We had a bunch of people gather together for our last monthly game day for a while. We intend to pick it back up in September, so be on the lookout for that. In the meantime (June, July, August), the Third Saturday Gaming Festival will be held at Mark and Sidney's house.

Thanks to everyone who made the last 31 game days in a row excellent!

On to the games:

We decided to play a little bit of Crokinole, because as everyone knows, the best way to make more people show up is to just get started in a game. Sure enough...

This game caused Ashley pain. Her finger hurt from flicking the discs. Her head hurt from having to try tough shots. Her soul hurt from being forced to play this. Plus other people did start showing up, so we called the game early to prevent Ashley from dying.

Game 2:

Sorceror:
Lisa
Tim

Gabe liked the game so much that he ordered it from Time Well Spent on his phone while we were playing. It didn't hurt that they were crushing us for most of the game.

Then, the Sorceror got tough. Taking his last hit point of damage required 14 hits! Even that didn't make it super close though.

I made a joke in our game about as long as Ashley could carry my dead weight we would be fine. Unfortunately, even I underestimated the deadness of my weight. I had many many hands in which a Queen or less was my highest card. And in one memorable hand, I had 1-4, 6-9, 2, 4, 6, 8, Jack, and Queen.

This was a ridiculously close game of Neuland. When the score was 9-9-8, Will came within one action point of winning on his turn. Then Jeff couldn't quite win on his turn, but he still could easily win on his next turn (which still came before William's next turn). But then I could win with an action point to spare on my turn. Crazy.

We played with First Edition rules, except we kept the Alchemist's Cave available (although it was never built, and no one ever Foraged for Food).

Very sketchy record keeping here. Scott knows that he played, and that he was the Operations Expert. However, he couldn't remember anyone else that was two feet away from him at the time. Isn't he too young to be having this type of memory loss?

Evidently, this was a close game, since "Just Barely" was written on the scoresheet next to Gabe's and Brian's finishing place. Maybe Nikki was a *very* distant fourth, which just made it look like Gabe and Brian were somewhat close to Lisa.

We played on a fairly open map with airplanes and cities, and we never had any conflict. We each also had multiple mountains on our own side of the board, so this was a pretty rich game overall.

William ramped up faster than me, and once he got airplanes soaring around the board, I had to change my strategy. I knew we would have lots of gold nuggets, so my plan was to crank it out and make coins and stocks (of course!). But once I could tell I didn't have time to do everything needed, I counted my transporting ability.

I had five donkeys and three rafts, for a total carrying capacity of 19. So I decided to simply get 18 gold nuggets, and end the game just as I pulled the 18th. Lucky me, I got five consecutive Wonder rows all to myself during that time, and Will had to leave three pieces of gold lying around at the end of the game, which is an 80 point swing. That allowed me to pass William at the wire (barely!).

You know how the goal is to destroy the One Ring in lava? Well, they never even smelled the lava. Or ran into a big huge spider. They barely made it through the Mines of Moria! Total loss. Never let Anglea play Frodo.

Wanted to try this one again as I haven't played it in years; unfortunately none of us really enjoyed it. I want to give it another play in case this was a fluke, as I remember liking it in the past, but I can see it possibly ended up in the trade pile.

(Lower is better)

France & Bavaria - Jay/Pete: 0 (1st)
Austria (and later Saxony) - Dan: 2 (2nd)
Prussia & Nederlanders - Melinda: 6 or more each(3rd)

Prussia drove into Silesia early and slapped around the Austrians, but just couldn't take that last area. What hurt me early (a handful of spades) saved that last spot from capture (it was in a spade area).

My attempts to bluff the Bavarians failed miserably and they made some inroads into Austria, along with some French later.

Meanwhile, the Austrians and French danced around each other in the West, while the Nederlanders headed south and started to make some progress, when things really started to unravel for Melinda.

I held some strong cards, so the Austrians were able to rebuild their army and start smashing the Prussians, who were now card starved, partly due to continually being harassed by my hussars. This resulted in Saxony flipping to my side, and relegated the Prussians to a defensive position for the rest of the game. Not that the Saxons ever accomplished anything. With only 1 general they were relegated to defensive duty when both Prussian and French armies began to threaten.

I was able to drive the Bavarians back, and even invade Bavarian territory, but I couldn't deliver the knockout blow. Elsewhere, the French defeated the Nederlanders and, to add insult to injury, cut their supply, sending them into full retreat, and opening up more areas for the French to capture. A Nederlander recovery was short-lived.

The defeat of the Nederlanders ultimately sealed the French victory before I had the chance to recover the lost areas in Prussia.
