Don't get me wrong, I love my wife and kids, and I love being a husband and a daddy. But having a two-year-old and a six-month-old eats into any personal time I hope to have. On average, I can get maybe 1-2 games in a week, and that's if she doesn't have to work the same evenings my group holds game nights.

So the prospect of having the house to myself for a whole week was too good to be true. I took a few days off of work, set up my own personal game day, attended every event I could, and played more games than I have in years.

Here is my session report from JOSH-CON(tm).

Monday

I live in Rochester, NY, smack-dab between Buffalo and Syracuse. I'm also a card-carrying member of the Rochester Boardgaming Society, and in many of our events with get a lot of people from Buffalo's group (BACSIM). I decided it was about time to visit our brothers and sisters at the Syracuse Boardgamer's and their FLGS Play the Game, Read the Story.

So after dropping off my wife and kids, I decided to take the thruway up, stop by the Carousel Mall, and check out the store.

It's nice, and has an excellent selection of comics and board games. There's ample space in the back of the store to play games with lots of windows to let the light in (the mortal enemy of all gamers). It's a shame it's located in the mall where floorspace is at a premium, I'd like to see what they could do with an even bigger store. Or maybe I'm just spoiled by how our FLGS can house 30+ tables any given day.

There were no board games being played (looks like I was a day early), so I headed out and back to Rochester.

Wednesday

Despite the name of this list, I didn't really get a whole lot of games played until our regularly scheduled game night on Wednesday. The first game we play is Klunker. I'm trying to envision how fun it would be to be a used-car salesman, but much to my surprise it's about collecting sets of jewelry. Something must be lost in translation.

I also wonder if people's reaction to the game will follow the same path it did for me. It starts off as not all that interesting, then someone mentions "it's by Uwe Rosenberg", and you're all like "Oh! That's cool!". Then it ends as not all that interesting.

I didn't do too well, but I'm not sure what I could have done differently. Overall, it's a nice game, but not one I'm anxious to play again.

The next game that gets played it Tobago. I've been bringing this to game nights for a few months now, but never got anyone to bite. Everyone at the table is new to the game, so I run through the rules and we're off. One of the player's says "I can tell I'm going to like this game already".

None of my treasure cards seem advantageous, so I relocated my ATV to the center of the board. I'm confident that I will adopt a "grab all the medallions" strategy, assuming it will be overlooked with all new players. Unfortunately for me, I'm wildly inefficient with my movements, to the point where opponents on the same terrain as me are moving along much faster. Not to mention my horrible luck with the treasure draws. While I'm hoarding medallions, I'm waiting for the perfect moment to use them. Waiting for that moment meant I was waiting too long, and as the game neared end-game, I was dumping them to chase after what coin I could.

The game ends with me holding onto five treasure cards, none of which have a value higher than four. Still, it's an incredibly fun experience which feels like a cross between a deduction game and a push-your-luck game. Not to mention that it's incredibly beautiful when all set up.

I'm not a word guy. Heck, I'll admit I'm not much of a "reader". But with a few people stopping by later in the evening, we needed a quick filler as we waited for them.

First, this game is crazy with eight people. You never go around more than once, so if you end up with J/X/LY/P in your initial hand, you'd better be prepared to make a word with it.

Second, since I don't play word games, this has never come up for me. But "tee" is not the spelling of the letter "T", "T" is the spelling of the letter "T". I don't care what the dictionary says. You scrabble players with your made up words.

This game was pretty popular the whole week. For this game I was the only one who had played it before, so I blew through the rules (we were running out of time). A few people pointed out that the game felt a little like Puerto Rico, but shorter. I see the similarity thematically, but I really enjoy how much lighter Endeavor feels.

I found myself more concerned with helping others understand the rules, and remembering them myself, that I wasn't paying too much attention to my initial moves. I just know I ended up with a ridiculously large population by turn four, so I tried out a military strategy. This didn't work very well, since another player was doing the same thing. For some reason, we felt the need to go for the same points, thus canceling each other out. We also had to end early after turn six because the store was closing.

Still, I was glad to play the game, especially with Keith, a fellow father-of-a-toddler that is just looking to get games off his unplayed list.

