I'd heard such great things about this game. Atmosphere, storytelling, theme - everything I love in a game. What I got was a TON of die rolling. "Roll once to see if each soldier in your squad inhales. Now roll again to see if he exhales. Now roll again to see if he needs to go to the bathroom." This is probably one of the single most miserable gaming experiences I have ever had. Thanks, but I'll stick with Medal of Honor: Allied Assault and let the computer do all the tedious "die rolling" for me.

I'd watched groups of gamers play Funkenschlag original edition many times at SoCal Games Days. They would sit there for hours huddled around this weird home-made looking game with lots of pieces. I avoided it like the plague. Then Power Grid was released to raves of gamers. It quickly rose to the top of the rankings. The other day I had a chance to grudgingly try it. I was expecting a heavy, dry, long game. I was wrong. Power Grid is extremely elegant, very simple to learn, and it plays smoothly for the amount of depth it contains. One of my favorites.

I put this game on my trade list, mainly because I thought the artwork looked great. I expected a half baked game that would sit on my shelf and probably never get played. I was pleasantly surprised to find a very fun beer and pretzels card-based wargame in the box with some very interesting mechanics. Each player plays BOTH sides of the conflict while secretly holding alliance with one side. It's a balancing act between revealing your alliance and scoring too many points for the opposition. A great game.

A Leo Colvini game. Totally not my style. Abstract, light on theme. But I got talked into playing it. It is tense, exciting, and the great artwork and components create a nice atmosphere.

Pirateer is one of the most reviled games on the 'net. It has seriously awful ratings here on the 'Geek. But I got a copy of the deluxe edition as a gift. Finally got around to trying it after years on the shelf. It's actually a really fun little game. It's along the same lines as backgammon, but the theme works and the components are incredible. It's very, very light, but it is simple fun especially with a child. I think a lot of the noise about it is due to an infamous flame war with the designer.

Sauron - the final chapter in Knizia's Lord of the Rings game masterpiece. I looked forward to this game like almost no other. I won't say too much about it since I pick on this game a lot, but it totally ruins the game in my opinion. I really looked forward to being able to play Sauron as a human, but it just ended up being no fun at all.

This is one of my very first game purchases upon getting back into the hobby. It looked like a real departure from old style games like Monopoly, Clue, etc. It was a departure, but not in a good way. There are some interesting things going on in the game, but it just ends of going forever. A really bad game that from all appearances looks like it would be a really great game. Never judge a book by its cover.

A German fantasy game? I don't think so. The Germans can't do fantasy - that's the province of the Americans! Wrong. Return of the Heroes blends elegant German mechanics with a rich American style fantasy theme. Excellent, excellent game.

Already chimed in about this one on the "Longest, Most Painfully Painful Game" list, but to make a long story short - my friend and I (greatly) anticipated a reasonably interesting twist on the original with some fantasy elements to spice things up, and what we got was...over two hours of staring at the rules and pieces before we admitted we just didn't have a clue as to how to get started, and gave up. And I've finished games of DIVINE RIGHT, WHITE BEAR AND RED MOON/DRAGON PASS, and KING MAKER, multiple times each thankyouverymuch, so I do not feel I am one to give up on a game lightly...

I read about this game somewhere on the 'net. Possibly here. Anyway, it sounded great. Sounded like it might play out a lot like civilization-building computer games--complete with "watch it unfold" drama.

Instead, it stunk. It was totally dry and abstract and everyone played so tightly that the game wasn't fun and was always won by the person who made the last move to end the game.

I gave it away in a batch of games I didn't care for--via a contest right here on BGG.

This one hurt even more than Clans.

I love maps and games with maps. I thought that a route-ownership game through the streets of Paris would be a wonderful little diversion. Even after playing a couple of times, I was still trying to convince everyone (and myself) that the game had merit. But, ultimately, I realized that I was kidding myself. It really isn't a very good game.

I gave it away (not Clans, as I had thought) in the BGG contest. I gave away Clans at the Gathering.

Published by Steve Jackson, artwork by Phil Foglio, and a box that reads 'Greed is good'. Sounds great, doesn't it? And it's really cheap when compared to other Steve Jackson games.
But then you open the box...

You get a flimsy paper playing field(don't you dare to call it a board!) with twelve colorfull squares, and six identical decks of 30 cards, one for each player. You play your cards to get from square 1 to 12 and back again, first one back wins...

This is a pityfull excuse for a boardgame, and the theme has absolutely nothing to do with it. Where's the greed? Where's the dungeon delving experience? Why can my barely dressed sorceress do exactly the same things as that undergrown dwarf with a huge battle axe? Why do these dragons pop up like mushrooms on every turn?

This 'game' is definately not what you expect to get.

I had been looking forward to this game for years, and finally got a chance to play it with friends. I found it for $20 when the local Wizards of the Coast store was going out of business. After opening it I was even more excited - a nice board, great bits, and the rules just sounded great. Simultaneous movement, negotiation, backstabbing combined with the need for cooperation - what more could you want?

Apparently we wanted fun too. We found the planning phase to be dry, the rules overly confusing and the whole experience just fell flat for us. It's the kind of game that may get better with more experience, but we just couldn't bring ourselves to finish the first game, let along play others. Probably my most disappointing boardgame experience to date.
