This was it for me! I had no real Idea about it, I bought it new back in '86 so no internet, and no Geek.

There I was face to face with the entire Game-master line up in my local Toys'R'Us with an entire months worth of paycheck and then some (to cover the cost of course!) in my pocket. That day was the culmination of months of perusing that very aisle reading the back of the box and just imagining what lay inside...waiting for me and my cousin. He ended up with Shogun in his hand I with this after we eliminated all the others, we switched back and forth a few times, pouring over the images and text on the back of those wonderful Coffin boxes for the umpteenth time, then I pulled the trigger on this one (The little Helicopters finally got me!) and I have never regretted it once! Our first play covered the entire weekend from rules reading to punching all the little plastic guys, to setting up and getting the game going, and it includes my ONLY memory of my father AND my Uncle playing a board game with us both! (as we ran over into the time for them to pick him up..)

He later held on to it as I went off to college to protect its miniature goodness from my then baby brother. after nearly 16 years to the day I got it back in my own possession, no worse for the wear (he is a fantastic Comic book collector!) and thus it came home to a crowded shelf that IT was the start of all those long years ago!

Edit: For spelling and formatting.

No, really. I had read about games like this in the pages of "Boys' Life" magazine. And there I was, on a slow Saturday in Coeur d'Alene, my freshman year at North Idaho College. I dropped by a hobby shop that had a little game section, and came away with this.

I never got past the basic scenario, though I did play it quite a few times. Some "gateway" game, no?

From the way back machine, I believe this was the first game I purchased with my own money. Probably back in 1977, when it first came out. A local photography store carried a few games. My older brother went there to get his SPI games and I usually tagged along. When I saw I could buy a cool game for $1.95, I was excited and made my first game purchase with my own hard earned money.

Like Bruce's post above, I found out about wargames from Boy's Life magazine in an ad for Strategy and Tactics. IIRC it was an ad for Winter War. I took my hard earned money and plopped down a few bucks for a 6 issue subscription.

I was sooooo excited when the first issue arrived and the cover appeared to announce the game was The Ardennes Offensive. My elation turned to disappointment when th enclosed game turned out to be Scrimmage. cry

However, some 200 issues later I am still subscribing....

The absolutely first board game I ever bought was a chess set. It wasn't this version, but this was the second.

A friend of mine got one for Christmas and we had such a blast playing it that I went down to the neighborhood Daily Unclaimed Freight outlet and bought one for $6.25.

I was introduced to this in 3rd grade by a teacher, and I decided that I needed to own my own copy.
