As is the tradition, I will start things off with my recap:

It was a long weekend for me, and I got in a bunch of gaming. I didn't get all the games I wanted to on the table, but what I did get to play was all fun! Werewolf has re-asserted itself as my most played game after this wolf filled weekend with my wife's family.

We played our first game of Roads & Boats! We had to quit at about 11:30, as we had to get up in the morning, but we made it about 2/3 of the way through, and learned how things worked. I really enjoyed it, and look forward to playing it again soon.

Friday night game night saw the play of the following titles:

Horrible game, we didnt even finish it, nothing but spin the spinner, rush the middle. Rinse, repeat ad nauseam. gulp

Fun game, 4 out of 7 people blew up on the track. 3 of us because of collision rolls, the other because he actually ran out of brakes/tires. Certainly a great day for fans of racing crashes.

Not a great game in my books, theres nothing to balance it if you get stuck with NOTHING but weak cards. Extremely annoying. First hand I was ok, the 2nd and 3rd hands I got dealt crap and had to keep passing as there was absolutely nothing to do. The game definitely needs a hand trading mechanism or something added to it so those who get stuck with a crap hand can actually play the game.

My parents came in on Saturday for the Easter Holiday and played the following on Saturday:

GREAT game, Mom and I played twice, she won both times. Very enjoyable game, and both were a close match down to the final turn.

Dad, Mom, and I played this, good game, close match, Mom ended up winning the game through a clever bid on the turn order and the fact she was able to retain Africa.

I played Rise of Empires for the very first time on Sunday as a 2-player game with my son. I'm quite impressed with this, even though we made some poor choices throughout. Looking forward to playing again this evening.

We also played our current family fav: Chicago Express.

I attempted a 4-player solo run of Tichu...just to get familiar with the cards and mechanics before introducing this to my family.

On Friday I played Frogger with my 8 yr old. The game night on Friday started with Seeland, followed by Agricola: Farmers of the Moor. Both were great games, Agricola with numbers 1, 2 and 3 at 43, 42 and 41 points and number 4 with a mere 18 points.

On Saturday Battleship and later on Amun-Re and Medieval Merchant. At both I had a fantastic start and a terrible second part. At both games I ended 5th (and last).

On Sunday I squeezed in a game of Block It! and Chicken Cha Cha Cha. I had bought Block It in a thrift store for little money and needed to play it at least once. I am trying to get my unplayed games played so this one as well. It is an ok game. Might get my 8 yr old to try it again some time.

Friday I went to The Games Keep in West Chester and picked up Silverton for some deep and versatile solitaire train gaming. I also picked up Rat-a-Tat Cat to play with my son. Friday nights we played 3 games of Rat-a-Tat Cat. Fun little game to play with kids (5 to 6 years old).

Saturday, I went to EPGS and played my first multiplayer game of Roads & Boats. It was a 2 player game. We were both noobs. Great game! My opponent was contributing to the wonder early. I decided to ignore the wonder and focus on infrastructure. It seemed like I had an early advantage because I had more transporters, was researching early and was able to grab most of the gold from the mine my opponent built. My biggest mistake was remaining content with just one quarry, while my opponent invested in a clay pit and stone factory. After two thirds of the game was comlete, my opponent had a huge, robust road system on his side of the board and several trucks while I had a small road system with wagons and donkeys and one rowboat on the river. Unfortunately, my paper mill was on one side of the board and by mid game I had a specialized gold mine, mint and stock exchange on the other side of the board. I should've buit another paper mill. It took me way to long to get the precious stock certificates. My opponent amazingly took advantage of his trucks and road system to quickly build a paper mill, mint, mine and stock exchange all adjacent to each other with connecting roads. In the last several turns of the game, he manages to catch up to me in stock and coins (surpass me by 20 points, actually) and he beat me in the wonder by about 60 points. That was quite a learning experience. I loved every minute of it, though I will admit I felt a bit exhausted after playing this brain burner for 5 and a half hours.

After R&B, I played a game of Colossal Arena with 5 players and won. That's a fun little game. I like games with wagering mechanics.

I had to leave EPGS early and head to my Mom's for dinner. Over there, I played a few rounds of Rat-a-Tat Cat with my son.

On Sunday I played a few more games of Rat-a-Tat Cat with my wife and son. This time, my son wanted to play a variant where the highest score would win, always trying to get 4 rat kings. I like it better the other way, but he gets points for trying. Playing Rat-a-Tat Cat inspired my son to create his own card game. He spent about an hour cutting cards out of cardboard and he made a robot battle card game which ended up not making a whole lot of sense (he made up the rules as he went along and conveniently every play ended up in his favor). But again, I couldn't be more proud of my little budding game designer - big points for trying! After that we played two races of Formula Motor Racing. My son and I tied with 20 points each after two races and my wife scored 12.

My eldest son came back from college at the weekend (Arts/Languages at Sydney Uni). We cracked open my new copy of Campaign Manager 2008 and used the newbie starting hands.

My son played the McCain campaign versus my Obama. I got trounced with McCain crossing the line some 20 electoral college votes ahead of Obama with 6 states outstanding.

