Recently I've discovered Successors on the Geek, and I really want to get it but I know that if I do, I'll never play it. It's just the wrong combination of theme and complexity for my gaming group, which I've run into problems with in the past, finding games that I believed would be hits only to find out that factors that I hadn't considered problems would lead to the game being rejected.

You can take this as a list of good games you should consider trying, or perhaps as a list of games that should be avoided for the issues I will point out, or you can take this as a list of games that you should consider carefully in light of your own groups idiosyncrasies, something I may have neglected in these purchases.

This is certainly the prime example of rejection by our group. Having tried twice to start this game, both times ended with reading the rules and deciding that we didn't really want to take the time to learn what we perceive to be fiddly exceptions and complications. It doesn't help that it looks like you'd really need a few people to make the game fun and I can't get more than 2 interested at a time, partly due to the political nature of the game and partly due to perceptions that this is just a fancier version of Risk.

Over two years on the shelf and its future doesn't look hopeful.

I actually bought this game primarily because it was ranked #1 on the Geek, and the colonial theme definitely appeals to me. Unfortunately, that same theme doesn't appeal to many others in my group, and the couple of people that do like the theme don't like the amount of subtle maneuvering and manipulating that is required for victory.

Managed one play about a year ago and despite everyone seeming to have fun, no one has shown any interest in repeating it again.

Despite a science fiction theme that is perfect for our group and two mostly enjoyable games, a long discussion has established that we probably won't be playing it again. The problem is a combination of it being far too long and players feeling out of control for too much of the game. It seems when this game goes right, it goes very right, but no one is interested in investing the time it takes to find those moments.

It's been about 6 months, and I don't see it being played again.

This is probably the biggest shame on the list, as it truly is a terrific game that everyone loves, but it seems that it just doesn't work well without 5 players, and that is an unfortunate number for us, as we tend to get 4 or 6 (but never 5) together at a time. Never before have I had such a good game that has been so completely rejected due to a player requirement.

Haven't played it in about 6 months, but I always keep it accessible for that moment when the stars are right.

We all love this game, but a few of us (including myself) just can't stand how many denial effects are in this game. I hold onto hope that this is partly due to our inexperience with the game, but after the last game feeling like everything anyone did was simply rejected by one card or another, it left a very sour taste in our mouths.

We will likely play it again, but if this experience repeats itself, this game may find itself rejected completely.

This, like Android, is a game that is being rejected due to length more than anything else. We've always enjoyed our games of this, but the very long setup and play time has left its future uncertain, and some players have felt that the game tends towards a Cold War-style buildup of forces without much actual action, which has turned them off.

I could definitely see more plays in the future, but excitement over this game has died down significantly as we find ourselves gravitating towards games with shorter play times.

I can't quite fathom why this game hasn't been played more. We let it sit on a shelf for a few months before we tried it, then discovered that it's a wonderful game that's short, strategic and surprisingly deep considering how little there is to the game. I think the ancient theme has been part of its unpopularity, as well as it perhaps feeling a bit too abstract for our tastes.

It's been months since we've played it, but it still comes up as an occasional treat.

Another game that is well liked by our group and will probably see more plays. However, it's popularity is certainly waning considerably and considering that we played it 3 times the day we got it, 6 total plays isn't looking good. I think there are a combination of issues that have left us playing other games over this, including a feeling that you can't do enough during your turn and it appearing that we've figured out the game and there's nothing new to see.

This will probably continue to see play when we have larger groups and when non-gamers are in the mix, but I think it's off the list for regular play.

Ah, theme, how you irritate me. Not that I dislike Agricola's theme, but I dislike it when a game I like has a theme that others don't. And that is the problem here: farming is boring for too many people, so we'll end up playing something else. It doesn't help that the farmers are discs.

As you can see, I've managed to force some plays in, but only once have I played it with 3 people, and I can't see going above that.

It may be cheating to consider a game with 50 or more plays as being "rejected," but understand that those many, many games we've played occurred years ago, when we played it often and believed there were no other games that could match it. Then we discovered the vast array of great board games out there and now I have played this maybe once in the last 3 years. You see, the problem is that this is still one of my favorite games, but no one else seems to feel the same, finding it far too long and, towards the end, to have an undesirable amount of accounting.

Maybe if the stars are right (or if I hide the rest of our board games) I'll get to play this again.
