Basic Etiquette

First of all, please treat a game of BSG PBF as if you were sitting down to a game at a con. There will be accusations and some games can get heated, but don't post anything in a game that you wouldn't say to a stranger's face at a con.

Second, geekmails about the game must be only between yourself and the mod, to prevent under-the-counter tabletalk.

Third, remember that we're all human. Everyone (the other players, the mod, you yourself) makes mistakes.

Frequency of checking in

This gets its own item due to how critical it is.

At a bare minimum, you should be checking in at least once a day. Shoot for at least two or three times a day. Seriously. Checking in only once a day can make your turn go 4-5 days, during which time the other players will get bored and start checking in less themselves, and eventually the game grinds to a near-halt.

If, for some reason, you absolutely can't check in more than once a day, then put in COs as often as you can.

Also, if something's going to come up (vacation, business trip, etc) where your ability to check in will be restricted, please let the group know. People on here tend to be very understanding, since we all have times where we're just plain unavailable.

Posting protocols

When you geekmail the mod, please put "BSG XX" (where XX is your game number) in the subject line. A good format to follow:
BSG XX: (character name): (subject)
Example: "BSG 83: Starbuck: CO for Evasive Maneuvers"

In the game itself:
Normal text for regular game discussion
Italics for fluff text/roleplaying
Bold for in-game moves and actions

The last one is extremely important. If you don't bold your official moves, actions, and decisions, things can get very tricky for the mod, who then has to make a risky judgement call.

Also, each post should include a picture or banner of your character, to make it instantly clear who's talking. Changing your avatar is fine, but when you change your avatar, it changes in all your old posts as well. If people read an old game, they may wonder why Baltar is flying around in a viper, then XOing Cavil to activate the President's Office. A picture in the post itself solves that.

Example:

Okay. I'll park myself in Command for XOs to blast the Raiders if they get too close to the civilians. Since I don't have an XO, I'll do the best thing I can at the moment.

Move: Command
Action: Play 2 - Launch Scout
Pass on interrupts

"Racetrack, Skulls, get out there and scope things out. I want a full report in 24 hours, or you're both getting tossed in the frakkin' brig!"

How to post pictures (including banners)

Click on the picture of Tigh in "Posting protocols," then look at your address bar. It should say
http://www.boardgamegeek.com/image/587509/gerryrailbaron

The number in there is the picture number. To put a picture in your post, click on the camera icon in the "Formatting" row, and enter the picture number. You'll get something that looks like this (without the space):

[Im ageID=587509]

And there's your picture. Naturally, you can just enter the code in manually, the camera icon is just a nice shortcut.

Banners are a little different. Many people like to resize them for easier viewing. The Tigh banner above is picture #544203

[Im ageID=544203] (without the space, of course) will get you

To resize, just add "medium" after the number

[Im ageID=544203medium] becomes

There is a massive gallery of pictures (with banners) here: Battlestar Galactica - Online BGG Game - Photo Gallery / Avatars

Conditional Orders (COs)

These can really speed up a game. Conditional Orders are simply instructions geekmailed to the mod. Sometimes they'll be simple instructions, like "Pass on playing cards into the skill check."

They can be, well, conditional (hence the term). Example:

"If Starbuck, Chief, and Helo put in less than 3 cards total, play 5 - Declare Emergency into the check. If they play 3 or more cards total, play 2 - Executive Order into the check."

The important thing is that they're clear for the moderator to understand.

It's a great idea to put in COs for Evasive Maneuvers ("always/never/only when a piloted viper is hit") and Strategic Planning for attacking ships and scouting ("never/only when Zarek or I are scouting").

Planning ahead

If you like to discuss your move with other players and get feedback, please try to do so as much in advance as is feasible. Toss out your potential moves ("If I get an XO, I could play it on Adama or Roslin, or if I don't, I could move to either Command or Weapons Control and scout") while the skill check is going on, or while you wait for the President or Admiral to make a decision.

If you're not the next player in line, you can make your suggestions for moves for that player.

Advance planning isn't always possible, especially if passing/failing the skill check will result in very different game scenarios (like, say, passing or failing Colonial Day when Morale is already in the red). But when you can, it can speed up a game by days.

Bookmark the goods!

I go between 2 computers when participating in BGG's PBF BSG games. I do the following to makes things easier for me....

1) keep a text file of copy and paste material on each computer....

PLAYER ORDER
Sample below, a real text file will look nicer since it preserves tabs and other formatting....
p1 Caprica Six Tinculin
p2 Ellen arkibet
p3 Cain Capt_WaRPed

p4 Dee ghostOfChristmas
p5 Kat -----------
p6 Baltar Grundza

This is at least good towards the beginning when you're getting yourself oriented with the group and characters. Worst case scenario is you play a game where no one puts up images nor IDs their character (no beating around the bush here, I was guilty as charged), so at least you can refer to something like that.

My bad! Was NOT aware that you can't QuickQuote a GeekList entry. YOu can however QuickQuote the Geeklist Comment below cool

That'll get you the full formatting whenever you post. As to where to put the value of the card.... do whatever your group does. You may even delete half of these say, if you know the character you choose won't draw any of those types of skill cards.

