Even though I'm not allowed to buy any new games until 2035, it's never too early to start planning for 2035...

Rachy prefers card games and tile-laying games- Lost Cities and Ark of the Covenant are two of her current favorites. I prefer wargames. Advanced Third Reich and Siege of Jerusalem get me going. How to compromise?

We have discovered that certain very "light" wargames keep us both happy. So far, Ogre/GEV is the best thing that we both agree on. The rules are simple enough that Rachy was willing to learn it and play it (despite her initial objection to the math involved), the beautiful painted miniatures give it nice and appealing quality, and the mechanics offer enough depth of strategy to keep me, a wargamer, happy. So we're both happy.

But we can't just play Ogre/GEV forever. When 2035 rolls around, I plan on looking for similarly "light" wargames. A small step up in complexity would be welcome.

I'm looking for suggestions from other games of beer 'n' pretzels style wargames that Rachy might be willing to play with me. Keep it simple, but not too simple. Also, please offer your opinion as to the complexity of the game. Consider each wargame on a complexity scale from 1 to 10.

For example: at 1, you have the most stripped down of all wargames... say, something like Hellas. It's so simple that's it's hardly a wargame, and some would argue that it's not really a wargame, though the mechanics are wargamish if you leave out the cards.

Ogre would rate about a 3- unit stats like attack and defense values, movement, range, all the things that make a traditional wargame a wargame.

GEV would rate about a 4- more complex than Ogre, but not much.

My copy of GMT's Brandywine might rate a 5, Siege of Jerusalem about an 8, and Advanced Third Reich a 9 or 10.

Advanced Third Reich is right out. Even Brandywine (a 5) is too "tedious" for Rachy. I'm looking for something simple, but not too simple... say, something in the 2 to 5 range.

Low map density (not too many pieces) is also a plus. The sheer number of unit counters in Siege of Jerusalem was enough to make Rachy nervous.

Game length isn't too important, since we're willing to start a game and leave it set up until a later time. Long does not necessarily mean complex.

Listed here are some games that might fit my criteria. Please feel free to comment, or add your own!

This one appeals to me. If you've played it, how would you rate it in complexity from 1-10 (as a wargame)?

I know a lot of people will suggest this one. It might be just what we're looking for, and I tend to love anything WWII related. How does it rate in complexity?

Battle Cry might also work, so I'll include it in this entry as well. But the subject matter of '44 interests me more.

I'm dying to try this one! Could this be exactly what I'm looking for- very similar in scope and theme to my beloved A3R, but simple enough that even Rachy will be willing to learn the rules and play it with me? I've read that it's no harder to learn to play than Axis and Allies, and we've played Axis and Allies: Europe together already, and Rachy had no problem with the rules. What do you geeks think? How does it rate for complexity?

Another block game. Maybe this would be a better place to start than Europe, since it's smaller and presumably simpler. Suggestions? Also, is this one difficult to find?

I've read that this one is fairly light for a GMT offering, and the map and units look freaking GORGEOUS, which is a big plus when trying to get Rachy interested in a new game. Do you guys think this would be too complex? How does it compare to GMT's Brandywine (or others in the same series, like Guilford)?

The company totes this as being a game that even non-gamers can get into... a very simple wargame. Have any of you guys played it? What did you think?

The new Avalanche Press wargames seem like they might, in general, meet my criteria.

Please add more games to the list! 2035 is right around the corner...

The "Lightning" series of card games by Decision Games. Interesting games while being both quick and easy to play. Very much "light" wargames.

Probably the simplest of the Columbia block games. Still a challenging game, but probably simple enough for your needs too.

Probably only a "war game" in theme alone. However, for a light two player game this one's pretty great.

This may be a strange suggestion, as it is not considered a 'light' boardgame. But the reasonit is considered heavy is because it contains a lot. And considering your geeklists I think Rachy just might like this one. It's got exploration(tile laying), card playing, city development(tile laying), Egyptians, Norse, Greek, resource gathering, lot's of mini's, and even more.

But it's a pretty tough game. And it's expensive.

General difficulty: 5
War difficulty: 4

I'd suggest Viktory II. It's about a 3 on your scale. There are excellent minis of infantry, cavalry, artillery and frigates. Each has a different abilities for movement, attack/defense value, etc. It's simple to learn and every game is different thanks to a modifiable map of terrain hexes.
