I'm sure you other nerds do this too. My wife is currently 11 weeks pregnant and already I'm thinking about what games I can teach the baby. Yeah, I realize that it's gonna be a while before I can play any sort of games with him/her, but still, help me pick out some games way before it's time!

I'll get it started with a few games I'm excited about (Thanks to Tom Vasel and The Dice Tower). Please add games that your kids love!

Cool pieces and I hear that dexterity games can be pretty equally matched between adults and kids

A game that looks like it will appeal to kids for the theme and that looks like could be pretty fun for me to play too.

Don't underestimate the value of Candy Land - the theme is very exciting for a 2-1/2 to 3 year old, and it teaches taking turns, following a simple rule set, color recognition, and winning conditions. It's actually a great game for this age!

Hey, That's My Fish! is an okay abstract game that doesn't really grab me much, but I made a variant ruleset so I can play it with my 2-1/2 year old, and he loves it so much and gets so excited, I really enjoy playing it with him.

laugh

It's a 2-player variant - you would need more penguins or equally cool penguin substitutes to play with more people. You put all the tiles in a bag. Each turn, players take one tile from the bag, and for every fish on your tile, you put a penguin on it - so if your tile has 3 fish, you put 3 penguins on it. If the tile has 1 fish, you get to put 1 penguin on it, etc. You do this until you run out of penguins, and whoever has the most penguins wins the game. So your kid has to be able to count and identify up to 3 objects, be able to take turns, and understand a very simple rule set. Makes a great game for the really really young ones... My boy wants to play it over and over and over and over and over and over again...

Max is a co-op game for young kids.

My 4 year old son LOVES this game and thinks it is VERY exciting!!! OH. MY. GOSH.

He would rate it a 10 because he can't imagine not wanting to play it forever, but I do know he'll outgrow it at some point. In the meantime, we'll play 5 games in a row, and he'd keep on playing it if we would... A totally awesome cooperative game for the very younger crowd. It's amazing how exciting and tense this game is for really young kids...

Superb, simply superb.

You'd only want to play this with a young youngster though, because man alive, this is real boring for a an adult, and a kid of 5 or 6 will have outgrown it.

But by the time they outgrow this, they'll be ready for Castle Panic, another co-op that's great for your 5 or 6 year o9ld, and one you'll have fun one with too@!!!!!

My 2 year old daughter has been playing (and loving) this game for the last 4 months. Since it's also mass-market, you should be able to find it cheaply (I got mine for $2 at a garage sale).

My son is almost five months old, and he was born this past December. For Christmas, my wife did a TON of research to try and find the board game that children can play at the absolute earliest age. She did this because she knew I would want to play games with our son and she wanted to make sure I could attempt it as early as possible. In the end she gave me two games, Go Away Monster (already on the list) and then this one.

My three year old likes to play this using his rules. He arranges the shapes and colors on the board to create his own patterns. This is a great way for him to develop his spatial relation abilities and for him to become comfortable with games. (Warning: you do need to closely observe young children with this one since there are small pieces that are a choking hazard.)

For 3-year-olds.
Very simple rules and no decision - only learning colors, taking turns and following the rules. It goes like this:
You are trying to make rabbits escape from the rabbit hole. Yopu can roll one of the 5 colors of the exits; when it's rolled you place a rabbit on the doorstep. When this color is rolled again you can take the rabbit. The 6th side of the die allows you take the rabbit right from the hole. And that's it, the most rabbits collected wins.

And it has funny rabbits!
