For the third straight year, I will be running Proto Alley, an unofficial event at BGG.CON that allows designers to playtest raw, early-stage designs with other designers.

What will you bring?

UPDATE: We're on the BGG.CON official schedule! W00t!

GRAND GUIGNOL
2-4 players

The Grand Guignol was a legendary theater of horror in early 20th Century Paris. Now, you will take control by hiring actors, writing plays, and making lots of fake blood. Can you create the most shocking performance?

Set in the near future, you and your team embark on Mars with aspirations to explore and colonize. Balance risks and gains while taking expeditions deeper and deeper into unknown territories. Take caution because without the right support and research, your journey could fall short in failure.

Cluny Monks

2-5 Players
90 Minutes

Starting in the 10th Century and extending into the middle of the 13th Century, Cluny was looked upon as the keystone and cultural guide to the stability of European society. It led the way with crafts, agriculture, literature and of course religious studies.

In this worker placement, resource management game, players are vying for respect and recognition from the Abbot of the Abbey. You must manage your monks efficiently to build up your priory and bring excellence to Cluny.

Spaceward Ho! The Board Game

2-4 players
?? minutes (it's that raw!) (targeting 60-90 minutes)

Complete with a lack of any licensing rights whatsoever!

This is (will be) a board-game recreation of the 4X space conquest game of the early 1990's. It follows the standard 4X formula, except with most game concepts abstracted to the extreme, thus streamlining and simplifying game play. There are two resources: money (renewable) and metal (non-renewable). Planets have two traits: temperature (terraformable) and gravity (non-terraformable). Each player will have their own unique "home" gravity and temperature, so planets that are yucky for one player may be paradise for another.

Well, that's the idea, anyway. It's still pretty ethereal at the moment. Hopefully by signing up for Proto Alley it'll light a fire under my kiester and make me get some rules on paper and maybe tested once or twice before November!

Mineral Quest

Mineral Quest is a card game for 2 to 5 Players where Players collect Element Cards and then exchange them for Mineral Cards that are comprised of those Elements. Each Player takes one of 5 different Roles representing occupations that all seek Minerals, but for different reasons. Those Roles are the Geologist, the Gem Dealer, the (museum) Curator, the Industrialist, and the Miner. A few Minerals are sought by only one of the Roles, but most are competed for by several of the Roles. I need playtesters to help me scale this one back, fix the scoring, and make it more fun for the layman.

Sample cards:

Microcline feldspar, for example:

I will have my other oil exploration prototype, Wildcat!, out in the big room at BGG.CON. It isn't as "raw".

Mother Road:

3-5 players
60-90 minutes

It's the 1950's and it seems everyone is riding Route 66 right through the center of your town. Working frantically to erect businesses to fulfill the needs of the tourists, you must also attempt to advertise in a variety of ways to make your business more attractive than the same type of business run by your fellow players. You have to balance hiring workers with advertising as well as expanding your business.

The flow of tourists just gets bigger and bigger and if word gets out that your town can't handle their business, they just might quit stopping altogether.

(this is an unpublished prototype. I probably jumped the gun by adding it to the database, but I wanted a central place were I could track my work on the game)

Destiny: Galaxy Adventures

Players: 1 to 4 (could theoretically handle more with additional components)

Time: A full game takes 90 - 120 minutes, but I'll only playtest for 60 minutes, tops (unless testers insist on playing through).

Theme: You're a fresh young captain with a warp-capable ship. It's time for you to forge your destiny! D:GA's non-linear, deck-driven world structure offers many viable career paths to victory: Trader, courrier, smuggler, pirate, bounty hunter, asteroid miner, salvager, archaeologist, etc.. Assemble a crew, upgrade and customize your ship's systems, and explore the universe! Space pirates, remote outposts, derelict vessels, bustling spaceports, mysterious asteroids... All these and more await you.

Gimmicks:

D:GA is diceless. Instead, D:GA uses spinners. In fact, every card in the D:GA universe deck is a spinner. Not only is every encounter a spinner, but all of your ship systems are spinners too! I think it's safe to say you've never seen a game quite like this.

• The board is (mostly) abstracted as a card deck, so each game is different.

D:GA can be played in semi-simultaneous phases, so there's very little down-time. (This is one of the features I really want to test.)

D:GA encourages competitive and co-operative play, so there may be times where you'll want to make an a temporary "alliance of convenience."

FORGED VICTORY (working title)

2-5 Players
90 - 120 min. (based on # of players)

Summary - A card-driven strategy game where almost every card is unique and does something different, but due to an auction and a market in which to buy cards from, you will have a choice in which cards you obtain. Think: At the Gates of Loyang but with very little luck of the draw and much less luck in general.

Players play as a Blacksmith. The goal is to earn the most Prestige (VP) by creating various items. The cards represent Mines to get your raw metals, Commissions for special items to craft, Assistants that give you special powers, Merchants to buy metals and gems from, Shipments which give you instant materials for smithing, and Tools which allow you to craft the various items.

Once the items are created, you are awarded with money (used to buy other cards, use certain cards, and to win the turn order auction) and/or Prestige (VP).

It's a medium to heavy strategy game with a lot of varience and variety due to the shear number of unique cards (only the Tools have some duplicates).

WEREWOLF - The Board Game

3 - 8 Players
60 - 90 minutes (based on # of players)

Summary: This is a strategy/deduction game based off of the large group deduction game. Someone is a traitor and you need to figure out who they are before they devour the whole village.

Similar to BSG but in less than half the playing time.

WAGON TRADER
3-4 PLAYERS
90-120 MINUTES

Wagon Trader is a meaty, meeple-placement, economic engine, pick up and deliver game, intended for folks who like Puerto Rico, Caylus, and/or Le Havre. We've been through about 25 playtests, and at this point it runs pretty smooth.

The game is set in old west Kansas, and inspired, perhaps loosely, by Lonesome Dove. It lasts 10-12 turns.

Players spend meeples and money to acquire infrastructure of horses (to make longer deliveries), wagons (to deliver more goods), farms (to feed horses), guns (to protect your deliveries from bandits) and employees (to do various cool stuff).

Players acquire dry goods, sugar, cattle and luxuries to deliver to territories near (Nebraska) and far (Montana, Oregon), paying nasty bandits along the way.

Making deliveries gives you victory points as well as favors on five different favors tracks. The different favors tracks offer victory points, more infrastructure, and a variety of special abilities to your wagons, farms and horses.

Backstabbing Merchants
2-5 players
60 minutes

It is a worker/card placement game that I have been working on for a while.

I will also be running the following games in the main room during the convention:
Field Hospital, Mystic Cauldron and Wanna Hang Out.

I hope to have all ready for purchase on The Game Crafter by then. I have the games loaded and have ordered/received copies for demos. I just need to complete all the marketing photos.

2-Player card/board game with a lot of hand management.
Players are the Prosecution and Defense in a fantasy courtroom, trying various types of crimes.

Back when I posted this to the database, I was a stay at home dad, who was spending The Dude's nap times working/thinking on the game's rules and ideas. After 13 years of intermittently working at it, I'd made a breakthrough which flipped it from an amusing diversion to something resembling a real game.

With that momentum and some money saved up, I thought I could get it self-published by 2009. Then the market tanked, I had to go back to work, and life got very responsibility-focused.

Trying to keep the dream alive, though, and putting together a new prototype to play at BGG.CON.

You know what they say, "The fifteenth year is the charm."
