Rules. Do's and Don'ts. Laws. Game-playing norms. Whatever name you call them by, rules are a necessary part of any game-playing experience. Yes, I'm the game-explainer for our group. Yes, I am immediately handed the rule book after any game is opened. Yes, I arbitrate rules disputes during all games played in our group, and yes, I'm the guy who was called too "rulesy" during a game of Cranium, for crying out loud.

So below are a sampling of some of the rules that I think add to each game's playing experience, or are just plain funny. Please add some more of your favorites.

I wonder if Rummikub would sell more if it put its Spiel des Jahr award on the box.

That aside, the rules mandate a two minute limit for anyone's turn. I call it the "brother-in-law" clause, because mine has a semi-severe case of AP. Having a limit in the rules really helps keep this one moving along.

Also funny is that Rummikub bills itself as the "Fast-moving Rummy Tile Game" but is actually so slow moving that it has to artificially graft the desired speed into the ruleset. That grafting saves the game, and so makes the list.

I'd like to add this same rule to some other games I have (I'm eyeballing you, Power Grid)

Carcassonne's tiebreak is much beloved in our humble home: All tied players rejoice in their shared victory. Without this rule, we would be anguishing in our shared inability to overcome one another, but this reminds us to keep looking on the sunny side of life.

This game is sweet because it allows you to cheat right there in the rules! I don't even know why they bothered to print any other rules because if you can cheat you don't have to follow any of them. An anarchist's delight!

But seriously, who among us hasn't wished to add a few VPs to the stack or take a quick discount when paying for something? Usually I am held back by honor and conscience, but Illuminati lets me just throw those in the trash in exchange for a quick leg up. Really fun!

The awesome-est rule in this game doubles as the most awesomely useless component ever printed: the carriage house. Why do you need a little card to stack your carriages on? I have no idea. Maybe the Seyfarths are a little uncomfortable with allowing players the freedom to stack carriages wherever they wish. Who needs carriages stacked willy-nilly anyway? I can't think of a greater threat to emerging Bavarian society....

This game's tiebreaker rule is as creative as the one in Carcassonne.

"In case of a victory point tie, the player that slayed the most monsters wins.
If there is still a tie, Fireside Games recommends players arrange for a duel of swords at dawn..."

Fortunately, we have yet to see a tie.

This one certainly added to my own playing exprience. Just think what value there would be if more players encountered it much earlier in their explorations.

Before beginning the game, players should become familiar with the following important information.

otherwise known as "read the rules before you try to play" ???

This rule applies to more games than this headline example:

"Not only the whining and general complain is allowed but also encouraged as life is not fair you know"

This is not word-to-word exact sentence of the example game but you can find smt. similar from many rulebooks...and for the good...as introducting this (or similar) rule always lightens up the game group.

Rule "8.1.3 If DEFCON 1 is reached, nuclear war breaks out and the game ends immediately. The phasing player is responsible for the status marker moving to DEFCON 1, and loses the game."

Not only does it drive the theme home, nothing is more chilling than to have a player accidentally end the game this way.

Martin Wallace is quite candid in several of his latest game rules. I, for one, enjoy it.
