On Monday I asked the geek to try to guess a game a user would like and one they would not like based only on the image on their Avatar. This was quite a challenge as it meant you had very limited information from which to make your decision. It also meant users without an avatar could not take part, sorry.

As an idea it has proved quite popular, so I thought today I would turn it on it’s head. Once again I am asking you to name two games for the previous poster, one they would like and one they would not. However this time I want you to do it with as much information as you can get. Do go and look at their profile, look at their collection and check their ratings. Even send them a geekmail if you want to get it right.

Then post the two games. One rule here, the games you recommend must be games the user has not already rated or owned.

As we are going for full information rather than me starting off with a random user. I am going to pick one.

Mark has become a friend thanks to BGG. As we live on different continents, it's unlikely we would have met any other way. But thanks to this great community Mark and I did meet.

I think Mark has cursed me more than a few times for introducing him to games that were otherwise not on his radar. Of them all Brass was the biggest success. A game Mark thought looked a bit dry and boring for his own taste. But when I got him playing it online, he soon realised he had to have his own copy. It's now one of his favourite games. So this one is dead easy, new game based on Brass. no brainer that Mark will love Age of industry.

I realised after deciding to use Mark for this list, that although I know about the games he likes, I don't know what he dislikes. he usually seems to have a good word for all games. I looked through his collection, but the lowest rated game he had was a 4 and i was looking for lower. I could of course geek mail him (I make the rules and I said that was OK.) But I didn't want to do that.

So I am flying solo to a degree here. I decided to go with a game that most people I know don't like, and Mark being a man of mostly good taste (There is one game we disagree on) is I feel confident bound to agree. So I am suggesting that Mark should keep well away from Zombies and it's many sequels.

John definately has a GREAT background in gaming! Wargaming, although a genre he has pushed to the side a bit, is still ingrained in his gaming history and I think he desires to find another good wargame. It has to have rules that are easy to digest thus, being able to get to the table quick! This game will bring back the old AH days without a lot of rules. MMP has done a great job in making games that people WANT to play and I think this fits John's style.

My second game I would pick for John would be Thunderstone. I see he has one play but no rating (that I could find). This game seemed to fit the bill of CCG to a point, without the EXPENSE of CCG!!! Like Dominion, it is self contained and proves to be a quick and fun play with a lot of strategy to it. I figure it would be a game John would add to his collection not only becasue it is a good game...but it is expandable!

As John likes wargames and GMT Games, I'm sure he'd like this forthcoming effort from Mr. Simonitch.

He seems like quite a gregarious fellow, so perhaps he wouldn't like solitaire games, such as Solitaire !

Looking at Ian's profile and looking at his avatar provides an interesting dichotomy. On one end, you have all the happiness an avatar can handle - and then his game ratings feature many wargames. As a microbadged Grognard, I fear Ian will look at my recommendations and attack them with more die modifiers than I can handle.

I've recently played Washington's War, and it is a wargame not on Ian's list. Perhaps a bit light for someone who rates ASL a 10, but as someone who holds a GMT microbadge, WW was my first thought.

A game that I think Ian would not like:

He rates Carcassonne an 8.5, so he's obviously open to many different forms of games. Many of his rated games are heavy (at least imho) and competitive games - so I'm going to choose a game that I would think he would not enjoy after multiple plays. I would pick Pandemic (unless he used the bio-terrorist in the expansion). Just something about a grognard partaking in a cooperative game strikes me as a paradox. Probably because I tried to teach my father (a Grognard himself) the game and he was meh on it.

sigtaulefty definitely has a strong bias towards euros. However, he is not afraid of conflicts with other players. Age of Steam is a game that will also hit siggy's G-spot - his need to fondle money.

Finding a game he will like was an easy task. But picking just one was more demanding.

On the basis of the information I gathered from his profile, I'd say Talisman is a game that'll cause him diarrhea. It may drag on infinitely and it's all about luck. You're not amassing money either.

has this in his profile:

Quote:
A good game offers tight and meaningful decisions. Great games add something special into the mix or perform certain things extraordinary well. That could be beautiful artwork, clever mechanics, or an interesting theme. But to be really outstanding, a game has to provoke some feelings also. I want feel bad after losing, and find triumph in victory. Maybe this is why many of my top rated games are theme-heavy 2 player games.

Couple games come to mind, but I'm going to go with a game I recently learned that is not overly theme heavy, but does offer some tough choices, especially in a 2P game. It scales well 2-4 as well.

If I were to choose based on some microbadges, I may pick a Basketball themed game like March Madness - but MM does not fit the bill in his above description. There are some choices to make, but it's essentially a roll off.

As a fellow 1960 and Twilight Struggle fan, I can probably recommend Founding Fathers even though I haven't played it. Campaign Manager 2008 might be a good filler game for him as well.

What would he not like?
Killer Bunnies and the Quest for the Magic Carrot - I doubt he'd enjoy the end game mechanic and would have to be playing with a lot of other silly players to get any enjoyment.

And the game i think you would like... wait for it... The one I designed of course!!!

Ok, I'm sure that really doesn't qualify so here is my real suggestion:

Based on your owned games and Hot/Top ten I think you would like Bootleggers. Its a very well themed Euro with lots of player interaction and a fair bit of strategy. (I did well trying to buy up all the trucks and become a U-haul) I saw you don't own it, so i hope its a good recommendation.

I don't think you would like Munchkin Quest, the humerous theme goes only so far and the game mechanics incorporate far too much luck.

Close?

Eric only has one game rated, has nothing in terms of a bio, and has one game in his collection, Exile Sun, which he designed himself (and which he modestly didn't even rate a 10 which scores him points for humility ). I'm sure he's played other games, but there's not a lot of evidence to find out what he has liked. Exile is listed as science fiction in theme and I have found that Eric is a fan of Dune and Cosmic Encounter. Sadly, I don't know a whole lot about these games.

I don't even know a whole heckuva lot about the game I'm recommending for him either, which is Android. What I gather though, is the game he designed and Android are heavier sci-fi games with a lot of options and game play paths, though I could be wrong.

As for what he would hate I would have to go with... Carcassonne. It's a light euro worker placement with cutesy pieces. Did I do alright?

Hmm, my first suggestion would have to be Stone Age. I think TommyP would quite like this game. He seems to have a soft spot for medium weight games that are easy to pull out and yet engaging to play - Pandemic, Settlers of Catan, Thurn and Taxis and so forth. Stone Age fits that group of games admirably. It plays easily, isn't overly complex, and yet is a good deal of fun.

The game I think TommyP would hate with the fiery passion of an exploding star is E.T.O.: European Theatre of Operations, because he would buy the game sight unseen thinking the opening turn of the game might elicit: "O for a muse of fire, that would ascend the brightest heaven of invention. A kingdom for a stage, princes to act, and monarchs to behold the swelling scene..."

But it probably won't!

Cheers.

Giles.

However, what he would hate....maybe one I didn't like as well: Monopoly Deal the cardgame
