Grimwold has has given us one of the most anticipated monthly lists on the Geek in his "New to You" Geeklist. I have read that Geeklist for a while now and recently I have started contributing to that list.

Contributing to that list has changed how I game a little bit. Now I seek out new games to play, instead of relying on the old standbys. I find that thinking about the Geeklist forces me to rate all new games I try and it even causes me to fill in my comments on each of those games, so I can use those comments on the Geeklist.

There is just one little thing that always bothered me a little bit, this one thing that I keep going over in my head almost every month. As I write up my contribution to the Geeklist, I find myself wanting to talk about a game that is NOT new to me. I yearn to let other geeks know about an old favorite we dusted off this month, or we are STILL playing that game that we thought would be stale by now, or a game you played this month in which you feel is underappreciated.

Well this Geeklist changes all of that, with Grimwold's permission, here I introduce the "NOT New to You" Geeklist. I will not presume it will get the play that Grimwold’s does, in fact, unless I get a significant amount of interst, this Geeklist will die, but if there is interest, I will start this up as a monthly recurring list.

Thanks.
-Rob

Based on the feedback so far, I will attempt to make this a recurring list. If you would like notification, please subscribe to the anouncement thread: http://www.geekdo.com/article/4853029

To start this off, I wanted to applaud Descent: The Roade to Legend. I have had this game since it came out but never played it or really given its due. I was kind of intimidated by the long rule book and all of the rules questions. But i recently started a campaign of this and...

I have been having an absolute blast playing this with my son and freinds. I am a big fan of Descent, and Road to Legend ‘fixes’ many of the problems with the base game. The base game suffers from being 5+ hours long and the dungeon crawl can turn into a dungeon creep, and at the end it feels like you are just going through the motions in order to finish. Road to Legend breaks it up in to smaller bite sized chunks and although the campaign can take months over several sessions to complete, each session can be completed in a couple hours. The other big problem with the base game, is the players get mega powerful as the game progress and they get more treasure and skills, while the monsters that spawn all stay the same. In Road to Legend, the monsters can scale in toughness as the campaign progresses making it much more of a challenge.

I have never thought I would enjoy this game as much as I am and I want to let everyone know that this is a type of game that if you think you will like it, I can almost guarantee that you will.

Rapidly rising as one of my favorite games for the way it combines some of my favorite elements – auctions, tech trees, and different paths to victory. The auction is a wonderful exercise in brinksmanship and the tech trees offer different paths that one can pursue. At least for now, these paths seem to be wide open. Perhaps repeated play will show me that there aren’t as many as I think, but I’m sure I’ll enjoy the journey to that point.

This game flows so well for me; I keep saying “it’s like buttah!” when I talk about it. There’s a nice rhythm of having three actions every turn (well, plus the occasional extra one) that keeps the game humming along with planning and turn length. I’m a fan of auctions and the way you pay each other (mostly) instead of the bank means the balance of power swings back and forth in a way that makes bidding decisions extra delicious. I’m a big Princes fan, but this auction tops that one. The tiles up for auction offer plenty of variability in production, special bonuses, and VPs. There’s just so much to choose from and I find it delightful to play.

This one was unplayed for over 2 years! And I really liked this one!

Of course - after opening the box - I had to read over most of the rules again. But it's still a great game!

When we were kids, we got a sjoelbak from Sinterklaas. Well, my dad made it, but we all believed it was from Sinterklaas. Now, years later, we finally took it out again. Dusted it off, polished it and looked up the official rules. And played a whole afternoon! Love it.

Wizard, for me, has had a bit of an awakening for the last couple of months. I bought it a few years ago as it was very similar to a game I played in my youth with a regular deck of cards. Trick taking games has always been a favorite of mine but as we often been 4 players there has been other games more fitting (like Tichu). Recently however, I've gotten to play this little game a few times, even with four, and I it's been great despite me sucking at it.

We mostly used to bid one at the time with the dealer unable to bid the amount equaling the total # of cards. Lately it's been everybody bidding at the same time which I do prefer. With 5 cards it's quite fun to see the expression when a total of 1 (or 10) is bid with 5 cards

Can't really say we dusted this one off as we have played it four times now in the past two or so years. But, this time it was our game group minus one that played (6 player game). Three had not played before and I know one of the guys is fairly new to gaming (less than a year) and had NEVER played anything close to this long.

Everyone loved it!

I was also Egypt and right at the end I had a revolt where I lost all of my 9 cities. All of them. I still had fun.

I don't know what it is about this game but to me it is almost like magic. The feel of the game, the mechanics, the choices, the theme - ALL of it makes this always an awesome experience whether I play with 2, 3, 4, or 5. I was very glad to play it again in March and it did not disappoint. I noticed on LordT's list, BGG Top 50 Statistics : from 01 Mar 10 to 01 Apr 10 that the rating dropped ever so slightly. I say never give up on this one. It is an old (and important) stand-by.

