Collection Metrics - Churn, Regret & Desire - What Are Yours? The aim of this list is to make some general rules on the basis of the high level collection metrics in your profile and see how well it works for us.
Something like this list has probably been done before, if so please add links in the comments section.

It is easy to take part, just go to your profile page and pick out the numbers for:

- Owned
- Previously Owned
- For Trade
- Want In Trade
- Wishlist
- Rated
Then in your Previously Owned list, see how many of them you also have on your Want or Wishlist.
And the year that you started collecting games (a guideline would be the date your collection went over 10 games, excluding the games that everyone have - chess, checkers, monopoly, trivial pursuit, etc).
If you don't use one (or more) of the above, make an estimate.
And you might need a calculator.

Then put the stats in your entry:

Year your collection started
#Owned
Growth Rate = #Owned/#Years you have been collecting
#Wanted (take the highest number of "Want in Trade" and "Wishlist", removing the '4's and '5's on your wishlist.
Desire% = #Wanted/#Owned x 100
What is your "Most Wanted" game? Make this your geeklist entry game.
#Previously Owned
Churn% = #Previously Owned/#Owned x 100 (Low Churn probably makes you a 'collector', high churn a 'trader')
Regret Factor = Number on your Previously Owned List that are on your Want or Wishlist
Game you Most Regret losing and why you lost it
#Played = Number of games you have played. You can get this from the number you have rated (or if you don't rate all the games you have played you can go to your Played stats page (there is 100 on each page)
#Played of Owned: go to your Owned page then apply the filter for "played" (or rated if you don't record plays)
Played%: #Played of Owned / Owned x 100 (% of your collection you have played) (high Played% would make you a 'gamer', low would be a 'buyer')
Game you most want to play of those you have not.
Future Growth% = (#Wanted-#For Trade)/#Owned x100*

Then add any comments on how the metrics look for you and why.
Finally, you might want to comment on how these metrics should be changed, what they mean and what other metrics there could be.

* Updated to make more sense

There is a geeklist following up on this list here:
Collection Metrics - Growth, Churn, Regret & Desire - Analysis

Year your collection started: 2004
#Owned: 325
Growth Rate = 325/6 = 54 (games per year)
#Wanted: 63
Desire% = 63/325 x 100 = 19%
Most Wanted: D-Day at Omaha Beach, or maybe Zombie State - Diplomacy of the Dead
#Previously Owned: 71
Churn% = 71/325 x 100 = 22%
Regret Factor = 2
Game you Most Regret losing and why you lost it: I don't really regret either of them really, but probably Tikal. I just got offered such a good trade for it that I couldn't say no.
#Played: 272
#Played of Owned: 160
Played%: 160/325 x 100 = 49%
Most Want to Play: Quite a few. Blood Feud in New York, Chaos in the Old World, Downfall of Pompeii, Thunderstone, Dungeon Lords.
Future Growth% = (63-48)/325 = 5%

I'm hoping my collection won't grow much. There are only a few games I *really* want and I have quite a few games up for sale. I've done an awful lot of trading over the last 2 years which has pushed up my Churn rating.
My played% is pretty low considering I've been making an effort to try to play them. Partly this is due to the heavy trading I've been doing, trading away games I've played and aren't right for me and acquiring new games I haven't played.
There are a lot of my games that are still in shrink, but loads that I would like to play. The difficult bit is that my current game group is quite inexperienced, so don't want to be bombarded by new game after new game. And I'll have to learn the game from scratch before I teach it to them. I don't often have the energy to do that.

Desire% = 0.38%
Most Wanted: Dominion: Prosperity
#Previously Owned: 3
Churn% = 1.15%
Regret Factor = 0
Game you Most Regret losing and why you lost it: None.
#Played: 208 (since march 2008 when I started logging plays)
#Played of Owned: 113 since march 2008, 99 more played at some point before that.
Played%: 43.5% since march 2008, 81.5% played all time.
Most Want to Play: Lots of them... Revolution: The Dutch Revolt 1568-1648 is the one we've had the longest...
Future Growth Factor = .33

Biggest eye-opener is probably that there are a lot of games that we used to play (some of them quite frequently), that haven't come to the table in the last 2.5 years (which is a pretty long time). Only a fifth of our collection is unplayed, 20 full games and 28 expansions, which is pretty good...

