much as we could, and then spent 15 minutes or so squinting through the rules again, in the hopes that we just missed this critical piece of information. People were so disillusioned that a few never wanted to try it again.

Happily, we did, and now it's one of the most eagerly played games in our collective collection.

Ticket to Ride had this problem, with people playing that once you ran out of cards, the game ended. Made for a very different version of the game we know and love. Seems strange it was such a problem, but enough that the new edition made it much much clearer!

A lot of people play this dead wrng. But even more, i once witnessed a "Houserule" to add more "realism" in that you could stir 2 gears up and down, but had to stop twice as muich in the bends. I love the professional-rules, but this variant sucked!

The first few times we played this, we didn't realize that cards you _got_ in a trade were no longer available for trading; this led to some wacky three-way deals.

Our gaming group completely missed the rule about points only being only counted in ares with or adjacent to the King. Needless to say, we had some pretty high scoring games. (Couldn't figure why the scoring track didn't number higher.)