A really enjoyable game - more 1960:TMotP-express than 1960:TMotP-lite. Lots of tension, and an early entrant for my new game of the month.

Also played my first two solitaire games of Silverton over the weekend. Again a close contender for the new game of the month. Excellent solo play, although the Excel spreadsheet available here on the 'geek is almost a 'must have' to reduce the chore of bookkeeping.

Our festivities (game-wise) started off on Thursday with our first play of Dominion. I've had this on my wish list for quite awhile, even promoted it to a "must have" before quietly withering under the mass hysteria (or at least overwhelming popularity) surrounding this game and letting it slink back down to a "thinking about it"...

So I picked it up.

I didn't have high hopes before playing it ~ I enjoyed M:TG way back at the dawn of its time, but I prefer the tactile feel of a board ~ even if the board is made up of tiles. My eldest son had somewhat of the same feeling going into it, but we were both pleasantly surprised.

It took us a couple of turns to realize how the game would flow, and then things went along beautifully (more so for him, as he won by such a wide margin it wasn't even funny!) We haven't exactly become ravening fanboys, but I'm sure this will get many more plays further on down the line.

My nephew came over and after we felt that lovely Sunday earthquake we decided to play a few games.

He was really hot for Last Night on Earth: The Zombie Game. We had not played in a while and he has beat me each time in head to head games. I took the Zombies and he the heroes in the first scenario. I was able to kill both the father and the drifter with some good card play and won the game quit easily.

Our second game was, Roll Through the Ages: The Bronze Age. He had beaten me at this game last time too. It seemed I was doomed for a repeat has he had most of the wonders built. With some luck and him getting quite a few disasters, I was able to build empire which game me a bonus point for each city I had built at the end of the game. It was close but I manged to eek out a victory.

On Friday, we gave Insula it's first spin, and we lost completely, with night arriving while we weren't even close to getting to that last tile.

We did come to some realizations:

First off, the rules really aren't as complex as they seem to be on first pass. Maybe because the rules are laid out to introduce concepts slowly, with the basics, then further details, we were expecting them to be more complicated than they were. Right around the time we realized this, night fell and it was over for us.

Secondly, the game is extremely challenging for two players, even when they're working together as they learn the game. The last part had something to do with it, but we both had the feeling that more players would make it work better. Of course, more players would also mean night had a better chance of arriving sooner...

Third ~ don't take your time in getting to your goal. That strategy might help you explore the game a bit, but being tentative and cautious doesn't work to well.

I don't think my son was all that impressed ~ he didn't dislike it, but he didn't love it. I really enjoyed the game and want to try it out with four or five people, and maybe try a more informed 2 player game now that we know what to expect.

On Saturday, I introduced my eldest son to the wonders of boardspace.net, and we played:

3 games of Tablut ~ one to familiarize him with it, and then once each at each side

2 games of Qyshinsu: Mystery of the Way ~ I think he liked this one best.

1 game each of Lines of Action and Santorini

I'd really like to get physical copies of all these games... of course LoA can use checkers, so technically I do have that game; that's also the only one of the bunch that I really rely on the code to point out where I can possibly move each piece. I'm getting the hang of it, but I still lean on those "here! here! here! or here!" arrows a wee bit too much...

I hate to be a copycat but Roads & Boats was each of our favorites this weekend so it deserved the place of honor as the item added.

Friday - With Friday comes game night. We arrived a bit early and got in a play of Race for the Galaxy (+ all expansions, goal tiles) with our host while waiting for the others. We followed that with Mission: Red Planet, which was won with a huge lead. Frank's Zoo hit the table. We played a first hand, then agreed to finish the game out using the partnership rules. It's a good game that I wish we played more. Last up for the night was Phoenicia. I learned it goes differently with more than two players. I suspect I might like it best with more than 2 but fewer than 5.

Saturday - RnR taught me Kontor during breakfast. We played twice with each of us winning once. It's interesting how the goods have a rock/paper/scissor mechanic. After hours of dog baths we set up Roads & Boats. We'd intended to take a break part way through but were both so engrossed that we forgot. RnR pursued a stock certificate strategy while I tried for producing lots of stuff to buy wonder bricks to push the end of the game. RnR got as far as producing gold, which gave him the win. His 4 gold more than made up for my more than double lead in wonder points. I think if I'd flailed less in the first several turns that I could've made it work. It's a very good game. We finished the day by playing Il Principe during a late dinner. RnR earned his first win!

Sunday - At the Gates of Loyang hit the table first. We've been trading wins back and forth. I won this time, but only on the tie breaker of cash. We each had 18 points. Seeing all those fields inspired us to get outside into the sunshine and get some yardwork done. While taking a snack break on the deck we played Kalah. We figured it was a good yard work break game - it didn't matter much if we lost a rock, since New England is full of 'em. We went on a tour in 10 Days in Asia inspired by our dinner of carrot curry. We teleported over to the Mediterranean region for Oltre Mare. I won, but just barely. RnR had tons of pirate cards but very good sets. I had only one pirate card but awful sets. The final point count was tense but I caught and passed him by one point at the very end.