Year your collection started: 2003 (although I own more than a 10 game before that year, that's still the year that I consider the starting point for my real collection)
#Owned: 132
Growth Rate = 18,9
#Wanted: 40
Desire% = 30%
Most Wanted: War of the Ring and Dune are my most wanted games.
#Previously Owned: 13
Churn% = 9,8%
Regret Factor = 0
#Played: 293
#Played of Owned: 75
Played%: 56,8%
Most Want to Play: Twilight Imperium 3rd ed., Here I Stand, Imperial, Wings of War, Rush n'Crush
Future Growth Factor = 3

My collection has been quite stable for a few years. There hasn't been many games published in these years that I would really like to own. Although now I've started to drool over couple of older designs that I would really like to test. But as many of them are oop and hard to get my collection will probably stay stable still. My wishlisht is much larger than my #wanted, but that's because it takes quite a big pool of drool for a game to rise from 4 to 3+ on my wishlist

Year your collection started: 1980ish (some children's games) / 2003 (Carcassonne/Catan and stuff) 2007 (the start of the 'real' collection - I'm going to count this one, also the 'collection' will be reduced to these games in the following)
#Owned 140 (or approx. 110, since the end of 2007)
Growth Rate = approx. 37
#Wanted 50
Desire% = approx. 40%
What is your "Most Wanted" game? Goa, but now I'll wait for the new version.
#Previously Owned Churn% = 5%
Regret Factor = 0
Game you Most Regret losing and why you lost it - No game
#Played 316
#Played of Owned: 113 (it's actually 121 if I count old plays from before 2000)
Played%: 81% (86%)
Game you most want to play of those. ?Of the games played? Or the unplayed ones? Of the played onws it's Samurai and Samurai again. Update: of the unplayed owned games it's Elfengold but you need more players for that and also players who already know Elfenland so it takes time until I can play it...
Future Growth Factor = 1.43

I think these numbers are not bad. I try to play my collection as much as it's possible and also try to buy only those games that I really hope can get lots of plays. So I test the games in the club and only buy those that I think my wife is also going to like.

Other metrics: how many times did you play a game of yours on average? What % of your games have you played at least 50, 25, 10 times, what % have you never played? What percentage of your collection have you played in the past 365 days?

Desire% = #Wanted/#Owned x 100 = 43%
Most Wanted: 18AL, Baltimore and Ohio, Brass
#Previously Owned: 95
Churn% = 44%

Game you Most Regret losing and why you lost it: Wahammer Quest, I liked it but it was worth more to me for the sale value than the game was.

Most Want to Play: Roads and Boats (it was Indonesia, but got my first play of that yesterday)

I assume my collection will continue shifting with a tendency for slow growth. I try to trade as much as I can, so things don't remain in my collection for long if I don't enjoy them.

Year your collection startedI'm going to put down 2002 because I think it's more relevant to this list and BGG. (the year I went over 10 games could also be viewed as 1982)

#Owned 1135

Growth Rate 141.875

#Wanted 43 (Although I'm not sure why taking 4's out helps. It's already made it onto the wishlist which means it's a short hope to the owned list. Also, what about 'Want to Buy'. If I know it's OOP it will often times get taken off my wishlist and put onto the 'want to buy' list.) So, it's 167 if you include all the games that has gotten onto my radar for me to buy (or given to as gifts).

What is your "Most Wanted" game? I currently don't have any 'Must Haves' on my wishlist. Without going through my wish to buy list and ordering them all, I'd have to saw if I came across a reasonably priced copy of Warhammer Quest I'd be very excited.

#Previously Owned 67 (some from memory, could be higher)

Churn% = 5.9% (seems awful high to me)

Regret Factor = 0

Game you Most Regret losing and why you lost it Magic Realm. I was moving, I wasn't really a boardgamer at the time and all my friends were miniature gamers too, so could never get anyone interested in playing. So into the Goodwill bin it went.

#Played = 803, but there are some that won't show up on that stat because I played them pre-logging.

#Played of Owned: 771, but again could be missing some from 'pre-logging'

Played%: 69% (could be skewed by 'pre-logging games' and expansions that don't get logged as played.

Game you most want to play of those you have not. I have a list of 30 to make sure I get played this year (but I can't find it right now)

Future Growth Factor = 2.5

Desire% = 19.7%
Most Wanted: Onirim
#Previously Owned: 126
Churn% = 103.28%
Regret Factor = 0 or 7 [*]
Most Regret Losing: N/A or Zitternix (gift for nephew)
#Played: 438 [**]
#Played of Owned: 80
Played%: 77.7%
Most Want to Play: Sherlock Holmes Consulting Detective: The Thames Murders & Other Cases
Future Growth Factor = 0.19

My percentages for owned and previously owned are affected by my recent move across Canada for which I sold off about half of my collection. My regret factor remains low since I only sold off games I rated lower than 8 or games I had not yet played and did not expect to play any time soon. Most of these games were bought in the first two years of my obsession as I went on a deep dive into the hobby to discover the different types of games and mechanisms that existed and tried to discover which of these I truly enjoyed. The Great Sell-off affected my churn percentage which would have been closer to zero: without the need to cull my collection, I'm not sure I would have done so (despite the lack of regret). Now that I have culled my collection once, I'm more inclined to continue doing so - keeping only those games that I enjoy playing.

