As is the tradition, I will start things off with my recap:

This weekend we had a suprise birthday party for my mother in law. Some games were played. Not nearly as many as I would have liked, but it was gaming none the less. I did get an excellent game of Stone Age in on Saturday, and an excellent first game of Space Alert in with a bunch of new players Friday night.

I played Tsuro and a couple of games of TP.

Tsuro was a really fun game, difficult to be sure, but fun!

This past weekend was my annual trip to the 1000 Islands, so there was a lot of gaming going on. Since my weekend officially started on Thursday, I'm starting there.

Thursday:
* Puerto Rico
* Roll Through the Ages
* Tichu (3 matches)
* Citadels
* Modern Art
* Power Grid

Friday:
* Through the Ages
* Samurai
* Yspahan
* Tichu
* Caylus
* Sticheln

Saturday:
* Thurn & Taxis
* Quicksand
* Zombies
* Dominion ( + Intrigue and Seaside )
* San Juan
* Pickomino
* Agricola
* Trias
* For Sale

Sunday:
* Category 5
* Agricola

It was great to try a four hour game like Through the Ages, and even better that I really enjoyed it. Despite its length, time never seemed to drag...unlike when we played Zombies. yuk

Best of all, I played a lot of games with a friend I only see maybe twice a year. Always a good time.

Due to moving, I had little time to get my d&d adventure ready. I did sleeve 800+ Dominion cards as I waited for the Verizon Fios guys to do their thing.

On Sunday, I got together with my regular gaming buddy and played 5 games of Mem'44. This was the first time in 2 dozen games I got to play as the allies.

It was an interesting experience. I knew the Axis side so well, and I had thoughts about common mistakes made by the Allies. Only half or so of my theories panned out.

The scenarios played:
1 - Pegasus Bridge
This was an easy win for the Allies. I had some bad rolls, but I got a string of good cards.

2 - Sainte Mere Eglise
The drop was incredibly kind, and I captured the middle section in the first round. After that, we traded fire.. but the Allies took the victory in the end.

3 - Sword Beach
The first of my main theories was tested-- that the tanks are a trap. It is best to ignore them. I mostly did, and was able to secure a solid win.

4 - Pointe-Du-Hoc
While I had solid cards and good rolls, an early air power card from my opponent left my center flank too weak for me to win. It was tense.. since my opponent kept moving his artillery closer and closer to the middle of the board.

5 - Omaha Beach
Was I tired or just stupid? After validating my theory in Sword Beach, I abandoned it for Omaha Beach. I had a bunch of strong armor cards in my opening hand, and I used them. It was an ugly match.. and the Axis stomped my Allies into the sand.

This weekend we went to lake Balaton where our friends stay for two weeks and I took some small and portable games with me. They also had some games (Dominion, 6 Nimmt/Category 5) there.

On Friday we played Keltis: Das Kartenspiel which I won (it's the strange card game I usually win against this friend who is just too good in card games).
Then we played 6 Nimmt/Category 5 which I also won!

On Saturday we played Merchants which was newly introduced to my friends and my wife. I came 3rd in the first game, then I was last (tied) in the second game and everyone had at least 20 points more than I had in the third game. It seems they learned the basic strategies/tactics while I just could not find out how I played the game a year before.

Then while the girls relaxed a bit, we played Auf der Reeperbahn Nachts um halb Zwei (a.k.a. Times Square) four times. This friend of mine who has grown up playing traditional card games won the game four times. (And it's a game that had the first impression that it's completely based on luck!).

In the evening we played Dominion. It's always fun to play Dominion with them: as I have co-translated the rules for the Hungarian edition, I translated the player name in the example to the name of this guy. They didn't know it when they bought the game but they instantly knew it was intentional Well, his wife was very lucky during the game, kept buying provinces while whenever she used the Thief she got at least two golden coins so we could see that she's going to win - and it came by surprise that I had only 2 points less than she did (I collected the 3- and 1-VP cards).
Then my wife went to sleep and we played 11 nimmt! which is really a good and different follow-up to 6 nimmt!/Category 5; only it's not good with many players. With 3 it was fine; my friend and I had 25 points (tied) and his wife had 32 in the end when we went to sleep after 8 rounds.

On Sunday we played Auf der Reeperbahn... again on the balcony. I won 1 of the 3 games we played and that was only because he didn't remember all the rule details.
Finally, in the afternoon, we played Samurai - The Card Game; he almost won but I did (he had 1 majority and 1 tie and so did I).

