we've all experienced it at least once before

the smell of a new game, the difficulty in getting the box open the first time, the feeling (ecstasy ?) of un-punching all the chits piece by piece, the tough decision on whether to throw away the punched card afterwards.

the mess we've made of the floor / bed / house (!!!). the colors ! the pieces ! the box fart sound when you close it for the first time.
everything comes together to put that wide smile (cheek to cheek) on your face.

share with us ! your best game unboxing experience ever.
it can be any game. big box, war game, card game, well, except Print & Play i guess. haha

seeing that some of us have multitudes of games, i'll let you choose 2.
for the first one (the best) you add the item to the list, the second one you just put a simple link within the first item description.

and tell us why it was your best !
remember, only 2 ! its tough but we can do it !

it was a toss up for me between Ca$h & Gun$ and Cyclades

but i gave Ca$h & Gun$ the nod because it was my first ever Board Game purchase. and i still fondly remember the time i opened it up and sitting there before me was 6 shiny orange foam guns. just waiting for me to bust them out.

the feel of the guns were spectacular (but they werent real)
*for those that get the joke, a thumbs up to you

and i loved the artwork for the character models and the shame tokens.
heck, i loved it so much that i hunted down a copy of the game with the black foam guns and now i have 2 copies. and i get to experience the unboxing twice.

*runner up*
Cyclades
everything about Cyclades just shouted out to me love.
i love the mythological theme, i love the artwork, and i love the pieces.
just imagine me opening the box and rainbows starting flying out everywhere. yeah something like that. that's how much i enjoyed unboxing Cyclades.

from the detailed pieces to the individual player screens to the modular board and all the weird shaped tokens. cornucopias anyone ?
much love was put into the production of it and much love it received from me.

Unpacking Factory Fun was glorious. There aren't tons of bits, no great box fart or anything.... But let me tell you, the way the cardboard machines punched out of their sprues...fantastic. Not a one fell out by itself in transit, but they fell out of the sprues like slow-cooked ribs falling off the bone....

I'm gonna stop talking now before this gets creepy.

It was a Christmas present and it was also the second game in my collection (after the esteemed but comparably spartanic Hammer of the Scots). I had read about Starcraft before and of course played the computer game but what came out of that box was just amazing. All those detailed miniatures, hundreds of cards, so much to unpunch... From there on, unboxing has become a profane thing to me.

Still is a very fun game to play!!!!!

My second has to be Heroscape Master Set: Rise of the Valkyrie
Just to be able to make a 3D battle board and battle iwth great figs right out of the box was something to behold!

This may seem obvious, but wow. First the packing box was amazing. I mean who gets excited about the shipping box? Then the wooden box emerges. Then you open the wooden box. Each tray of minis was a sight to behold. Then finally on the bottom, the huge redone map. I swear to god, I was hyperventilating by the time I got to the map!

Recently I traded 1860: Isle of Wight for Le Havre. Upon opening the box I found the pieces neatly housed in two small, compartmentalized plastic boxes, perfectly suited for the purpose. (I've sometimes received games in trades where the pieces were just loose in the box, not even bagged.) In addition, the cards were all in sleeves! All in all, a great unboxing experience.

Thanks again for the extras, Jason!

10 years old. 1962. Christmas. The beginning of a love of wargames.
All of those Blue and Red ships! The dual fortress 18 pounders and mines!
Attaching all of those cool sails to make Cutters, Brigs, Frigates, and Ships of the Line. I even used different holes and sail heights when making up the brigs and frigates so that they would have an individual look to them. A very memorable experience. I'd better get this out and have a quick game with one of the sons!

The 2nd ed Space Marine box set in 1991 was my first entry into miniatures wargaming. I was not prepared for how much stuff was crammed into the box and with each plastic sprue I pulled out I was amazed at what I had gotten into.

It would be a few years before I had the nerve to try to paint any of it; fortunately for me the three armies included were of different color plastic, and that was good enough for me at the time. Nineteen years later, it is now mostly painted, along with several of the smaller box sets, including a complete (minus the land train) Squat army.

No other unboxing has come close to that experience for me!

Hmm Tough one,

I'd have to give that to Stone age for nostalgic reasons. Not my first game, but my first big box, lots of pieces (comparatively speaking) game. The stacks of cardboard, the pack of cards, the eyerolling wife, the slight leathery musk (read: stink) wafting from the considerably oversized box. Good times.

We then played two consecutive games of it, and had a blast staying up to like 1 am.