The growth rate metric shows the current state of my collection but doesn't reflect the actual rate of game purchasing. Churn% helps with this but I think a Buy Rate [(Owned+Prev. Owned)/Years Collecting] metric would be informative: mine is 248/5 = 49.6. You could think of this as Gross Churn % and your metric as Net Churn % (or not...).

Another metric I'd be interested in is Played Rate = # of new to you games played / years of recording plays. Mine would be something like 90 per year.

My want-based stats are skewed by my wish-listing of kids games I'm considering getting for my girlfriend's daughters. I don't really "want" most of these. So, my Desire% is actually lower (closer to 15%). My Future Growth Factor calculation would have caused a Divide-By-Zero error (my Prev. Owned would have been 0) if it hadn't been for The Great Sell-Off.

[*] I record games purchased as gifts for my nephew as previously owned.
[**] #Played is closer to 470, but I haven't rated or recorded plays for all of the games I've played (especially Unpublished Prototypes).

What is your "Most Wanted" game? Perry Rhodan, which should be out in English any day now.
#Previously Owned: 4
Churn%: 6.9%... somehow I don't think "collector is the right label.
Regret Factor:= 0

#Played: 262

Played%: 57/58: 98.3%
Game you most want to play of those you have not:: Maharaja: The Game of Palace Building in India (by default)
Future Growth Factor: 1/4, or 0.25

For the last two years, I have rarely bought anything without playing it first. My collection is made up of high-quality titles that I enjoy. It's versatile and of a reasonable size. I'm in no hurry to expand it just for the sake of expansion. Generally I'm in no hurry to acquire games, as my growth rate of 15 is largely offset by birthday and Christmas gifts. I don't get rid of games unless I don't enjoy them... so it's hard for me to imagine a situation where my "regret factor" is greater than 0. Actually, my personal regret factor is that I have 11 games for trade. I might eventually try to unload some of this stuff in a math trade, but shipping costs and a low want-list keep me from expending the effort.

Overall I'm pleased with these stats with the sole exception of my trade list.

I have only recently begun trading in the last couple of months. I think that once I start to get used to the shock of losing games from my collection, I will probably put more up for trade. I'm sure that my collection will have more turn over, but I am equally certain that my collection will continue to grow, perhaps not at the feverish pace of the last few years, but it will continue to grow.

Year your collection started (in earnest) I'll choose 1980
#Owned About 1000 (system says 1019, which includes many I don't own anymore and many others I haven't logged)
Growth Rate = #Owned/#Years 33.3
#Wanted It says 21 (but I mostly use this tool to find people who own games on my Wishlist and then don't clean it up)
Desire% 2.1%
"Most Wanted" game? Flowerpower, because my wife wants to try it #Previously Owned 133, but I've only been tracking this a short while. Probably, realistically, 400.
Churn% Per official numbers, 13.3%
Regret Factor 0
Game you Most Regret losing and why you lost it Maybe Samurai, because I never got around to playing it. But I'm not losing any sleep over it.
#Played 479 (since logging commenced only 7 years ago)
#Played of Owned 354
Played% 35.4%
Unplayed game you most want to play Too many to consider. Any of 50 or more Murder Mystery games, Bloom, about 100 party games, the list is HUGE.
Future Growth Factor = (#Wanted-#For Trade)/#Previously Owned (21-43)/133 = -0.17

I truly wish to reduce my game collection to about 150 "proper" games that we play from time to time and have very high replay value (think Acquire). But I also want to have about 100 party games which come out about once every three-to-five years (think Anybody's Guess or Portrayal). And on top of that, I want to keep a ton of murder/mystery party games for when we get to have adult gettogethers again. That would probably mean something like 500 games, if you also count kid games that are needed until the children get a bit older.

I think the numbers show me slowing down quite a bit, considering that I've been hovering around 1000 for well over a decade.

Interesting, but kind of misleading. My wishlist (124 games) is used to keep track of things that look interesting and warrant further investigation. I suppose if I used "Want to Buy" that would be more what we're looking for here. Likewise, quite a bit of my collection is made of expansions (Blue Moon decks, Agricola decks, etc) and I don't log plays under expansions, so it looks like I have a lot more unplayed than I actually do.

Still, I like stats and enjoy this geeklist.

The Played of Owned stat is skewed, as I have a number of games I've played a lot of over the years before I started logging my plays. The future growth factor is also out of whack, as I expect to buy ~15-20 games and expansions per year.

General comments on what the metrics mean (or don't mean) for you.