On Friday, one game of Thunderstone, which I'm really getting into.

Had some friends over on Saturday, and played Forbidden Island and Homesteaders for the first time, then lost in a good game of Ghost Stories.

Forbidden Island is exactly what I expected and very well done.

Homesteaders was ok, might be really good on more plays, but at first it seems very accountant-y.

The day started off with Founding Fathers, which I rather enjoyed. I went heavily into debates, which in retrospect was a mistake. I was a bit confused about the scoring. I didn't do nearly enough voting (and was screwed on a couple I did make) and ended up coming in a distant 4th. I don't mind, it was a game to learn the system.

Then we moved on to Circus Train, a game of which I've heard really good things, and it didn't disappoint. We played the Basic Game rules, and except for 1 rule I screwed up on calculating performance scores, I think we actually played everything correctly. We were a bit hampered by having not enough bankrupt circus talent out, which was basically luck of the draw, and the game was pretty tight throughout. I think I probably came in last in this one, too, which was okay. It was an overall very tight game, and I was playing it to get a feel for the system anyway. Everyone seems eager to get this on the table again, and I've put it on my "must buy" list.

Mark had to leave, so the remaining 3 of us (Andy, Shannon and I) wrapped up with a quick game of Killer Bunnies and the Quest for the Magic Carrot: Remix, my first exposure to Killer Bunnies. It was kind of fun, although I think its more of a party game. At the end of the game, Shannon had 5 carrot, Andy had 3 and I had 2...and yet I ended up winning. A strange victory mechanism, sure to bother super-competitive players.

Founding Fathers came in last week, so got a chance to play it 4 times over the weekend. First on Friday night, with some friends from church. We played two games, both which I lost. Then on Sunday I got to play two more games, losing one, but finally winning the last one. I'm liking the game quite a bit. Also on Sunday I got a chance to try After the Flood. It was just okay for me.

Wednesday
A Game of Thrones (First Edition)
I played a 5p game with 2 new players. I'm not very good at or comfortable with diplomatic games, and this is no exception. One of the players overlooked my naval support and I wiped out his invasion forces; he was bent on revenge, and my neighbour kept raiding my support as I was the frontrunner. Repeated "clash of kings" events kept undoing our bids for the titles (which all of us found irritating), but I made it across the line by the time we called the game, with 3 cities. The mechanics are relatively clean and clever, but prone to inducing paralysing amounts of analysis. I'm not a fan of games where it's best to be in second or third place.

Thursday
Homesteaders
We conducted a 3p game of this great little piece; I experimented with the Farm, and high-population strategies, building the Ranch, and then the Rodeo and then hiring as many people as I could. I went for cow buildings as well as those that scored for people. In the end I won at 52/4 to 52/2, 30 - a victory by 2 silver dollars!

Acquire
The three of us moved into a game of Acquire, which I have mixed feelings about. The positional placing is pretty random and I don't see it as particular evocative of corporate activity; however it works very well as something to hang share purchase and takeovers on. I achieved several majorities, then made a big mistake - I forgot that shares were limited, and my plan to convert millions of cheap shares to those of the endgame company was foiled. However due to my continuous cashflow I kept on taking first place and the endgame company didn't score that highly. I won $60,700 to $45,100, $29,300. The third player was shut out of the first two mergers and despite reportedly being very good at the game, had a miserable session. This is my other beef with the game - once you are down, you're in trouble and don't have much to do until the end of the game.

Saturday
Homesteaders
I played a 2p game and beat my opponent 63 to 34. He was extremely cautious and stayed out of debt completely while continuing to construct a resources engine past the time to go for points. I tried a Copper-producing strategy.

Race for the Galaxy: The Brink of War
I played several 2p games of Race for the Galaxy: The Brink of War, generally losing more than I won.

Sunday
Money!
I heard about Money! being available on the iPad/iPhone/iSomething - none of which I have, but the news piqued my interest. We played three 4p rounds and I came 4th, 1st and 2nd. It's a pretty decent fast game.

RoboRally
While waiting, we got into an 8p game of RoboRally, which started off fun but then started to drag as the chaos turned from hilarious fun into an unreachable game end trigger and players started to debate the merits of different variants instead of playing the game. As enough people had turned up by the time I lost my first life, I left the game.

