The Fantasia Film Festival is an international film festival event happening every summer in my beautiful city of Montreal.

It is now the second year I have attended this event, and I am much more prepared this year, having consulted the listings in advance and having bought all my tickets (or almost) already.

Since we have had a few geeklists already on Best Sci-fi films and Best Fantasy films, etc. I thought it would be interesting to show here which films I am going to see and maybe create some debate around them.

Since it is a horror/fantasy festival, I believe it is appropriate.

I will post as a reply to the items my thoughts about the films after I have seen them.

Also, this is my first geeklist and I don't know too much about referencing and such, so I will post a link to the official website so you can go see for yourselves the trailers and additional info.

Here goes...

My first film is Gallants

He’s fast, quick, powerful, undefeated—and he hates ugly people. His motto is, “If you fight, you must win… if you don't want to lose, you don’t fight!” His name is Master Law (Teddy Robin) but lovely ladies, please call him Ben. That was 30 years ago, though. Now the master is in a coma, surrounded by Dr. Fun (Susan Shaw), the young kung fu girl Kwai, the washed-out martial arts students Tiger and Dragon (Bruce Leung and Chen Kuan Tai) and a three-decade-old preserved duck. Law’s once-glorious kung fu school has been reduced to a teahouse barely able make the rent, and the two students, once champions, are unfit to train a new generation. Developers want to level the school for much-needed condo space in the already cramped quarters of inner-city Hong Kong. Enter a certified loser: Cheung is sent to assist in the transfer but finds himself siding with underdogs. Meanwhile, Master Law has awakened to a heavy case of amnesia. Luckily, his kung fu chops (along with his knack for vulgarity) seem to be intact. Can he whip the down-and-out denizens of the former kung fu school into shape to face off against the heartless developers?

I have zero expectations for this, I thought the description looked cool. We'll see tonight!

My second film, playing at midnight, is Mutant Girl Squad

The plot: Rin is a happy teenaged girl celebrating her 16th birthday with the family. Her father has a special gift for her: the truth. He’s actually a mutant, with living creatures in place of his nipples. Hmm. Just as Rin is contemplating what this means to her, soldiers barge in and open fire on everyone, leaving mom blown to bits and dad’s severed head smashed through her birthday cake. In her terror and confusion, Rin’s previously undiscovered mutant abilities come to the surface and she destroys everything around her in an unrestrained hurricane of violence! Now branded a public menace, Rin is on the run. She’s soon befriended by a group of similarly mutated girls, she’s brought to their underground camp—populated by even more of her kind. Turns out they’ve been around much longer than the so-called “Japanese,” and they’re sick of being persecuted for their differences. They’re ready to fight back with every mutant power they’ve got—arms turning into blades, the ability to suddenly explode—and scorch the normals clean off the face of the Earth. Japan for mutants only.

Mutant japanese schoolgirls fighting? At midnight?! WIN! I am going to see this with two friends, the atmosphere will be AMAZING!

My third film is The Revenant

Officer First Class Bart Gregory (David Anders) left the safety of home for a tour of duty in the Middle East. Today, young officer Gregory has come home in a pine box, shot dead in combat. Alas, this is just the start of our fallen soldier’s troubles as, on the night of his funeral, before his grave has been filled, Bart wakes up in a state of total panic—sweating, disoriented and still very much dead. Not knowing what to do, he runs to his friend Joey (an absolutely manic Chris Wylde), waking him from his sleep and scaring him half to death! Joey tries giving him cold pizza and finds his efforts rewarded with black bile projectile vomit spewed across his living room. Bart can no longer eat normal food. He’s also beginning to decompose! Soon, the sun rises and Bart passes out, literally dead to the world. At sundown, he wakes up. While he was out, Joey was rocking the Google box, doing research on his friend’s affliction, and they come to the conclusion that Bart has somehow become a revenant. Or more specifically, a vampire. He needs blood but he doesn’t want to hurt innocents. And then, the crimson lightbulb goes off above his rotting head. He’s invincible. Un-woundable. Un-killable. And he’s military-trained. Eureka! Bart is about to become an undead vigilante!

I had not planned to go see this, but a friend of mine said he was going and I thought heh! why not!?

Looks hilarious! Can't wait for monday evening!

Number 4 is Anime film First Squad: The Moment of Truth

“You need the dead to fight the dead.” It is 1942 and the war has stalled along the Eastern Front. Desperate to advance, Hitler’s forces turn to the Ahnenerbe, the secret occult division of the SS, to raise the spirits of their dead ancestors to fight on their behalf. Should they succeed, it will be all-out slaughter, for how can the Russian army possibly stand against the forces of the undead? Fortunately, the Russians are not without occult resources of their own. Their 6th Division conducts its own experiments with the afterlife, and their one great hope is the gifted teenage psychic Nadya, who they must send into the underworld to recruit the spirits of her dead companions—the departed souls of the First Squad—to stand against the Nazi threat.