By the way, great idea for an ongoing list. Thanks. I am a very strong supporter of keeping older games alive. If we always mainly go after the new, too many wonderful games fall by the way side. That should never happen!

Since your description in the header makes it sound like we should pick a game we haven't played in awhile, this one gets the nod for March. I really enjoy Thebes and we decided to play it with my parents last week. At this point my Dad is reaching legendary status in the way he is constantly able to draw dirt tiles. He was the first to go digging in one region, and he drew 8 tiles on that dig. The only thing he got from the bag was a specialized knowledge for another color. If not for the automatic 1-pointer at the site he would have received zero points for that dig.

Rikki dominated because she continued to find knowledge in whatever city she happened to be sitting in when here turn came around. By the time she started digging she had tons of knowledge, and her draws from the bags were consistently strong. There was little any of us could do to slow her down. She ended up winning by over 25 points.

It took awhile to play, but man is this a fun game!

My favourite game of all time does not get as much table time as it truly deserves. Always fun, whether I am sucking it up or dominating. We had my brother in law over and this is the game that was requested by his daughters, and I jumped at it. I was in the lower end of the pack for the whole game and managed to pull myself up to joint second in the last couple of turns. Even when languishing in the back I feel I alwas have things I can try and work for or trade for. Building up knights, or building up area on the board, are just a couple of strategies that make this game anything but boring to me.

I hope it consistently hits the table in the next few months.

I had to think about it a little (since I did play my two favorite games this month), but really, the "not-new-to-me" highlight this month was Odin's Ravens.

I freakin' love this game. I never get to play it, so it was nice to break it out at the end of a long afternoon of two player games (included the beloved TS). We went 5 rounds (unusually long), and I pulled a last minute upset. Good times.

One of the first games I bought, Babel came as part of a Kosmos bulk-order with Lost Cities, Dracula, Hera & Zeus, Jambo and Caesar & Cleopatra.

As it happens, all of those are still dearly-loved favourites in my house, but after plenty of plays of each, Babel has risen to the top of the pile. Designed by some hack called Uwe Rosenberg (has anyone heard of anything he's done since? ), it's terrific to-and-fro stuff, and a clear forerunner of San Juan, RftG and their ilk in terms of cards with multiple uses. After ten or so plays, you feel the game is ridiculously unbalanced, but once you go out of your way to try and break it, it bites you in the backside. Once in a while, the order of the temple deck means that you play a terrifically bare-knuckle, gritty game which can last anywhere up to ninety minutes.

Babel is my nominee for most under-rated game on BGG, although the aforementioned Dracula comes close.

I feel a little abashed listing Puerto Rico here, as we all know it is an excellent game. But I had honestly forgotten how excellent. In part thanks to my ambivalence toward the now-ubiquitous Race for the Galaxy, I had mentally shelved this game* for the last 4 months or so. When I discovered that a few of my co-workers were closeted gateway gamers, I was roped into playing it twice in two nights. It was a breath of fresh air: smooth, elegant, and interesting without being overwhelming. That's not to say that it wasn't hard. I lost both games, and wasn't really in the running in either. But it also wasn't a brain-melting, number-crunching, 8-rondel-and-3-auction behemoth of a game, as have drawn me in lately. The only problem now is that my co-workers are anxious to explore my collection, so I may have a hard time getting this back out as often as I'd like.

* I don't own it, so I couldn't literally shelve it. I just stopped asking to play others' copies. I knew you were wondering, though.

Great idea for a list... although I find it much harder to pick a not new to me game than a new one... the pool of games to choose from is wider, and it's hard to know where to draw the line... e.g. if I play a game from my top 10 in a month.. am I obliged to pick that game since it's a great game that's not new to me??

but anyway.. I picked Arkham Horror... since this was originally my #1 favourite game, until Space Alert... and as it happens I hadn't played Arkham since September 09... this month I managed two plays (both 6 or 7 player games).. and my wife played for the first time and quite enjoyed it... and she played again!
I've also played it again in April.. this time with just my brother, and we had a great time trying out the Black Goat in the Woods expansion (though we lost rather rapidly).

Easy one.

I bought Tikal about 18 months ago when I was still very new to the hobby. My wife was my only consistent gaming partner at that time, and we found the experience to be neat, but a bit underwhelming.

Eventually I traded it away, but it was one I was on the fence about trading. I hemmed and hawed and finally decided if it wasn't good enough to get played, it wasn't good enough to keep. My buddy Carl brought his copy to game night a few weeks ago and we played a 4-player game. It was really fun, I like the tactical gameplay of how to best help yourself while hurting your opponents. I love the look and feel of the pieces and the board. I can bring out AP in those prone to it, but all told I was happy to play this again.

I'm not sure I feel the need to reacquire it, but I'd be happy to play it a bit more.
