The first game played this month was the completion of John and Luther's long-running A3R game. They started last October and played most Friday nights since then. Luther reports that the game ended in a German tactical victory. Early on, it seemed to me to be favoring the Allied but the Eastern Front was apparently more favorable towards the Germans.

The first Saturday in July has become something of a small open house for MSG, where more members make an effort to come down, hotdogs and other noshes are available and generally a good time is had by all. Gaming today started with a couple of filler games of RftG as we waited for people to straggle in.

We followed up with a seven-person Formula Dé race using the Monaco track. That always makes for a tight race - especially if you run it in the rain as we did early on in the club's racing seasons. This time with newbies in the mix and most others a bit rusty, we opted to run in clear weather. The field was large enough to jam up some corners but not claustrophobic. We only lost one car, at the very end of the race coming into the final corner too fast for its remaining brakes and tires.

Simultaneously with FD, a two-game series of C&C Ancients started up in the back room. Both games were out of the Roman Civil Wars according to what I could hear.

The FD game itself broke up into two games, one a three-player Wellington, with Mike Snively handling the French versus Paul Hamar's Brits and Scot McConnachie's Spaniards. Good cards on the French side and some ill luck on the part of the Allies slowed their progress in 1812. They weren't quite able to grab and hold Madrid and the French were able to force peace upon Spain at the end of 1812. Some people find this possible end in 1812 annoying but I think it rewards good French play and forces the Allies to work with their initial limited resources.

The other spin-off from FD was a learning Le Havre game with Bill, Daniel, Ken and myself. No-one got in horrible trouble and we wound up with final scores of 170, 149, 126 and 97. Given Bill's much greater experience, his win wasn't surprising but no-one really felt out of the game. I still got caught short of food at the end and not able to ship out as much as I theoretically could. Did managed to grab the first Luxury Liner and the Dock, which is a good combo.

On Monday, we played a four player game on the France map. We played with the central and yellow regions out of play, so this was a really tough map. Mike got squeezed early and was never a factor. Near the end Randall bought the 42 plant, but then Scot squeezed him out of coal. He let Randall have coal on the last turn, but Scot was able to build cheap cities in the Riviera to get to 18 for the victory,

Tuesday, we played a six player game of Power Grid on the Brazil map. Coal ran out (or course). All other fuel was plentiful. When Step 2 started, I jumped out to 10 cities. That did not work out right. I think at 9 cities someone would have been forced to build past me. Paul (a newcomer) made the mistake of building past me, so he was squeezed out of coal on the last turn. Dan won.

Wednesdays are usually slated for miniatures games but no one set anything up so we made it a Euros day. Martin Stever came by for one of his occasional visits and we started with this game.

This was truly the most vicious game of Glory to Rome that I have witnessed. In a five player game the Legions were out in force. Colin built the Coliseum early. I followed with a Bridge. Colin started the mess, seizing one of my Legion clients and my Architect client. I immediately retaliated with my Bridge, capturing 5(!) Marbles and then Bill completed a building and took away my Bridge!

It went downhill for everyone but Bill and Colin as we saw our stockpiles and our clients raided. Colin's vault was becoming huge when Bill pointed out that the rules allowed the players to concede the game to a clear winner. We all looked at Colin's vault and, per the rules, conceded the game.

Victory by concession indeed!

I was introduced to Small World this evening. I know that it is popular but it did not work for me.

I like Euros for their elegance at simulating basic interactions that can be projected to reflect basic power, economic, strategy, and even the occasional military considerations. I freely admit to being a grognard but even I like some Euro-influenced wargames. However, when someone comes up with a fantasy wargame that is neither a Euro nor a wargame, I think of every area movement, non-simulation, mechanically unrealistic, fantasy wargame that has goals I could care less about ever produced. There are far, far too many of them. They are all the same and they are all equally meaningless. I would rather play Titan, even with its logically absurd mechanisms, and I loathe Titan.

At least History of the World has some history in it. This game is drivel.

I introduced both Allan and Colin to this game of building dice engines. Allan is a pretty quick study and Colin picked it up pretty well too. We played two games with both ending on the short strategy. I won the first time before anyone started the Hindenberg. In the second game Colin and Allan both outmaneuvered me by letting me go strongly for the Hindenberg and cutting the game short on me. The second victory was Allan's.

