A busy meet - great to see how many people can be squeezed into a mid-sized conference room. Notable for the 100th WABA member, and a number of games both great to look at and to play (incl Starwars: Queens Gambit, War of the Roses, Epic Commands and Colors Ancients and Descent).

A warm-up game between Barbara, Keith, Lauren and me with Lauren and I teaching. It was an AP heavy affair, but that's to be expected in a teaching game. A tie in the end between Barbara and Keith for 1st place.

Vanilla Descent. A learning game for all (Barbara, Lauren, Keith,Ian and me), as I had only had a few solo runs at home prior to this. A runaway victory for the heroes as the Overlord (me) failed to get consistent spawn cards until the last 2 rounds of the game. Keith's undead hero's Command ability, coupled with Lauren's hero's falcon, made all but the end level 'boss' only slight inconveniences in their inexorable march to dungeon dominance. A good learning experience which I'd like to have another crack at the next time I have four hours to kill!

Started the day with this one as a learning game with Katie, JM and a Tim/Thomas player combo.

A great little filler that is now a part of the WABA collection. I snuck away in the last race with Thomas' help to snatch victory.

Steveg was interested in playing this one, so he'd read up on the rules, and taught Rob, me and another chap.

We had a couple of games. I like it well enough that I'll play it if asked, and not run screaming like I would from Power Grid.

Andy, Stephen, Steve, Terry, and I played an all rounds, five player game of this.

Was a very tough battle throughout with the power swinging in all directions, compliments of some clever moves and some cleverly nasty moves.

In the end the first three places were spread over just three points, with Terry and Stephen covering second and third (not sure who finished where) and me winning.

A great game between Nixon (Michael) and myself (JFK).

A bit of luck and issue control early on lead to JFK running away at the debates winning all three issues which dealt a mortal wound to the Nixon campaign. Nixon did well to recover and on election day Nixon came out with votes in the lower 200s whilst JFK managed to scrape over 300 even with the unpledged electors from the South.

History did indeed repeat itself.

A teaching game as none of us knew it.
Michael with Effie (?) vs Thomas vs Chris vs myself in this game of world domination. All of us agreed this was way better than Risk.

We played the Premium version, not including the special rules for the cards and the game was fun but would be even more fun with the cards. I managed to eek out a victory after claiming and holding onto 6 energy sources for 2 turns to get me to the 40 VPs required. The battle for North America looked to be over until a coalition of Thomas and Michael with Supreme Commander Effie made a major move and disrupted Atlantic convoys.

The most enjoyable battle was the battle for the Middle East / Northern Africa where the major forces of Michael and Effie went for a showdown with myself. In the end, all but 2 units were destroyed with the defenders the victors but a peace treaty was created due to the toll on our forces.

Fun game, better than Risk.

Arausio.

8 player match up. Rogerus leading the quick thinking Roman legions (Warren, Andy, Terry) vs Gregorix leading the Tribe of 3 Steves.

The battle started with a light calvary skirmish on the Roman left. Poor rolling by Warren resulted in Roman disarray.

In contrast, Terry on the Roman right repelled a calvary charge and pushed his legionnaires forward.

Then the warriors in the barbarian centre charged their opposite number driving a wedge between the centre general and his medium infantry.

By this time the barbarians were 8 banners to Roman 6.

The Roman centre and right infantry then double timed into the mass of warriors picking up banners. Warren rallied on the left and managed to eliminate a light calvary after having surrounded it for a few turns.

The Romans finished things off with clash of shields - the centre general and its attached heavy infantry steam rolled the warriors in the centre.

Romans won 13 banners to 9. (despite poor shuffling handing 3 x First Strikes to the Barbarian Supreme Commander) shake

Paul and Ernest (Trade Federation) vs Roger and Owen (Naboobians)

Nail biting tense finish. Darth Maul had killed the 2 jedi and was scything through the palace guards. A palace guard downed Darth Maul with a lucky shot resulting in 5 bonus cards. One of these bonus cards and good rolling allowed Annakin to slip through and shut down the droids for a narrow Naboo victory. cool

Four of us finished the day with two games of this one from the WABA collection.

It's a good short fun game, especially the bit where you throw back your screen to reveal the body you have constructed on your lab slab and announce "It's alive" at the end to claim your victory.

Oh, almost forgot that Lauren and I warmed up with a quick game of Blue Moon. The Buka (Lauren) vs the Flit (me). I love this game and consider myself to be a reasonable player, but I cannot win with the Flit. This proved to be another exercise in frustration as my hand was clogged with useless retrievables as the Buka loaded their ships and pummeled the birds into a 4-0 submissioncry.

"Now is the winter of our discontent made glorious summer by this son of York."

I played a great learning game of this recent addition to my collection. I taught this Australian designed area control/blind bidding game to JM, Katie, and Tim.

This is not a war game, it is a game about a war.

It manages to bring forth the feel of chaos and familial treachery that is characteristic of the period very well. This is a team game with two people as York and the other two Lancaster, but the team members are NOT allowed to consult each other about tactics.

Being a new game there were a few rules we had to clarify but that didn't hurt play and the gaming experience was great fun. This is a very very good game. Most victory points went to Tim who took a well played win. Everyone enjoyed themselves and got into the spirit of the game. "a horse a horse, my kingdom for a horse".

I will be certianly teaching and playing this visually stunning and well designed very playable game again soon.

My first game with the WABA was Smallworld - and a very good introduction it was!

Andrew, Aidan, Stephen, Helen and I were playing, first time for those last three. (Hope i got all the names right).

Really enjoyed this (possibly helped by my fortifying wizards and wealthy ratmen eking out a victory) and look forward to playing again!

Played Andrew's brand new copy of Chaos in the Old World. First time playing for me also, while Paul and Tim had played before (again - hope i got the names right).
Enjoyed this a lot - although it seems to take a while to play due to the need to resolve everything in a strict order.

With the different units, powers and victory conditions of each player it was amazing how close the finish was.
Not sure how close Khorne was - I suspect probably only 1 or 2 dial advancements from victory. But in the same turn Nurgle had a victory point win, Tzeentch had a dial win and I am pretty sure Slaanesh could have got two dial advancements to also get a dial win (we didn't get time to finish that final turn unfortunately).
So at least 3 out of the 4 players all managed to meet the victory conditions in the same turn - with Tzeentch winning on a victory point tie breaker!
