Over time I have played a few long games and when I finish (or often, fail to finish due to time constraints) I think that this is a game that I would really not like to sit hit the table during a regular game night but which would be fun to play at a convention.

The difference to me is that the convention atmosphere lends itself to blocking off several hours with friends or strangers to tackling these games without getting concerned about opportunity cost too much. Sometimes after a long day of playing several games, settling into a long game is actually a welcome change of pace.

Another consideration for a convention games is the number of players required to play. Sometimes a convention is the only place where enough willing participants can be found.

Please add games that you really only play or would only play at a convention for whatever reason.

This is the first game I ever designated as a convention game. It is also one I have played at a convention, Origins 2008. It worked really well, too. We started setting up around 8 pm and were done playing by 1 am or so.

There were 6 of us and I had never played with so many before either, so that was quite a bonus because it turned into a good way to get to know people. Playing it drew a fair share of attention too. People were pretty impressed that we were willing to commit to such a long game. But that's part of the point of a convention is busting out impressive games.

Wandering back to our hotel room after Twilight Imperium, we saw the Werewolf people still going strong and we thought we would join in. Its hard for me to imagine another place where dozens of people, let alone the 11 to 15 that formed each game, would gather to play this game and it really is a ton of fun with so many.

Our second game we had an hour long opening round with a lot of staring people in the face and seriously asking "Are you a werewolf?" It was really odd and a little frustrating, but when I made it to the end and helped root out the last werewolf, it was worth it. It was also worth falling into bed at 4 am.

This is my poster child for opportunity cost games. Whenever I play this, about a half hour in I start thinking about all the other game I could play in the three hours I played this one. It certainly didn't help that my last game was with 8 players.

However, I'd like to think that at a convention I could simply settle in and enjoy the story playing out on the board. It's really the only way I see my self playing it again.

That said, there must be something about this game because I still find myself thinking about buying expansions for this game. I must be sick in the head.

I haven't actually played this yet, but I'm throwing it out there because my gut tells me it will fit. The immersive storytelling, like Arkham Horror, is something that appeals to me but usually gets overridden by my limited time to play games. My hope is that the convention environment will wash away those time concerns and allow me to really enjoy the unfolding narrative.

I picked this up several months ago and recently have been itching to play it. Maybe I'll get an opportunity at GenCon this summer.

This game was what actually inspired the list. I played it for the first time last month. Both times we didn't make it out of Age I because of time considerations.

This is a game that I'm definitely willing to make the time commitment to see all the way through. I'm interested to see what strategies work across all three ages. Definitely, my current go-to convention game.

Lots of board games could fit as a convention game, but I'm fairly new to the war game scene and I've been dying to play Here I Stand for years. I would happily play it any time and anywhere, but I think my best chance is at a convention.

Part of the difficulty is the length of the game. However, I think the larger hurdle is finding six players willing and able to play. My group has been trying to put together five players for Napoleonic Wars and it has not been easy. I imagine finding a sixth would only be tougher. I know the game could be played with fewer, but it seems that six is optimal overall and the best way to learn the game...maybe I'm wrong about that.

Now, I know that I can play this and many other games online. My problem is that the extra layer of removal from the game created by the computer interface makes it really difficult for me to keep up in a game I don't know, especially one as complex as this. I'm willing to play online once I know a game, but I really like to learn games face-to-face.
