I thought I would create a list of games that were your favorites after your first play that eventually lost their luster. Is there a game that enraptured you at first, and then you woke up and said, "What was I thinking!"

For me that game was Container. After reading positive reviews, I thought this game would be a good match for my group. I read the rules and thought, "Wow, that game sounds elegant." Simple rules and easy to explain with a lot of depth.

I played the game 4 times, each time with a different group. I enjoyed it less and less each time as groups got more and more angry with me. The rules are simple, but it is arguable how much game is there. The big shipping boats are nice but the theme is kind of dry to the point of parody (look at the color scheme). I enjoyed my first game but subsequent plays and angrier groups caused me to trade this one away.

Awesome at first but grew very stale very quickly. Each expansion gives it life for a week or so with new cards and strategies being added but then it grows stale again.

At first I thought this game was the best thing since sliced bread. Relatively easy to explain for non-gamers and responsible for creating a few converts to the hobby. Unfortunately with my normal group that stretches the negotiation phase out way too long, this game got old pretty fast.

Yes, I know a proper 18XX tile should have a tile number.

End game became too much of a "bash the person who will win on their next turn, lather, rinse, repeat."

Lasted about 5 plays.

the first couple of times I played Munchkin I thought it was brilliant, so much so that I bought a bunch of different sets and expansions.. then I didn't get to play for aaages and when I finally did I found it absolutely tedious and uninteresting (and I was playing with the same people on each occasion, so I don't think it was the players rather than the game that caused the problem.) I tried the various versions a couple of times afterwards but was unable to drum up any enthusiasm. I've since abandoned the series - I bought Killer Bunnies as a substitute and I find it scratches the same itch in a much more satisfactory fashion.

Utterly cool mechanics, boiled down to a race to take enough loans to build out your plan.

Hopefully the expansions fixed some of that.

Lasted about 3 plays.

After winning a few and losing a few, I found I had zero interest in playing again, and my husband agreed. Nothing new would present itself that we wouldn't know how to react to. Whether we would win or lose would depend upon the cards/epidemics and the roles we would get. Traded away.

Just admit it already, Small World is not a fantasy wargame...it's a Mancala variant!

I sat through a demo of this at Gen Con and immediately picked up a copy. I'm a big fan of Arkham Horror, Last Night On Earth and other RPG-lite type games, so I figured this would be a nice fit for the collection. After three or four plays I noticed that most of the games ended as a group effort to get it over with, everyone working together to help one player win.

That would be alright, if this were a co-op game.

shake

...but it's not.