Funny Friends
I jumped into a 5p game of this wacky little gem; while there were two new players, everyone used their phones effectively and bid other people up. However, the amount of thought going into the game slowed things down considerably and it wasn't the light experience I had before.

Shadow Hunters
I then played 3 rounds of 7p Shadow Hunters with the Shadow Hunters Expansion. In the first I was Unknown, my Werewolf partner revealed early on and was pummelled by a coalition including Daniel and then I was killed. In the second, I was Ultra Soul with Unknown as my ally and came close to victory before David used his special power and won. In the third game I was Unknown again and decided to power up. I had the cursed sword and a couple more weapons before everyone decided to wipe me out. Before they could, Bob won.

Race for the Galaxy: The Brink of War
I finished with four 3p games of Race for the Galaxy: The Brink of War. In the first I mounted a strong assault on the prestige leader (who had no 6-costs) but was a few points behind (with my sole 6-cost Merchant Guild). In the second game I ran a few rounds of Trade-Produce as Ancient Race against grey military worlds, then dropped UPI and then GoldenAge and ACorn. I placed 2 more 6-costs by the time the game ended for a total of 5 to my opponents' 2-or-so. The third game featured an opponent starting with Galactic Developers, putting down Investment Credits and then Galactic Federation. This is usually a killer combo, but my Rebel Freedom Fighters dropped Rebel Developments on the develop calls and outpaced my opponent with Rebel worlds on settle calls and I scooped up prestige lead. I finished off with Imperium Seat and was way ahead. The final game was a massacre to a player who put out GBankers, GFed, PGA, Terraforming Guild and Golden Age. Us other two fell far behind and had nowhere near enough cardflow to fight back.

On Sunday Lindy and I played Ingenious.

We followed with Traders of Carthage. This is an amazing game! It seems the more you play the more you see to watch for and the more strategic your actions are. We find our games are getting longer because of it but so far this has not been a deterrent. Excellent game! The toss up was do I post under this game or the one I did? It wasn't easy.

Then we played Bohnanza with 2 more of my daughters and let our little twin nieces help place cards.

Now here is the most interesting game of the weekend: Chess! Who would have thought it? I hadn't played in something like 30 years. Lindy wanted me to teach her. It was awesome! I couldn't believe the tension. For a while there as I was teaching and playing I got too cocky and moved too fast too many times and it cost me the game. She thought that was just great - beating me on her first game. Needless to say we are planning our next game!

Me and four of my friends had a mini-gathering this weekend, dedicating the Friday evening and the whole Saturday (until about 3 a.m.) to boardgaming. So I got to play some games that I hadn't played for a far too long.

El Grande - we kicked off the gathering with El Grande. We had meant to play it the last time we had a similar session in May, but it slipped through the net of other games and mismatching schedules for some players. But this time we got it on the table right away, and deservedly so. One of the few games I rate as 10 and I hadn't played it for two years! Once again, it was a lot of good fun and tight decisions. Highlights included 11 blue and 7 red caballeros in Basque Country downgraded by the 4-0-0 movable scoreboard and scoring the tower (enhanced by the other movable scoreboard) four times during the last three rounds.

Game of Thrones - next game was Game of Thrones, a request from our host. There was a lot of hussle between Lannister, Pyke and Stark, resulting in Lannister being almost completely wiped out and Pyke dominating most of the western coast. However, the true struggle for the dominance was between Tyrell and Baratheon. Two casual raids by Stark destroyed couple crucial Baratheon support orders without Stark player even realizing it and opened up the way for Tyrell to snatch the victory. The game also included a 12 strenght Wildling attack being beaten back and Tyrell occupying the top position on all three power tracks towards the end of the game.

Twilight Imperium 3rd Edition - We started Saturday with Twilight Imperium, enhanced by some Shattered Sun stuff and open public objectives. It was a very active outing by TI standards, with lots of fighting and planets changing hands. However, once again PDS units made things bog down badly, and brought out some cries of desperation for the game to end. I'd really love to see Deep Space Cannons technology removed from the game.

Runewars - Runewars had been a hit in our previous gathering, so it was a must this time around as well. Three of the players were veterans, one a newbie. It turned out to be the quickest Runewars game I've ever played. Season cards were generous with dragon runes and some shrew movement allowed Daqan Lords to crush the flank of the human armies, fulfilling the secret objective and capturing two runes in the process, all before the end of the third year. Lots of other stuff was going on too - undead and humans were locked in warfare from the very first year, and second summer saw an untimely death of the elven hero.