Undead Russians fighting Undead Nazis?! Japanese Anime style?! NIICE!

5th is Hong Kong film Ip Man 2

He’s taken on ten people at once. Now watch him take on 20 (give or take) with knives. Ip Man is back! A decade has elapsed since the events of the first Ip Man film. Now seeking to make an honest living with his kung fu school in Hong Kong, he must face Master Hung (Sammo Hung of ENTER THE FAT DRAGON and PROJECT A), an expert in Hung Gar who has the power to decide who may or may not open a martial arts school in town. To earn that right, one must face an opponent on top of a round table without falling off. Which style will be victorious? Hung Gar (used by award-winning director Lau Kar Leung in many classic Shaw Brothers films) or Ip Man’s Wing Chung (a style made famous by Bruce Lee)? Ip Man’s sense of righteousness also shakes Hung’s conscience. Behind the scenes, Hung is trying to feed his large family and maintaining order by collecting protection money for a corrupt British officer. This officer’s plan is to unleash the racist boxing champion Twister (Darren Shahlavi) among the Chinese, which will wreak havoc on their national pride. Which style will prevail? Will a triple threat of combat styles be too much to handle for Hong Kong?

Again, I haven't seen the first one, but one of my friends is seeing this so I'm tagging along for some nice Kung-fu action!

On my birthday I am going to see two films, the first one being the Korean Blades of Blood

It is 1592 and the Korea of the Joseon Dynasty is storm-tossed by political instability, moreover in the face the Japanese invasion. Foul souls are caught up in the furious winds of change. Lee Mong-hak, a master swordfighter of royal descent, leads a ruthless rebellion to supercede the country's bickering factions, repel the Japanese—and perhaps claim the throne. His old friend Hwang Jeong-hak, an ostentatiously buffoonish yet deadly blind swordsman (in the mold of Japan's beloved Zatoichi), opposes Lee's violent ambitions, and has enlisted the help of young Gyeong-ja, bastard son of a lord assassinated by Lee, who harbours his own vengeful designs. The courtesan Baek-ji pursues Lee as well, driven by a broken heart. Carried by the winds of wartime, the quartet will collide in a clash of words, wills and weapons.

Looks like a good swordfighting film! We shall see!

The second film on my birthday is American film Fable: Teeth of Beasts

Lilith Noir is a hardboiled freelance enforcer for the shadow government that keeps watch over the city of Fable, a mythical realm that exists just beneath the surface of our awareness. When a fast-talking private detective shows up on her doorstep, Lilith is faced with the case of a lifetime. A new drug has hit the streets of Fable, black market Ouija boards are everywhere, victims of bizarre murders are choking the city morgue and the prime suspect is an ancient demon masquerading as an urban vagrant. Witchcraft. Guns. The occult. Never a dull day in the twilight city…

Seems cool! A dark fantastic epic playing at midnight...

Next one is Russian film Black Lightning

Dima’s like most other Moscow students his age. He’s from hard-working, blue-collar stock, his parents scrimping and sacrificing to afford him a shot at a better future through education. Caught between the old ways of traditional Russian culture and the inevitable wave of Western-style capitalism, Dima is caught between two worlds. Does he hold to the values of his parents or do like his friend Max and dive in to the American Dream wholeheartedly? One thing’s for sure, Max’s approach has landed him the girl of Dima’s dreams... The answer to Dima’s problem, surprisingly, comes in the form of a car. But a not a glossy new piece of high-tech engineering. No, Dima’s car is a beat-up black Volga. A Russian car. The people’s car. An embarrassing antique presented to him by his proud, tram-driving father on his birthday. He’s tempted to simply junk it but good thing he doesn’t. Because, you see, Dima’s new Volga is a relic of another age in more way than one. For it also represents the final successful experiment of a lost Soviet-era laboratory. Dima’s car can fly.

I really like superhero films, I own on DVD many of them. It's nice to be able to see what other countries produce! This is highly anticipated!

Next up is Bodyguards and Assassins

At the dawn of the 20th century, Hong Kong is a British colony and China is ruled by the haughty Qing Dynasty. A wind of defiance is blowing across the land and at the heart of it is Sun Yat-Sen, who history now remembers at the “father of the Nation,” the founder of the Chinese republic. Not all share his vision of a modern China liberated from the clutches of a decaying Imperial court and foreign interlopers. Chen Xiao-Bai, a militant revolutionary thinker, pleads with printing magnate Li Yu-Tang for support. Li is initially uninterested, and moreover discourages his son Chung-Guang from getting involved. This changes, however, when Li’s friends start turning up murdered and Chen is kidnapped by the vicious agents of the reactionary Yan Xiao-Guo. Li’s change of heart is a dramatic one, as he rallies the riffraff of Hong Kong’s alleyways and market stalls, the menial labourers, vegetable hawkers and rickshaw pullers, to take a stand and protect Sun at his most vulnerable moment. Sun’s arrival draws near and so does the clash between the regular folks of Hong Kong’s streets and the Yan’s band of murderers. The next few pages of China’s history will be written in blood.