Two more players converted to this game as a regular filler.

After a considerable hiatus John and I finally got a in a session of Liberty Roads. We played the months of September and October (four turns).

In Brittany, the Allies spent September building up while they repaired Lorient. Meanwhile the southern front has stabilized near Montelimar while the Franco-Americans prepared to attack Marseilles. Both Toulon and Marseilles started the session fortified with two German infantry divisions each. While the weather is starting to get worse only one turn ended up with rain.

By the end of October. Marseilles had fallen and the Allies had invested Toulon (the Allied southern landings had been at the mouth of the Rhone). Meanwhile the Germans evacuated southwest France except for fortresses at Rayon, Bordeaux, and La Rochelle.

The real changes have been in Brittany. The German defense line in Brittany has been strong running from St. Malo (recaptured and fortified) through Rennes and along the Vienne to the Bay of Biscay. Ahistorically, the British are on the Allied right rather than the left (a result that probably should be illegal for logistical reasons) and due to German counterattacks toward the American beaches, the British were in a better position to launch offensives. A preliminary British offensive crossed the Vienne moving toward St. Nazaire and Nantes and then the British committed the 'full Monty' as it were. A mistaken German deployment of armor to defend the bocage south of the Vienne and opening of a path to Nantes allowed the British to make a full attack at this city, which guards the entrances to both the Loire valley and to the open country of southwest France. British 6 AB and US 17 AB were dropped to secure a bridgehead over the Loire south from Nantes and Monty's staff directed a full attack on the city itself; the two full strength German divisions in the city were destroyed in detail. Simultaneous infantry attacks on St. Nazaire have secured that major port. If it wasn't for the events surrounding the supporting attacks on the British left, the door would now be open to France south of the Loire.

Unfortunately the British armor failed to crack completely 9th SS on the British left and nowhere did the British get exploit results on this critical turn. This opened a small window for a German panzer corps attack that has temporarily cut off the Nantes spearhead from Allied supply. More importantly the German resistance and counterattacks have seriously depleted Commonwealth armored forces; they will take several turns to recover. This German response will be at best a temporary relief as the British will have overwhelming forces to re-establish a supply link but they have bought a turn of forcing the British to respond. However to do this, the Germans have had to strip their armor reserves supporting the northern part of the line facing the Americans. If the weather holds and the Allies gain decent support the Americans should be able to push hard against Rennes and St. Malo while the British sweep into the open country of the Loire valley and to the south. In obvious anticipation of such a sweep the Germans have moved a motorized infantry corps and a panzer division near Tours.

The Allies finally are close to breaking out of Brittany and the only question is when, not if, the Germans will fall back on their new defense line that is building on the Seine. However the Allies' biggest enemy is now time. The game is now half over and the favorable weather is unlikely to hold.

BfN resumed with the PM turn of July 13th. Following the morning's capture of western Caen, things quieted down. Limited bombardments across the entire front inflicted some attrition on the Germans. Meanwhile, the Germans used their few long range guns to attempt similar effects but without effect.

The 14th saw the weather slightly worsen to Partly Cloudy. But beyond some barrages, the Allies remained quiet for the day, presumably building up supplies for a future offensive operation. Armed recon spent their time harassing the entering 5th Fallschirmjaeger Division, which was battered by the time it made the front lines. The 15th also was Partly Cloudy and largely quiet. A sharp British attack seized an additional hex of Caen. Interdiction was directed primarily to slowing down German redeployment on Maps B and D.

The 16th dawned Cloudy. The accumulated Allied supplies were partially spent on an offensive aimed at gaining Lessay. In contrast to prior attempts and partially due to long-term attrition on 2d Panzer Division, the Americans were able to successfully jump the river. Seeing this, the German defenders began pulling back towards the bocage behind Lessay. There were also limited attacks in the St Lo sector, which while not tremendously successful, did manage to push back the defenders in a couple of locations.

Play for the day finished with the night and AM turns of the 17th, which was again Clear weather. The US offensive in the Lessay sector appeared to be running out of steam, though it had some additional success. But the arrival of a reinforcing division appeared to limit the possibilities for further advances. Further limited attacks in the St Lo sector were less successful than desired but may bear dividends.