MORE FORMATTING
Your temp avatar/banner/character photo to be included in each post. See Geeklist entry above on how to do this.

2) bookmark the forum thread
Use BGG's quickBar feature, or save using you browser's bookmark/favorites function. I go so far as to update to the current page/post every now and then

3) bookmark the geeklist (if there is a geeklist)
Similar to above, either using BGG's quickBar or through your browser.

EDIT: ADDED Treachery cards to formatting and yellow alternative.

Notify people of edits!

If you subscribe to a thread, you will be notified through BGG of new posts to that thread. It will NOT notify you (at least last I checked) of when you edit something, so it may be better to make a new post, or simply geekmail those you may be waiting up on to drop a line that you have posted what they needed of you.

Abilities and OPGs
Most of these will be pretty standard in PBF, like those that are Movement or Action. Some, like Zarek's FiLP and Tigh's Cylon Hatred are activated at very specific times, and so there will be a fair chance to get those in at the proper time.

However, some abilities and OPGs can be very hairy. Here's how I personally recommend handling them, though be aware, YMMV and your mod may want to do it differently.

For abilities that kick in at the end of a skill check (Adama's Command Authority, Chief's Blind Devotion, Six's Human Delusion): when you pass or play into the check itself, let the mod know if you want to have the opportunity to use your power. The mod can hold off once all the cards are in (and revealed, if appropriate), and then you can make your decision before the game moves on.

For abilities that kick in before a crisis (Helo's Moral Compass, Boomer's Mysterious Intuition, Starbuck's Secret Destiny, Dee's Fast Learner): this is a tough one. Again, this is just my personal recommendation. Try to have a running CO if you can ("If the crisis is a cylon attack, use my Secret Destiny", "If the Admiral or President makes a choice that reduces Morale, use my Moral Compass"). Again, it can even be an order to hold off on resolving a crisis ("If the crisis is a skill check that involves fuel, please hold off on calling for interrupts so I can decide whether to use Mysterious Intuition")

Above all else, make sure you're checking in regularly! If you're not, the game may be into the next player's crisis when you decide you wanted to use your Command Authority to scoop up all those great cards.

Interrupts
Interrupts are handled differently in PBF than in the face to face game. In f2f, you go around the table, giving each person a chance to pass or play. In PBF, it's more free-for-all. What you'll see is a token looking like one of these:
INTERRUPT Token wrote:
Action Interrupt: Crisis Skill Check - Elections Loom: 8 YG

Please Play,Pass, or Geekmail any of the following:
Investigative Committee
Scientific Research
One of: Jury Rigged, At Any Cost,Guts and Initiative or Support the People
Declare Emergency CO's

Roslin -
Cain -
Chief -
Apollo -
Starbuck -
INTERRUPT Token wrote:
Action Interrupt: Die Roll - Launch Scout: 3+

Please Play,Pass, or Geekmail any of the following:
Strategic Planning
Calculations CO's

Tigh -
Boomer -
Baltar -
Dee -
Zarek -
When you see this, copy the token ("Quickquote" works well) and put "Pass" or the actual interrupt card after your character. Once it's posted in the token, it's official. You don't have to wait for your "turn" with interrupts in PBF.

This is also the time to put in COs for Declare Emergency and Calculations cards for after the check/die roll. Few mods will stop the action when a check fails by 1 or 2 to ask everyone for Declare Emergency cards. It simply drags the game down too much.

How do you avoid two people trying to play interrupts? Most mods will give the choice to the current player. However, the best way to avoid problems is discussion!

One last note: when you post the token, please clean it up! Delete all the other [ q = ] and [ / q ] marks around the token, along with the other text you may have grabbed with "Quickquote." Otherwise, you get a bit of a mess:

Baltar wrote:
I don't think it's worth it
Dee wrote:
I could play an SP if people think it's worth it

Strategic Planning
Calculations CO's

Tigh -
Boomer - Pass
Baltar - Pass

Geek Mail & "Labels" & Drafts

Moderator Tips

Especially useful for moderators are the tags in Geekmail. I create one for each game, and I have another one, "CONTINGENCY", which I use to mark all CO's.

Here you see my in-basket, with a number of labelled geekmails. And the Nav Bar to the left, showing all the labels I have.

As each geekmail arrives, you use "More actions" to label it for the game involved. If it is a "CO", I label it TWICE, once with the game name, and again with the "CONTINGENCY" label. I also label all outgoing messages as well. Then if I need to review something for a game, I simply click on the appropriate label in the left Nav Bar. Or if I'm looking for CO's I merely click on "CONTINGENCY". Once a CO is no longer in effect, the CONTINGENCY label is removed.

Here I have selected BSG 108:
This is extremely useful when there's an extra or dropped skill card in a hand. I can go back, find when all the hands went out, find exactly what they were sent, and review the thread. And repeat it again for the previous turn. I have never NOT been able to solve a missing/extra card problem because of this.

Once a geekmail has been dealt with, I archive them until the end of the game. Archiving allows me to check back in a problem situation, as outlined above. At the end of the game I use the label in the Nav Bar and "Select All" to delete them, and again to empty the trash.

