Here are the list of newish games at the Gathering. I missed out on a few (Glen Moore was at the top of the list), but overall I'm pretty happy with what I was able to play.

Clearly the best game at the Gathering. Draft cards with players to build your civilization. 3-7 players, with the three games I played (4, 5, and 7) taking about 30 minutes each. Very interesting choices, though most people agree that Military need to be adjusted for balance (it's a little too powerful) and scoring (it takes longer to score accurately than all the other categories combined, and then some). Once military is fixed, this is lining up to be a great great game, one I'll be definitely picking up at Essen when it's available.

Played a really solid two player card game from FF. Can't talk about it, but it was apparently at the Gathering last year and I missed it. Great choices and a nice 20-30 minute length.

Played this three times, and while there are moments of hilarity and lots of fun, this is a game I won't be getting. And I love party games. Here's why I won't add it to my collection (though I'd be up for playing it again, but not at my house):

1) We played with our own Gathering-style rules. The rules in the game are terrible.

2) It's a little too long. Two rounds would be enough, but the third round makes the game drag on to about an hour unless you aggressively man the timer. I guess you could house rule this as well...

3) The markers in the game wear out fast. One of the copies that saw a lot of play at the Gathering had used-up markers that wouldn't write and were all mushed up.

4) It's a mess. On the white tablecloths at the Gathering, cleaning the boards resulted in big blotches of black marker stains where each player sat. There's NO WAY I want this game played at my house, where my poker-felt-covered table would get all black and disgusting after just one game.

After three plays, I think I got it out of my system anyway...

Robo Rally that's fun! Dice are rolled which determine the direction of the asteroids, then each player programs their moves in a limited amount of time. When time is up, the asteroids are moved and then the players' ships are moved. It's fun, it makes your brain work in a pleasing way, and it's NOT chaotic (unlike other comments I've read), in that you can always map out exactly where the asteroids will go and where you'll go.

It plays fast and everyone playing seemed to have a lot of fun, and is unique enough to keep players interested. Also, there are several variants to gameplay that should keep the game fresh for quite a while.

After 1 play of a three player game, I was intrigued by the bidding mechanism. After a play of a four player game, I had doubts about the bidding and was concerned about the player ordering impact which is huge. Game #3 sealed it for me: the player ordering combined with the random card draws makes this game either incredibly frustrating or mildly satisfying. That third play was my last ever as a result.

Worker placement with the most tension in the actual placing that I've seen yet. Each placement is gut wrenching...there are things you need, but if you choose them, you're essentially wasting one or more placements for other things. In the game I played, Jay crushed Valerie and I by almost double our score because he was solidly focused on getting what he needed, while we went after easy targets. Very interesting and one of my favorites. I'm a little concerned that it might have a significant experienced-player advantage (as evidenced by the slaughter that took place when I played) but I can live with that.

Shill Alert! This is the first time the Gathering werewolf players played with the new roles in Classic Movie Monsters (shipping now!) and I was very excited to see how they took to the roles. There were some real winners and a few meh's:

Teenage Werewolf: As designed, this werewolf who is so darn excited to be a werewolf that he must say "werewolf" once a day or he dies kept the conversation going on the first few days until, invariably, he was discovered by the village. My current favorite for fighting the first-day random lynching morass.

Frankenstein's Monster: When a villager with a special power (seer, witch, hunter, etc.) dies, Franky gets their powers. In a super village setup with 25 players, 6 werewolves and Franky, the player who was Frankenstein's Monster saved the day.

Count Dracula: A great "timer" mechanism to distract the village while the werewolves slowly bring the game to an end, The Count picks a new wife each night (they are secretly told they are wives) and once three wives make it through a day/night cycle, Drac wins. In our game, Frank Dilorenzo picked the Seer as his first wife, which made the game quite tense when the third day rolled around.

The Blob: Another timer mechanism, the Blob secretly absorbs players to his right each night. If all the players are part of the Blob, the original Blob player wins, which is what happened during the first play of the Blob.

