Well for the past few years I've been attending this convention in Jacksonville and taking some board games (and gamers) with me.

This year was no exception.

It was a bit of a departure though, because even though the convention didn't 'officially' open until 2pm, they decided that they have me open the 'board gaming' room around 9am on Friday for 'pick up' gaming.

In order to encourage 'pick up' gaming and to encourage each person to 'do their best' I went ahead and brought along my 'white board'.

I had done it the first year, but didn't get a lot of response to it. So, I hadn't done it the second year. But, figure I'd try it again.

So, the basics of the white board is that it's for games that have a scoring track or something in the game that simulates a scoring track so that at the end EVERYONE has a discernible 'place' in the standings.

Then for each game you earn points. 1st place 3 points, 2nd place 2 points, 3rd places 1 point and last place -1 point (all other places score 0) points. (there's a bit more, but that's the basics).

It went 'ok', there were some problems with a few people not understanding it and then getting upset. But, over all it went 'ok'. One of the organizers classified it a success. So, I guess 'ok' is good enough to build upon next year.

So, I'll recap 'some' of the board games. Hopefully some of the participants will add some info and games I've missed.

There are a ton of historical miniature and miniature games as well as some RPGs, I'll being ignoring those for the most part.

So, I got down there more like 8:30 and set up.

I had told my wife that being the first year opening early Friday I fully expected it to be me Wally and about 2 others.

Well I was wrong. Wally didn't get there in the morning. Got there closer to start.

But, I did have two show up fairly early.

Keith came down from Charleston to run a 'war game' room all weekend. But, he came on down to the board game room with his son (Brian).

I sat down and taught them Oregon.

So Wally makes it (traffic) and we decide to go I little longer game. We get is set up and start teaching it.

We get through phase I, but then realized that we thought we sessions started at 2, but where actually started at 1pm. So, we decided to call the game a learning game and suggested we get together later in the con and play a full game.

(Unfortunately, we didn't get a chance).

This is the one game I run at every con I go to. This year instead of running a game, I decided to try a tournament.

Flying Buffalo was kind enough to send a whole bunch of prizes.

Normally I run a game with the 'full set' of cards. This time I decided to play just the first set. I've recently picked up the 1st edition Flying Buffalo version and we've played it a few times and have had fun 'going back to the beginning'.

So, I brought that one as well and 2 sets of the 'current' print run.

I set a point scheme and figured we'd play three or so rounds and then the top players would play off with a game of the 'full set'.

I had hoped to get around 15 people, but only had 4 show up at the beginning, so we just played one table.

We did end up playing three games and a couple people left during it, but were replaced by others. In the end we ended up with a total of 7 people playing.

We did forgo the final round with the 'full set' though.

I think fun was had by all though, and everyone got something to take home.

Thank You Flying Buffalo!

I meet John Hurtt years ago when he's bring has Macrotures to a con a ran. He's now taking games around to cons and setting up to run pick up games and a 'drop in/drop out' game of Battlemasters.

Here's the write up from the website:

"ohn Hurtt (aka Con-Troll) will be bringing his impressive game collect to Rapier this year, so, Welcome to the realm of whatever YOU want! Looking for something to do? Stop by and play an old favorite with friends or try something new! Kids welcome! Look for John, Friday and Saturday, in Gate One.

Game Title: Battle Masters Total War (Campaign)
GM's Name: John "Con-Troll" Hurtt
Game Type: 28mm Miniatures
Rules Used: Battle Masters (Modified)
Number of Players: Up to 6
Brief Description: Battle Masters Total War is a modification to Milton Bradley and GW's original game of fantasy army battles. This is a campaign that lasts from Session one until the end of Session Four. Play whenever you can, whenever you want to accrue points for your army. Choose your side! Defend the Empire with the might of the Army of the Emperor, or bring it down in flames with the savage warhost of the dread Chaos Champion-Gorefist the Destroyer! All Materials Provided. Rules will be taught. Teens and older only please. Gate One"

He also has things for the younger crowd including a hot wheels set. My 8 year was upset that she missed the hot wheels and hopefully she'll get a chance at it next year.

While they give board gamer's their own room, they do have some board games scattered throughout the convention.

This one was run up in where the RPGs were going on, so I don't know much about how it went.

Last year there was a huge 9 player game of Arkham. This year they limited it to 5.

The entire Series was run the entire week by the designer.

"We’ll play the Mulligan on Friday evening, 3 rounds of preliminaries on Saturday, and the Final on Sunday morning.
· In each round, players will be paired by seeding as described above and then randomly assigned to these games in the series: Saratoga, Brandywine Creek (Tournament Scenario) , Eutaw Springs (Campaign Scenario), & Guilford Courthouse (Campaign Scenario.) As the rounds progress and the player pool decreases, games will be withdrawn will be randomly removed.
· The two finalists will play the Campaign Scenario of Monmouth Courthouse."

Another of my con traditions. Mostly in hopes of getting a chance at a long game of it.

Each year I keep trying, this year I got three new players (plus me). [Last year I ended up with a 3 player game]

One person didn't seem to enjoy it much, but the other two seemed to enjoy it. The one in the middle ended up winning by winning the last two states. I had hoped to win one of them, but I was in congruency with two of his platforms and really didn't think it out much. He ended up replacing all four of my issues and i went from a 80 point national baord for issues to 0. He ended up with by under 15 points. But, even last place was only around 20 points behind.

My daughter had a field trip at school, but wanted to come. So, she came late on Friday.

We had the room for as late as we wanted, but most people took off fairly early.

It was down to just a few and my daughter enjoys Bang! so we pulled it out.

Edgar was saying he needed to go home, but we convinced him to sit down (ok he couldn't resist) for a couple games of Bang!

My daughter isn't pictured in this because the first game she was eliminated before she got a turn.

Everyone, however, was ready to call it quits, so it ended up closing down by 1 am.

After a quick breakfast and a few good byes to my family (they had to run back to Gainesville for something).

I went back and started another day of gaming.

I was scheduled to run El Grande followed by Age of Empires III.

I sat down and taught this to a few people that hadn't played it or had played it once years ago.

It went fairly well and didn't take to long. But, as we were putting it up and pulling out AOE III, one of the con organizers came over with his wife and asked if we could teach them El Grande. Never one to pass up a chance to introduce it to new people (and AoE wasn't interesting to his wife and the others were fine replaying El Grande) so we quickly pulled it back out and played again.

The one game of the con I signed up to play in. The person running it I enjoy gaming with and a few of my out of town friends were signed up to play it.

It was advertised as a BSG game, but when I got the they were planning on playing Pegasus. I really don't like the expansion, but it's more about the people. There was an extra person wanting to play also, so they decided to run it as a 7 player game.

That meant a cylon leader. As I had the most experience playing pegasus (and I'd bet BSG) they decided I'd play the cylon leader. I picked Cavil and got a hostile agenda. It was the one that I needed to be in the brig or executed. I infiltrated and began making a nuisance of myself. But, the airlock got damaged and although I could have repaired it I didn't think I wanted to telegraph it that much. So, I went to resurrection ship and farmed a few super crisis cards and started getting them scared of what they might be in my hand so they would want to execute me when we got to New Caprica.

Well, even though only one person hadn't played it before, the others weren't that experienced. Plus, it was a 7 player game (without the sympathizer). So, somewhere around three hours into the game, we had just barely made it the the sleeper phase. We still had one or two jumps to New Caprica. I had con duties, so I had to go. They played just a couple more rounds and had to abandon the game. The admiral was one of the hidden cylons and there were a ones in the next three pairs of jumps, so it might have been 3 more jumps.