Player Tips
Consider using "Drafts" for your "hand of cards". As each geekmail arrives from your moderator, "Forward" it to yourself. BUT, instead of hitting "Send", hit "Save as Draft".

Your Drafts folder ends up holding your cards for you. As you receive new hand updates, you can delete older hands.

More importantly, you can edit a geekmail to make notes, or to keep things current. In the geekmail with your loyalty card you can add the imageid of your character's banner, or other frequently used photos. (I use this geekmail for game-long notes since my current hand keeps getting replaced).

When you play a card from your hand, you edit the draft, cut and paste the card into the forum post, and then use the ABC strike-thru button to show it as played:

I prefer strike-thrus over deleting the card, because often you have two or more of the same card. With the strike-thrus I KNOW I played one of them, otherwise you may be guessing "do I have 1 of these left, or 2?"

QuickBar Tips for All
If you play a LOT of BSG via PBF, there is a lot of on-line help here at bgg. I find it easy to fly around the site pulling up what Ineed with about a dozen quickbar addresses. The 10 most common are:

Which are defined as

The character Cards are not ONE spot for all the cards of that bar, rather, it is a spot in the game's gallery where you can see the first character's card, and the rest in the list appear somewhere in the "filmstrip" preview/navigator above the main picture.

I have a few other labels in another quickbar, to the Photo Gallery, The PBF Forum in general, and the Waiting List Wiki.

Always be aware that you are just playing a game

I have seen players get worked up about the behavior of other players. I have seen human players getting angry about actions of another supposedly human player, without realizing that they were actually dealing with a hidden Cylon. I have seen players getting angry about actions of another player who simply had a different view on how the game should be played.

BSG can be played in many different ways. Some F2F groups have cocked up their own perspectives and strategies. Since PBF games are often between players who usually do not play together, their playstyles might not mesh very well. You should see that as a challenge rather than an obstruction.

If there are some playstyles that bother you, discuss them before the game starts. Typical issues might be:
- Card counting: a few players are avid card counters and will know much more about the hidden aspects of the game than others -- if that bothers you, make sure that nobody in the game does that, or at least that nobody discusses what they know from counting cards.
- Executions: some groups use executions to determine the loyalty of title-bearers, while others find that a cheesy tactic that should not be used -- if you are really bothered by the use of executions in a non-roleplaying way, then say so beforehand.
- Blind Jumping: many players don't like Cain's OPG, because it breaks the game in favor of the humans if Cain turns out to be human -- if you are one of those players, ask the mod to at least house-rule Cain's OPG.

Once you have started playing, you have a responsibility to do your best to finish the game. Everybody will understand if real-life issues force you to drop out. But there will be little understanding for someone dropping out because the game is developing in a way that they find bothersome.

Acronyms and abbreviations used...

AFAIK, the most commonly used ones:
CO = conditional order
Set up and sent to the game mod. Used when you need to make a move/action/decision point and you're not around. Some of them are by default, like passing on Evasive Maneuvers, and vary by game and mod.

XO = Executive Order skill card

OPG = Once Per Game = Character's once per game ability. In Daybreak with Miracle Tokens, still referred to that at times, even though it's not technically "once per game" anymore

CFB = Cylon Fleet Board
the optional module from Exodus exp (plus all aspects of it, like the better, Mark VIIs, CAG Chooses crisis cards, 4 extra raiders, etc.), as well as just the physical board itself.

CAC = Cylon Attack Card = Crisis cards that have the diagram of setting up cylon and Colonial Fleet ships. Used in lieu of the CFB

CL = Cylon Leader
"4th category" of characters. From Pegasus or Daybreak. They get either an Agenda or Motives, instead of Loyalty cards, and play "half and half" on human and Cylon side

[1-6] = shorthand notation for sectors 1 through 6

civvy = Civilian ship. Civvy A for Civilian ship A

FTL = FTL Control = that location on Galactica

Less common ones:
IN = Ionian Nebula = optional module + objective in Exodus
NC = New Caprica = optional module + objective in Pegasus

CP = Consolidate Power = yellow/Politics skill card
LS = Launch Scout = purple/Tactics skill card
StP = Support The People = yellow/Politics skill card from Pegasus

AR = Assault Raptor = New ship type used in Daybreak

PG = Personal Goal = Part of the optional Conflicted Loyalties module in Exodus. YANAC Loyalty card with text effects that can lose resources if not completed with an action

FF/F5 = Final Five. Part of the optional Conflicted Loyalties module in Exodus. YANAC Loyalty card with text effects that discourage wanton executions

My own:
Qcard = Quorum card
C1 = Colonial One = ship
WC = Weapons Control = Location on Galactica
Comms = Communications = location on Galactica
Commd = Command = location on Galactica
AAC = At Any Cost = green/Leadership skill card from Pegasus
G&I = Guts & Initiative = purple/Tactics skill card from Pegasus
IW = Iron Will = green/Leadership skill card from Exodus
SoE = State Of Emergency = green/Leadership skill card from Exodus