Power Grid: France/Italy
The abundance of nuclear early with the France map made a significant difference. My wife got in that market right away, and it allowed me to stay with coal a lot longer than I normally would. I was able to stock up on cheap coal late, and my last two plant buys were the 34 (nuclear/5), and 50 (W/6). Added to my 31 (coalcoalcoal/6) and 33 (W/4), I was able to buy a total of nuclear in the last two rounds, and jumped from 15 to 21 cities with the money saved in the final round.

Power Grid: Flux Generator
I had my eye on the card as I was still pretty invested in coal when it came up, and trash was reaching a reasonable cost. My wife ended up with it, but it proved to not matter. Neat card, not sure if it's overpowered for the cost though.

Dominion, Dominion: Intrigue, Dominion: Seaside
Two plays, and we split the series. I realized after a few turns in the second game that I should have focused on a different card combo. I grabbed a Remodel in an attempt to rid myself of those cards, but didn't get things going quick enough. Only lost by two, so it was at least respectable.

Pickomino
Not a full game, but a few rounds to teach some cousins. They seemed to like it, and Mom would like to get them a few games to play at home. Mission accomplished. devil

After coming across this game a little while ago, I ordered a copy for me (and a copy for my brother, though he doesn't know it yet!). It came direct from the publisher across the ocean really quickly and Saturday night, my wife and I sat down to play it for the first time.

I had read the rules (and several clarifications) on BGG, so things progressed fairly smoothly. I hadn't printed out a score sheet though, which was a mistake - one that was remedied mid-game as I was calculating who played who and my wife suggested it might help! Anyway, for those that are unfamiliar, it is played in a group phase, then two teams from each group go onto a knockout phase, just like in the real World Cup. We had dealt all teams out randomly, so there were several groups where we had 3 teams or 1 team and were trying to fix things so the other player's team was the one eliminated. I missed KO'ing Germany, but my wife was much more effective at doing the same to Spain - she ended up with 10 of the last 16 teams, inlcuding North Korea, who had knocked out both my Ivory Coast and Portugal. In the knockout phase, we had a little rules mix up - how you play some of the cards wasn't clear, so we ended up playing it actually wrong, which did detract from this part. Plus my wife didn't get the cards to push her teams forward too well (perhaps only having a few to concentrate on helped me?) so my Netherlands teams swept all aside, meeting her Switzerland (!) in the final, where the Orange triumphed 3-2.

We both enjoyed the Group phase more, though of course, since we played it wrong, we might like it better next time. It did run pretty long though - box says 75 min, we took twice that! We'll see if she will indulge my soccer game a second time.

Sunday was Easter of course and we had friends over and we made it is feaster. My friend cooked a leg of lamb, while we provided the sides, all of which turned out delicious. Rounded out with strawberry-rhubarb pie, it was a fine evening and we had (just about) enough wits left by the end to play Ubongo. I am normally pretty good at this and got off to a good start, collecting a nice haul of red gems. Geoff had the tan ones in abundance too though and I was barely ahead when I got two turns in a row where I finished solving last (curse that zig-zaggy one!), while sitting on an empty column. So Geoff got ahead, while our spouses collected a nice variety.

Have to say this game has grown on me - better as a 4 player game, as I played it first only 2 player. Though it is pretty light on strategy.

I've had an excellent gaming weekend!

On Friday I had a good one-on-one session with one of my friends. We played Space Hulk, Race for the Galaxy, and Dominion (including Intrigue). Also, I had an incredibly fun Cosmic Encounter game with three others.

Saturday was game-less.

Sunday was the rekindling-day of my enjoyment of Settlers of Catan. I had a great time playing this with my girlfriend and her family.

Happy easters everyone!

At boardgame night with the group, I got my first head-to-head in Washington's War. It was a good game, but I (British) got beat. My opponent is a really sharp guy, so it's a good learning experience.

Afterward, I played

I was the Norse gods and the forces of Chaos defeated me by chopping down the tree of life. It was my first time playing it and it was a very fun game.

It was the most fun I ever had losing every game I played.

I solitaired A Victory Denied during the Easter holidays to see how it played, but the highlight of the whole year was playing card games with my granny (turns 90 in a few months) and trying as hard as I could to beat her! (She is a very good player and a cutthroat player!)

I should have taken with me my Dominion game to see if it was up to her taste, although the small typing would probably have broken the game for her. Nowadays Rummykub is her favourite.

Friday night we started my Moonshae Chronicles campaign at level 1. We played a long session from 2pm until 1am and my wife was kind enough feed us with homemade pizzas. No TPK's by me, which happens a lot at first level! whistle A great time for me and the gang.

Saturday night I got to play Runewars. It was an really good game with battles going back and forth, alliances, betrayals, Hero Duels. Everything you could hope to have happen in a Game of Runewars. It was a Big Epic game from 8pm until 2:30am (we had a power outage and took a late dinner break!).
Sunday my wife and I went over to her Cousin's home for Easter dinner and then we all played Texas Hold'em Poker until Midnight. Overall the weekend was a great success and I had more fun in 3 days of gaming than I have had since the Christmas holidays!