It's good to see that my numbers reflect what I hope do, which is actually put my collection to use. 88% use rate? I'm certainly cool with that! I don't believe in having a game sit on a shelf if it's not going to get semi-regular play. Having said that, between casual gamer friends, family, hardcore gamer friends, etc. I have enough audiences that it warrants a fairly diverse collection.

I see myself maintaining this size of a collection, but certainly not dramatically increasing it. Household real estate is too much of a premium! The fact that I've been able to successfully trade solid games that just did not quite "make the cut" (i.e. Stone Age, Colosseum, Setlers of Catan, etc.) helps me feel comfortable that trading can be a component of acquiring the few titles that perk my interest.

Year : 2007 is when the number of Euros that I owned climbed over 10. Before that I had about 100 trivia, word, children's and party games, but only a handful of BGG style games. My collecting tendencies were more geared towards music and Playmobil until then.

#Owned: 607
Growth Rate: 173 games per year (over 3.5 years)
#Wanted: ~ 75
Desire%: 12.5%
Most Wanted: Fugger, Welser, Medici is a grail. A more reasonable (but somewhat hard to get) want is Kaivai Expansion. My most wanted game in print is Witch's Brew.
#Previously Owned: 48
Churn%: 8%, but this is skewed low (see comment below).
Regret Factor: 5 games (about 10% of previously owned).
Beggest Regret: Not sure I have one. I don't have "the one that got away", since my "Regret" games were ones I traded up for.
#Played: 525
#Played of Owned: 342 (I own 65% of the games I've played since 2007)
Played%: 56% (I've played 56% of the games I own)
Most Want to Play: After the Flood, Gonzaga, Morisi, Railroad Dice
Future Growth Factor = (75-29)/48 = 0.96

My played percent is still woefully low. I'm hoping to slow down drastically on the acquisition of games, but there are still quite a few that I want to pick up. I don't imagine getting another 85 before Christmas, though (maybe a dozen, but nothing like my current rate).

I'd like to cull quite a few from the collection, but want to at least give most of them a try before I give up on them. With so many great games, it seems silly to hold on to mediocre ones.

I added one stat: Percent of played games that you own. There are a few gamers in our extended game group that pride themselves on maintaining a small collection while playing a wide variety of games, so I thought it might be interesting to look at.

Game you Most Regret losing and why you lost it - My original copy of Survive! which I gave away at 20 years ago. Sentimental reasons, really, and I have replaced the copy with a similar one.

Game you most want to play of those you have not. Die Macher

I guess the biggest surprise for me was the growth rate over the 11 years of collecting. In monetary terms, lets assume $20 per game on average for a total of $840 per year spent on games - $70 per month. Lets compare that to my smoking habit - half a pack a day at $8.30 per pack is $760 per year or $63/month. If I quit smoking that would mean I could purchase 6.5 games per month. My wanted list would be whittled down in 27.5 months (assuming that I didn't add anything which is completely unrealistic). Still as good a argument as any to quit smoking, but dammit I just like looking cool. cool

Most Want to Play: Any of my unplayed Steam/Age of Steam expansions. I bought too many of them. But I still really enjoy any that I do get to play.
Future Growth Factor = 0.0955

My churn% obviously means I am pretty ruthless at getting rid of poor games. I also don't want good games. I only want excellent games. Why bother spending time playing good games when you can play excellent ones? Of course I'm also addicted to trying to new games to see how they work and that often means buying them myself. So many of my sold games are of the once-and-done variety.

Most of my unplayed games are expansions. I only have 7 unplayed games if you exclude expansions.

Looks like I have my collectors bug under control. My collection has been more or less stable the last year. There is still a fair number of games I acquire but there also seem to be more and more games leaving my collection. Generally games that do not get played anymore or games that have become obsolete as newer and improved versions have been published. The negative growth factor seems to indicate my collection will get smaller. I don't see that happening yet. But who knows. Also happy with the play percentage as I'm really concentrating on getting those unplayed games on the table or out of the door. Last year I was at 21% unplayed. That has now improved to 17%.

That churn rate is a tad higher than expected, but it's mostly the result of one huge clear out (at the time I got rid of Doge). I find that I am buying fewer games now than I did 5 years or so ago. I'm probably a bit more picky, and I have less space, but our group also co-ordinates our game buying more than we used to, so that we (usually!) only pick up one copy of each new game. Looking back, most of my recent purchases have been children's games!

Saying that, I going to Essen this year so the growth rate may be significantly higher (he says hopefully) ...

By ~1975 I had over 10 hobby games (AH, 3M and the like) in my collect, a few of which I still have. However probably about half my collect has been acquired in the last 5 years which gives a recent growth rate of about 40.

I do not usually rate or record as played, expansions. I therefore adjusted my Played of Owned (and Played) for expansions I own and played. I suppose I could have subtract expansions from my number owned instead.