Thursday

To set up a precedent, I never get to attend the Thursday group. An excellent group of guys, but there's no way I can get out two nights in a row and not throw off our kids' nighttime routine. So I was thrilled to be able to attend that Thursday.

The first game we play is Nuns on the Run(s). Wow this game is fun, just don't take it too seriously. Also, I doubt very highly that it was played straight, the line of sight rules are tough.

Two highlights for me: Steve goes "yup, you saw me", puts his player out. The Abbess takes her move towards him, and he goes "let me see those instructions". One minute later "never mind, you don't see me". Everyone starts cracking up. This happens to this guy at least three more times.

The next one comes from me. I walk ALL the way to my secret wish, then say "wait, I need the key first". The Abbess and Prioress are in the Chapel with my key. But I know their paths, and I wait outside the door for them to leave. The first novice after me makes a noise in the room. The other Novices after him decide to make a run for it, in LOS of the nuns, THROUGH MY DOOR! As they bowl me over, the Abbess gets a special surprise: instead of catching the two running novices, she finds a third stupid enough to be listening at the door.

Lesson learned. And an incredibly good time.

I requested this get played. I figured it would be a quick filler, and the six left over from Nuns needed to pull in a seventh. Interestingly enough, that seventh player had demoed this game multiple times at GenCon last year. With as much luck as this one had, it didn't matter too much.

The thing you don't expect about this game is how long it takes to end. Once your horse gets one or two spaces away, that's when the "move back" cards start flying. Overall, a bit random, but entertaining as long as you go into it with the right mindset.

By the way, yes, it was my number 2 that was SO close to the end before getting nailed with move back cards. Having him "show" wasn't bad though.

This was the last game of the night.

This was only my second time with the game, so I decide to follow the same strategy I stumbled upon the first time. I claim the majority of cities near the action space, and do my best to hold onto the multiplier path the whole game. I'm pretty sure one of the players was ready to punch me out, since the majority of my moves were to block any and all paths down there.

Before we knew it, I was racking up the points. Sure, I hadn't made too many improvements on my own board, but once I hit twenty points, it was too late. It was over before it even started, and I got my first win of the week.

I'm not too sure what to think of it. On one hand, it seems supremely balanced, with multiple paths to victory. There's also a ridiculous amount of screw-age for a Euro. I'm shocked at how polarizing it is. One of the guys at the table looked miserable the whole time, and I know a few people who refuse to ever play this one again.

Friday

Friday was the day I was having people over at my place. I took the day off of work, got everything cleaned up, and set up multiple tables. Fifteen people confirmed they were coming throughout the day, including folks I hadn't played with in a long time.

The first game we played was Camelot Legends. Rik said he was going to be demoing multiple Z-Man games in the coming months, and he wanted to do a quick run through of this one while people were showing up.

The artwork is fantastic, but it's hard for me to comment on the game itself. We only played the basic game, and it seemed a little too simple. There's also a LOT of information on the cards and on the table at any given point. I don't even remember who won this one, but we put it aside as others showed up.

Now this one had been on my to-play list for a while. I love worker placement, and I love the theme. It took a while to get through the rules, which are deceptively difficult considering the small rulebook.

First thing's first, we played this one wrong. I should have trusted the rulebook, but one of the player aids showed a picture of a house and a road next to buildings that come with houses. Of course, I decided that having a picture of the road meant you get a road with the free house. Playing it that way, we never had to take the road action. Big mistake. We also didn't place plots ala Catan at the setup.

The one thing I did remember, though, was reading an article saying how unbalanced it was to pass early the turn prior to endgame, and claim the Sheriff for the $5/VP spot. So I did that. Then I decided to pass, keeping all my cowboys in inventory to protect my buildings. Of course, someone points out to me that I need to place the cowboys in the buildings in order to protect them. Ooops, wasted turn.

Glad I got to play it, though it's hard to comment on with how misplayed it was. This one is in desperate need of a rules overhaul.

We played this one with a newbie. And what do you know, they won! This one is a hard one to do a session report with. I remember a few key points though:

* My scores in the three rounds were: 14-15-11

* I had one too many.

* I spilled beer all over my score tiles while chanting "Ra!"

* I spilled beer again over my score tiles while chanting "Ra!"

Ah, the second play of Endeavor for the week. We had a few of the same players from Wednesday night who wanted to actually play a full game.