Zombie: Each night the Zombie eats a player's brain, that player can no longer vote the rest of the game. Fun and strategic, the Zombie can only win if everyone's brain is eaten.

Of the 20 games of Ultimate Werewolf played at the Gathering, we used the Classic Movie Monster roles in about 6 or 7 of them.

Fun fast paced collection-ish game with some interesting take that aspects. It turns out we played it slightly wrong, and that it was really less take-thatty than we expected, but still very very fun and fast.

Another FF game, this one a railish game. Fun, but not necessarily as engaging as I'd like, mainly due to the distribution of cards. I'm hoping it'll be streamlined and tweaked by Essen, if it is released then.

Ticked Off from R&R Games!

Shill Alert! This is my game that R&R is publishing (not sure why there isn't an entry for it on BGG yet). I love what they are doing with the component art. In Ticked Off! players bid that they know more items in a category than their opponents. But there's a twist. The players are bidding on a single known category, but right before the timer starts, another category is displayed, and players may choose either category. Interactive, fast paced and inventive. And I am totally biased.

Let me preface this by saying that I don't care for Brass. I don't like the fiddly rules, the hard-to-get-your-mind-wrapped-around scoring aspects, the loan system, and the development mechanism that requires that you throw away tiles. Age of Industry makes the game 20% shorter but doesn't really address any of those issues. It certainly didn't make me want to play it more than Brass, and I think Brass players would be hard pressed to play it more than Brass as well. Not sure who this game is for, then...

Another Easy Play game, this is a dice-roller that was definitely fast and fun, a little bit cant stop in terms of dice allocation. Probably not good enough to pick up as it was a little long (30 minutes) relative to other Easy Play titles.

Shill Alert! My game, I had a few preproduction copies with me, and I introduced the game to a number of other players during the week. I like it best with two, then three, and then four. Build up your hand and then play cards to increase your abilities to draw more cards, hold more cards and cubes, and trade in more cards for cubes, all while racing your opponents to fill up your board. the game picks up speed at a wicked pace, from a nice leisurely stroll when you first start to sub-light speed craziness at the endgame. The good news for me as a designer is that after 50+ plays of the game, I still really enjoy it.

Fun gathering fact: I showed the game to Joe Huber and James Davis, and then after they were several turns in played a two player game of PMM with Ravindra. We finished 5 minutes before Joe and James, so it appears that Joe is getting slower in his old age...

A non-messy (relatively) dry erase game that I won on my first try, despite not understanding the rules correctly until about 50% of the way in. A little mind bendy and fast, this is one from Essen that I'll probably want to pick up.

Abysmal. Lots of familiar mechanics, each of which is done rather poorly. The only thing that saved this from an even lower rating is the component quality and art, both of which are quite nice. Our five-player group quit the game 2/3 of the way through, which is pretty rare for me. Yuck yuck yuck.

This was my 2nd favorite game of The Gathering. I can't talk about it, but it was one I am definitely looking to see published, hopefully in the near future. A neat twist on a classic idea!

Dry and somewhat interesting. Kind of like Through the Desert as a share acquisition game. But overall the actions of other players have too much impact on your game, making it have a chaotic feel for a what seems like it should be a very strategic game.

Okay, I was NOT a playtester for this game (unlike Dominion, Intrigue, Seaside and Prosperity), so I'm not biased for a change. Maybe I'm anti-biased, because I just didn't care for it that much. There are potions required to generate many of the new Kingdom cards, but the new cards aren't particularly interesting, and the potions simply add time and extra cards to your deck (and frustration for some unluckly players who could never time it right). Here's my dominion/expansion ranking from best to worst:

1. Prosperity. Easily the best in the series. Kick ass.
2. Seaside. Turns Dominion into a real gamer's game.
3. Dominion. Classic and dry but solidly engaging.
4. Intrigue. Take thatty, kind of mean, but a few gems.
5. Alchemy. Cluttered and busy. Nice art, however.