Again, one of my friends alerted me to this, looks good!

Had to be added!

Next film is geek wonderland Fatso

Young-ish, overweight Rino (Nils Jørgen Kaalstad) is living a solitary existence in Oslo with an ever-growing porn collection and very little connection to the outside world. When he’s not pulling his knob or working a thrilling day job writing technical manuals from home, Rino draws comic books in which he sketches himself as a giant sex-crazed rhinoceros. He’s not what one would call “happy.” See, Rino needs companionship. Or at least, a lot of sex. One day, his hermetically sealed universe is blown wide open when he is forced to take on a roommate. Not just any roommate, mind you, but a cute, blonde Swedish exchange student named Malin (Josefin Ljungman), who on the surface seems like someone straight out of Rino’s sticky mountains of porn. Their lifestyles…. clash. Hysterically.

Norwegian and Swede women!? Can't miss this for ANYTHING!

Previous were the films I have tickets to. I want to add now the ones I have my eye on, or as in this case, the one THAT WAS SOLD OUT!! damn.

Rubber

Under the blazing sun of the American Southwest, a creature prowls aimlessly, driven solely by an unquenchable thirst for vengeance. Its family and friends were savagely massacred. The world at large will pay for this unforgivable crime. Nothing will escape the rage of this psychopathic car tire that… uh, hold on. A serial killer tire? That’s right, you read correctly. Now follow along—this tire with a bloodlust wanders the Arizona desert, leaving behind it a trail of dead, victims reduced to puddles of gore. Thanks to its powerful telepathic abilities, it makes every living thing it crosses, from little bunnies to unlucky motorists, literally explode. The tire is consumed by fury, kills without pity and nothing will sate its rage—except perhaps the gorgeous young woman (Roxane Mesquida) with whom it has fallen obsessively in love. It crossed her path on the road and has since been invaded by unfamiliar emotions. Recognizing at last some sense to its existence, it follows her furtively, awaiting a propitious moment to make its approach. Its newfound sentiments, however, haven’t softened the tire as it continues to blow apart anyone in its path. There truly is nothing more dangerous than a killer car tire in love.

Come on! a murderous TIRE!! Wow seems like I'm not the only one that thinks this is cool, both showing were sold out... Oh well...

I might go see Suck, the trailer looked hilarious!

Joey has a problem. His band, the Winners, is on the verge of making it big. This should be a good thing, really. After years of scratching out a meagre existence in the bars, years of gigs that don’t pay and nobody comes to, years of measuring the hits on their website in single digits, things are finally looking up. Fans are buzzing. Fans are coming out to their shows. Their tour is scheduled to end with a big industry showcase. Life should be great! But it’s not, because their newfound popularity rides on the magnetic power of Joey’s ex-girlfriend and current bassist Jennifer (Jessica Paré)—magnetic power that arrived the day she was turned into a vampire. Playing vampirism as an allegory for addiction, most specifically to heroin, SUCK follows the band as first Jennifer and then the rest of the members succumb to its call. When freshly fed, they are powerful, enthralling, alluring. Fans love them and it’s not hard to see the appeal. But the next morning? Oh, that’s a different story, one filled with nausea, headaches and the gnawing need for more. A hunger that must be fed.

With Olga Kurylenko wearing lots of makeup! Nice

Centurion

Set during the 2nd-century Roman conquest of Britain, Neil Marshall’s CENTURION is a muscular bloodbath of a war film that lacerates with sledgehammer force. Hell is set in motion when Roman Centurion Quintus Dias (Michael Fassbender) leads a pack of soldiers on a raid of a Pict tribesmen’s camp to rescue a captive general (Dominic West). During the raid, the Pict leader’s son is slaughtered, the consequences of which will be more severe than anything the Romans have ever encountered. They will face days of pure terror as a relentless army of Pict warriors hunt them from every angle across the hazy forests of Scotland, coming at them with blades, fire, arrows, teeth and claws. Their number slashed to seven, these usually fearless soldiers of the most powerful army in the world find themselves helpless and horrified, fighting for their lives against vicious, unstoppable attackers.

So.

11 tickets bought at 7$ CAN apiece. Nice sum. 11 films over 20 days, looking forward to lots of film watching!

Totally worth it!