This time, I did better. I found myself in advantageous positions for collecting cards. This led me to rely too heavily on the card strategy, and I petered out towards the end. This game also showed me how brutal it can be. Why did I ever call this game "light"?

One player adopted the same military strategy I tried Wednesday, but was doing it effectively. So effectively, in fact, that he was systematically picking apart every player on the board, even preying on the weak. Maybe it was getting a bit late, but this one was a little too tense, and the evening was starting to wear down.

So the logical progression after a tense game of Endeavor is Vasco de Gama! Right?! This was my first time playing this, and my brain hurt. It just did. Carson City, Ra, Endeavor: where was my mindless filler?!

My first impression after hearing the rules was: I was dead. Seriously, I need to not only think about what action to take, but what order I want to take it in? And other people can ahead of me if they want? This was one of the reasons Leonardo da Vinci pissed me off so much!

But I was surprised. The game's central mechanic (picking spots then picking order) was not as brain-burning as I thought it would be. With the second to last turn finished, I found myself with a bunch of boats ready to sail. So I figured I'd block up that action in the last turn. Ended up working for me, because by the time people figured out what I was doing, it was too late. I grabbed an entire shipping lane for myself, got the bonus points, and the victory.

Overall, it was pretty fun. It has a nice central mechanic, but I'd like to see if it has several strategies to victory. Right now it seems like we're all building toward the same thing.

I don't know why I played this. I never had before, and it was 1am. I think I won, and I couldn't tell you how. We blew through the rules, played the game to completion, there was something about these little shields and how they scored. We put it away, and it was time to crash.

Lessons learned from my first major game day/night at my place:

* When the guy says a sub platter is for 15 people, remember that gamers count as 30 people. Pizza acts as an excellent backup.

* Beer makes every game better, but cardboard chits shake in fear around it.

* You'll never be able to play a game with everybody there. Just try to have fun, and make sure everybody else is having fun.

Saturday

Two game nights, then one game day at my place, you'd think I'd had enough. No sir. Besides, I couldn't miss the RBS game day at Millennium, it only happens once a month!

The first game I break out is Nuns on the Run. I wanted to see how this would play with a more random, "public" group.

Wow, what a difference. First, a few people were having trouble with the rules. Forget line of site, just the concept of picking your movement, then revealing the location. Plus, I can't count the number of times I heard "do they see me? I'm at (give away location)".

Guess what, the Abbess and Prioress won! It was humorous only in how futile it was.

I love Power Grid, I love Power Grid!!

Six players, Germany. Pure gaming bliss. How high do I go for that windmill? What if something better doesn't come down. Do I build? Do I wait?

Ultimately, I got locked out of the end. It wasn't a great power plant, and it was going for way too much. But it was the only sure thing that would power enough cities to trigger endgame. I risked it, I let it pass through my fingers, hoping for a better plant to come down, and I lost.

And that's the best thing about this game. You can pinpoint the exact moment where you lost. You're building up your engine, trying to keep up with everyone, but the choice of when to abstain is just as important. It's a beautifully elegant system that I'm still trying to figure out.

Did I mention I love Power Grid?

And I ended it all with one more go-around with Endeavor. This time, I focused on architecture and tried to bum-rush the Cartographer. It seemed like one of the more powerful buildings in my previous playthroughs.

Unfortunately, my tactic didn't work. Sure I got the cartographer, but I underestimated how filled up the board can get in a five-player game. By the end of the game, I didn't need it, and it was a wasted action.

In terms of determining efficient actions, this is really a game you have to think at least a turn ahead at all times. It's addicting, and really deceptively deep. I'm glad I got to play it as much as I did.

---

After the game, I headed home. It had been years since I had as much free time as I did that week. While fun, that afternoon I really started to miss my family. Sure, there was a point in my life where this week wouldn't have been special, it would have been typical. But that time is gone, and you know what, that's ok. Besides, I forgot why I got into this hobby in the first play. The social interaction, the shared challenge, and being able to have an encapsulated and fulfilling experience that I can fit into my tight schedule.

I was thrilled to see my boys when they returned on Sunday. And I was reminded about how much I can't wait to share these experiences with them when they get older. And my wife, while we may not have the time to sit over a game of Arkham Horror anymore, there's really no other person I'd rather sit at a table and share a game with.