Roll Through the Ages - To wrap things up, we wanted something lighter. There were calls for Fairy Tale, but I decided I wanted to introduce the people to Roll Through the Ages. And it seemed like an appropriate way to finish what had by accident become a somewhat themed gathering of building empires. The game was a big hit and a second round was played immediatelly afterwards. Saw some very interesting approaches, like a guy who managed to buy Engineering while having his stone track completely maxed out. Never seen a pyramid being built so efficiently!

The first game of the weekend was Ninja Versus Ninja. I got in a play with each of the three kids.

The game is a lot of fun. As you pick and choose where to apply that good, bad, or ugly roll of the dice, it comes down to your decision on how to apply it. My undefeated streak against the two older kids ended when my five year old snuck in a victory a turn before I expected to win!

Friday

Solo variant of Notre Dame. I just got this in a trade and hadn't played it before. I found a decent solo variant here on the geek that is very close to the multiplayer game. I played through the solo variant just to get a feel for the flow of play, so I could teach the game later.

Saturday

I played a game of Jaipur with my wife in the afternoon.

I went to my mother-in-laws for for dinner. My wife's brother was in from Colorado with his family. I taught them Medici and everyone loved it.

My brother-in-law taught me Gin Rummy (he called it knock-rummy, but I looked up the rules online and I'm fairly certain we were playing gin rummy) and we played a 2-player game of that. That was an interesting game. The subtle strategies and depth surprised me, being it's a rummy game.

After dinner we all played Quiddler, which is a family favorite.

hosted a game day.

When I first arrived, there were 5 of us, but we were expecting a 6th. We got in a quick game of Ra. In the middle of Ra, the 6th arrived.

Next we played Medici and then Hoity Toity and then Diamant. After that we broke up into 2 groups of 3. three of us played Notre Dame while the other 3 played Le Havre.

After that the 6th player left and the remaining 5 played a game of Puerto Rico to wrap up the day's gaming.

Our second new game of the weekend was Sator Arepo Tenet Opera Rotas.

This started really slow, and I think it took my daughter (12) the longest to figure out how to best move around. Meanwhile, my youngest son (5) took great pleasure in throwing the gargoyle in front of her and moving walkways out of her way. It didn't help that my eldest son (18) and I were also disrupting her, although not entirely on purpose. I look forward to playing this again.

Although I'd played The Magic Labyrinth with the boys, our first play Sunday morning introduced the game to my daughter.

Amazingly enough, my eldest son did not win this time out. It was fairly evenly paced, with my daughter in the lead. She forgot where a few walls were, and that cost her the victory ~ I wound up getting my first win!

Next, my daughter brought down a folding Kalah set, and the two of us played a quick game of it. I had a nice little strategy for this that pretty much handed me the win. It kind of surprised me, though. I don't think I'd ever put any thought into it in prior plays, just moved the stones along to entertain which ever kid I happened to be playing the game with.

My gaming occurred oddly off-weekend this week, all on Thursday. But I'll throw it out there as my contribution for the week.

Lunch game of Roll Through the Ages: The Bronze Age. We'd all played it at least once, but I had lent it to my friend Rick as his wife had really enjoyed it. So he had learned a thing or two about approaching the game - and also got quite lucky in the dice, dealing out several Pestilences (including one turn-the-knife on his final turn) whilst receiving almost no disasters himself. I had early struggles rolling food and all 3 other players had many disasters. One highlight (for the rest of us at least) was Mike stealing Rick's Great Wall in a single turn, the starvation of his own people being as nothing to the satisfaction of such a coup. Still, with many disasters on everyone else and Rick's efficient play, the winner was not in doubt.

Game night Thursday and I played Settlers of America. I wrote it up as a session report, but suffice it to say it is like playing Catan except disconcertingly different - you are delivering goods for a start. Settlers of the Age of Steam?

We played some lighter games too, including Alea Iacta Est which was pretty fun, though it seemed to take a bit longer than the weight of the game merited - perhaps due to 3 new players?

At this point, a huge storm came through and us all with our precious cardboard boxes. So it seemed a good time to break out No Thanks!. We played it twice but remarkably, both games were won by Geoff, who took 33-35 - along with enough coins that he had a sickening low score. 2nd game I had 23-25 and 27 but couldn't get the 26. But even if I had found it, I would have been down to 13 point - and my friend Geoff won with 10. Mad skillz he has at this game.
