First of all to Aldie and Derk: Thank you sooo much for starting this great show. Absolutely fantastic work.

While listening to GeekSpeak I always have a great time especially hearing Aldie, Derk and guests struggling with the titles of german games. So while on one hand I really like the way you guys (and maybe non german speaking english speaking people in general) interpret a title, on the other hand it would be just fair to give an idea how to pronounce them correctly.

Please don't regard this list as some kind of fault-finderish, weisenheimerish german lecture (what it's really not intended to be) or feel offended by it. But please DO add oppinions, comments, corrections or other weird sounding games.

Das Shpeel (translation: The Game "Oh, really...?")

In German 'sp' at the beginning of a word is always 'shp'. Well, at least most germans pronounce it that way...the Friesen from the northern part still refuse to.

Ok, 'Zoch' is similar to the word 'Loch' so listen to the example and replace the first letter.

It's the Title of a famous fairy tale from the fairy tale collection of the Grimm Brothers (http://www.4literature.net/Jacob_and_Wilhelm_Grimm/Hans_in_L...) Maybe you already know this. I have no idea how famous the Grimm's are outside of Germany.

Shtimfee (translation: something like 'electing cattle' or 'voting cattle' or 'voter cattle' or whatever...)

I heard this word the first time when i heard of this game. It seems to be a deprecative word which describes the voting public which politicians see as dumb cattle whose only purpose is to vote for them.)

That's it for today, I have an exam in biochemistry in Thursday and it's already 1am (or pm? I always mix this up...it's 1 hour after midnight) and I need some rest. More later.

This was commonly pronounced as 'Goldbrow' on GeekSpeak, which would be correct if the 'a' weren't an Umlaut (Goldbrau Goldbräu). That makes the correct pronounciation 'Goldbroy'.

A pun. Katzenjammer originally describes cats which are howling at night time. But Katzenjammer also means 'hangover'.

This list wouldn't be complete without discussing how the Germans pronounce "Jahres," and in particular the "Spiel des Jahres."

Spiel des Jahres = "Speel des Yahr-ess."

I bring this up because despite repeated coaching, a friend of mine persists in pronouncing this as "Speel day yahr." Surely other English-speakers who studied French in high school are doing the same thing.
