I know that there were games published by the Nazis during WW II and I know that Daring Eagle was published by the US Government during the GWOT. Were there any others?

This is a Geeklist of games published throughout time by various governments around the world.

Discussion of the game merrits or lack of merrits and also the political motivation behind the government's publication of a game are welcome and encouraged.

During World War II, the British secret service hatched a master plan to smuggle escape gear to captured Allied soldiers inside Germany. Their secret weapon? Monopoly boxes. The original notion was simple enough: Find a way to sneak useful items into prison camps in an unassuming form. But the idea to use Monopoly came from a series of happy coincidences, all of which started with maps.

I'm not absolutely sure it was published by the Canadian government as such, but it was definitely distributed by it, to any schools or individuals who requested it. It was meant to promote bilingualism. I wish I knew what happened to the copy my family had.

This is an artillery "trivia" game published by the U.S. Army.

If anybody in the USA wants this oddity they can have it, but you must pay the postage. It is heavy.

Zap me a GeekMail.

This educational game was made in 1942 by the CBC (Canadian Broadcasting Corporation) which is the national television network. Its aim was "to enable listeners of all ages to better visualize the mobilization of this country's vast resources in the gigantic war effort ... and in the crucial Battle of the Atlantic in particular."

Okay, while looking for the CBC one above that my uncle once owned during the war, I came across this one published by the Singapore National Council Against Drug Abuse (as part of the Partnership for a Drug Free Singapore).

Basically the game "Snap", it uses cards with illustrations of grotesque and pitiful creatures that have succumbed to the evils of drug abuse. Each card comes with a little rhyme detailing the sad fate of its character - for example:

MAK THE RABBIT
"I wish you peace" said Mak the rabbit.
His friends gave him drugs,
Now he can't kick the habit.

When two cards of the same design are seen, the first player to shout "NABBED!" gets to keep both stacks of upturned cards adding all of them face down to the bottom of his/her stack.
