I know this list is not that timely. First I just wanted to record this one for myself. I have tried 35 of the games published in 2009 by now. Mostly I liked them with only a few exceptions.

The first page of this list is about these games. You can comment why you agree or why you think I'm a stupid to think a game is good when it's terrible.

The second page is about the games I still would like to try. You can tell me why I should avoid them based on the first page or why I should choose one to be the next one I try.

The third page is for your suggestions: If you think there are other games not listed that I should try (published in 2009 according to BGG) based on my opinions in the first page.

The surprise winner (for me at least). Complex rules and rulebook, like an AT, with the mechanism of an euro, combining simultaneous action selection, worker placement and a logic puzzler. Add lots of fun (funny graphics and text) and a good theme to the mix, and you have the winner of last year.

It's just technically an expansion. It's a different game from the original and it's a far better one. The original is a good gateway and family game, but this version is up to the standards of the best middleweight Knizias. Without added rules complexity it makes each decision a lot harder while the luck factor is a lot smaller. I really like it.

A really enjoyable medium light worker placement game. Nothing new but a refreshing mix of previously used ideas, a mix of strategy and tactics, short-time and long-time planning, taking risk and so on.

#4Dominion: Seaside

Knows what Intrigue knows but adds lots of possibilities for planning.

STATUS: NOT OWN (hoping for a Hungarian version)

#5Dominion: Intrigue

Dominion was a good-but-not-great, innovative game with a good replayability. Intrigue improves it a lot, making the game as good as it should have been the first time. More interaction, also more decision to be made with your hand (not only 'which action cards should I buy for my next hands?'), also some cards that make even victory cards useful. Really nice one.

Samurai is the greatest "designer's game" I know. Of course this one can't be as good - it's simpler, it has a little bit more luck involved, and an oversized box and oversized game area so it's better to be played on the floor - but it's still really good.

Shares some features with Stefan Feld's previous Alea game (In the Year of the Dragon) but it's surprisingly more fun with an innovative use of dice. The best new 'buy and activate buildings that allow you do special actions' game in a while.

A quality Hans im Gl├╝ck game that gets better and better with each play. A surprise hit at home as well (I bought about 15 games in the last quarter of 2009 but it's by far the most played one) : of course it has colorful bits, fruits to be collected, but it's also quite cutthroat actually.

It might be too complex and too long for its own good, but its 'A-B' mechanism is just ridiculously great. Try it to know what I'm talking about.

I like Keltis and especially like it since I saw its success with family. This one feels like a portable and faster version of the game: I miss the clover leaf effects but it adds some other tactical possibilities instead. A fine version and while it's Lost Cities: The Board Game: The Card Game, it's really different from Lost Cities.

I love Ra, I tried Ra just before Essen and that might be the very reason I bought Priests of Ra as well at the fair. It's like Ra but with different scoring so different collection tactics. It adds variety if you've played the original a lot, at the same time I think the original has a more interesting combination of scoring possibilities.

I like math. This game is about math. If you're not a math geek I'm not sure you'll like it. If you want the "building connections" part of Power Grid you'll be really disappointed.

Fine combination of little aims, trying to find the best locations in networks, often kicking others from their places, a game with a weak pasted-on theme that might be a bit more complex than fun but it's not bad. I just don't love it as much as the average geek.

The missing link between Bohnanza and Agricola: it's more fun and colorful, also lighter than Agricola while it's more complex and a lot longer but less interactive than Bohnanza. It's a fine game with some great ideas but it goes a bit longer than it should.

I think this game is underrated mainly because it's an Ystari release and people were expecting something of an Ystari complexity. I think it's a really fine game with nice touches, nice elephants and its shortness adds a lot to the tension (the tension I like in games).

I'm not an AT player but I loved the Fighting Fantasy books as a kid. This one brings back those old memories even if it's a lot more random than that. And it shouldn't be played with more than 4 players.

#22 FITS

It's of course Tetris: The Board game but what is different from Tetris makes it work. One is having each tiles only once (so you can count on them) and another one is the possibility of not placing a tile you don't want to (taking risk/planning). A hit with the family, even if it has virtually no interaction. (So... let's make it more interactive!)

#23 FITS official expansion

Nice tricky boards, they are fun to play.

#24 Battle for Olympus
And another computer game-related Knizia: this one was available as an online game before it was picked up by Nestorgames to be published. I liked playing it online, a fine abstract strategy spiced up with variable powers.

#25 Thunderstone

If you prefer fantasy theme over the usual Euro theme of Dominion this one might be better for you. I found it to be a bit more repetitive, less interesting version of Dominion. Not bad but not great either.

#26 Dice Town

Funny, a bit maybe longer than it should be, a fine and innovative dice game, a longish filler with a good graphic design.

#27 Cubiko

I have played it with the designer in Essen and he almost made me buy it. It's an enjoyable and fun "dexterity tic tac toe" that's actually not even that expensive for its contents but quite expensive compared to how often I would like to play it.

I was part of the testing group of this one and I'm still proud of my suggestions that made the cut. I'm not sure if the final published version of the game is the best version I have played though but I'm happy I could take part in the development process.

And now the only two games I really didn't like that much:

#29 Tulipmania 1637

It's got a strong theme but finally after an hour of play the end comes fast and sudden, making it quite luck dependent and random who wins (or so it feels).

I could sense a sense of humor in this game... but I couldn't sense a good game in there,

+1
I just can't rank this one with the others: it's really an expansion (unlike the expansions listed above) that just fine-tunes the game with its cards - and does that pretty well. I haven't tried the warehouses part though, that doesn't seem to be as interesting but later I will.

Children's games should be rated/ranked separately from the adult games.

C#1 Zoowaboo

A really good idea (trying to estimate if the animals fit in the boat or not), fine rules, good quality: this one is a winner!

C#2 Wolkenbilder

Create the shape of the objects and animals seen on cards; the others can guess what can be seen. Light and fun.

C#3 Razzo Raketo

This game is more fun than it has any right to be. Also it's more expensive than you'd expect from a game that's about hiding objects in the room and later trying to find them.

C#4 Larry Lasso

A dexterity game that teaches colors as well: get the bandits in the colors rolled and pull them in the jail with your lassoes!