Second place would go to Agricola probably, so much stuff.

Sure, it was the unboxing, the unbelievable multitude of bits, so many unique monsters, investigators, Great Old Ones... so many cards... all of which could be pored over, assessed, guessed at the importance of. The friggin' quality of the card stock was beautiful, for chrissakes. So very much, and so very pretty.

But more than that, it was the pre-unboxing. I was alone in the house, hanging out on the couch with the game. Just holding it. It was big, and heavy. The saturated quality of the box-art... it all seemed to promise great things.

And then it hit me... it was the same feeling I had as a kid, holding a new LP, just before taking it out, setting it on the turntable and dropping the needle. The dimensions (save the thickness, of course) were virtually the same. I was lost in the Arkham Horror box the same way I would get lost in a great album cover.

I've always mourned the loss of that aspect of the experience, with the rise of CDs and now iTunes. A digital download just doesn't fire the imagination and expectation the way a big, beautiful square of cardboard does. But holding that Arkham Horror box, it was that feeling again, rushing back. Great, rich, immersive things awaited... all I had to do was drop the needle.

So off comes the wrapping paper and I was just in awe by the box art. As I opened the shrink wrap and opened the box lid, my wife looks inside and says..."I'll never play that."

It's been sitting on the bookcase ever since...soblue

I grew up playing Dungeons and Dragons back in the 80's. The game was great, but the miniatures back then were like imaginative modern lead art: "Yea Kurt, that does look a bit like an orc... or what I think an orc might look like". To open up Descent and see all the supurbly crafted miniatures would have been enough, but all the tiles and counters and cards...I dreamed of this stuff. It was just 25 years late.

Spay Sulk - a gorgeous feast for the eyes and very tactile. A robust box and quality components. Punching out counters is a fetish of mine. And each marine unique posed and detailed! And elements of the hulk incorporated into the genestealers! And the brood lord - oh my! In terms of components, this was an incredible improvement on an already attractive piece of Ameritrash. Gorgeously illustrated manuals, with plenty of unnecessary, but delicious fluff. Little touches - the timer, the bone effect dice, the debossed corridors. Yum!

I know it's not a board game but this is the one single item that led me down the geek path. In the late '70's my dad read a small article about the game and thought it would be interesting. Spotting it in a store shortly thereafter I gave it to him as a fathers day gift. Eagerly I 'helped' him open the package and was instantly mesmerized by the artwork and maps, monsters and treasure. I owe my love of boardgames and RPG's to this item. It sparked my imagination and left a lasting sense of wonderment that dwells within me over 30 years later.

Although I greatly enjoy opening a new box and looking over all the bits, none of those experiences have ever compared to that boyhood memory.

Second impression: wow, the inside of the box is really lame.
Third impression: stunningly beautiful! Nice small imps! Love the small cubes! The boards' art is magnificent!

Happily, I read other people's experience unpunching the many components of this game and so I was very careful. But it was very, very tricky to get everything unpunched without damaged pieces.

I had ordered one of these online for only $22, which was exciting in of itself. Then it came in the mail a couple weeks later, I opened it up, and there was 10 sheets of stuff to punch out. Ten! And it came with component bags! And two books!(English and German) Settlers is also one of my favorite games, so as I was punching it out, I kept asking myself "Now what is this piece used for?" All in all an entertaining hour.

#2 is when I bought part of a Magic the Gathering collection on ebay. Took me a couple days worth of free time to sort through all 6000 cards.

It was about 15 years ago, I was still single, and a friend called me one Sunday morning. He was assistant manager at a local Kay-Bee Toys and said that there was a cool game that they were dumping for $10 each. I drove up there, bought one, and took it home. I peeled off the shrink-warp, opened the box, and was stunned by the layers and layers of plastic sprues in different colors. It seemed like the more sprues I pulled out the more there were. I spread them out all over the floor and just reveled in all the bits of plastic to put together and (maybe) paint.

I was so overcome with the coolness factor, and so excited about the game, that I jumped in my car, drove back to the store, and bought another one, just so I could have it. I stuck it on a shelf and kept it safe for a long time.

Now my kids (9 and 11) have the second copy, and whenever I get mine out to paint, they want to paint theirs, too. So we have a good time working on our separate sets, and that's what matters.

But I will never forget the excitement and pure joy of opening and marveling over all the parts in this game.

Just looking at all the wonderful yellow and red counters made the unpacking all worthwhile! The map was icing on the cake!
